Bernina 1010 sewing machine

by Dorothy
(Australia)

The Bernina 1010 is the best machine in the Bernina range for a basic sewer. It has very few bells and whistles however it is also a reliable workhorse for a busy seamstress.

There are many stitches for decorative sewing which are manually dialed up using a slide bar. The machine has a 'drop feed dogs ' option for freewheel embroidery. This is a machine that is almost unbreakable, with its strong metal frame and metal extension tray. It also has a large comfortable foot pedal.

The stitch length and zigzag stitches are also selected with a dial...there is very little that can go wrong with this machine. Metal bobbins are loaded into the bobbin case and placed in the front of the machine.

Providing the machine race is well cleaned and a drop of oil added regularly the machine will purr.
The lower tension is adjusted by a small screw in the bobbin case. The lighting is directly above the needle and can be easily replaced using the globe remover supplied.

There are several presser feet supplied with the machine and many more available to make every sewing technique a breeze.

I recently gave my Bernina 1010 to my daughter who now sews for her two infants and she, too, is finding it uncomplicated and fun to use.

Yes I said the 1005! My little old Bernie has been through thick and thin with me. I love it!!

I am now ready to move on to the Bernina 230. I am excited for the computer tech. I do LOVE my OLDIE and will keep her. A definite work horse!

I have had a Bernina for about 45 years. The first one in a red case (the type used in schools for many years for sewing classes) was excellent. I replaced it with a 1230 and I have not found it to be as good. I have spent far more on it than the older one. Maybe I was unlucky.

screwed NEW
by: Charleen

I sewen on Berninas for 40+ years. I decided to break the cycle and try something new. I was screwed twice by Janome. I now have a Viking which is not good for anything but embroidery. I needed an industrial, plain heavy duty machine for working on insulated coveralls etc.. I decided to try a Tuff Sew. Now let me tell you --they do false advertising--I got a screwing. ( my friend ordered one also). The machine is heavy all right but my old bernina I bought in 1970 will out do the Tuff sew, has an open arm and is much quieter. Guess what, they have a no return policy in print somewhere on the web site! Oh well, we got a good screw that teaches one the finer side of life!
