Bernina 1030 sewing machine

by Ken Ward
(Ashland OR USA)

I bought my Bernina 1030 sewing machine new around 1987. It was used in my business for about 15 years designing and repairing mountaineering and rescue equipment. It has been abused by thousands of repairs with layers of heavy, coated, laminated, glued, dirty, gritty, sandy stuff. I often run heavy bonded nylon thread (even 69 with a bobin and hook set up for it and thread lube).

I have an nice industrial, but it's cumbersome and a flat bed, so there are many things it just isn't well suited to.

It has required surprisingly little maintenance and only recently did it need its first more serious refurb (a hook, needle bar and bushing, tension disks, etc. for about $370).

I have trashed a number of other good machines during this time, but the Bernina has proven to be the best combination of clean consistent fuss free stitching and durability regardless of cost.

I used to feel sorry for the poor little Bernina, 'till I realized it loves to sew... abuse and all. I'll pass this on to my daughter some day.

Bernina of Yesterday
by: Cathy L/AZ

Hi! You have been very lucky with your Bernina. You have one of the few that was well built and with very little maintinance. Today's machines are not built with the same quality or backing by the Bernina company. It's like pulling teeth to get a Bernina Dealer to live up to the by gone years of the truly wonderful Bernina name.
I wish I had kept my 1030. Live and learn I always say.

I have "My Bernina Guide" Model 1030/1020
by: luraew

I have a Bernina 1030 that I bought in the 80's and it just now needs repair after a cross country move from California to Indiana. I have the manual in perfect condition as it was always stored with my machine. I will NOT sell the manual, but will copy if you are still interested. Let me know and I will find out the cost and give you a quote as it is 71 pages to be copied. Any one know a good Bernina repair shop in either southern Indiana or Louisville, KY?

Manual on line
by: luraew

I just found through a web search that you can purchase the manual on line at www.sewingmachinemanual.net cheaper than I can have it copied for you.

Bernina 1030
by: Anonymous

I have had my Bernina 1030 since the 80's and it still runs beautifully. I am an avid quilter and also make lifejackets for high performance boats which are made with a vinyl type fabric. This machine has been an excellent machine, no breakdowns in all the time I have had it.
I am thinking of upgrading to the QE 440 but am reluctant to give up my 1030. A trusty friend.
