Bernina 1090S

by Mary Ellen Montross
(Tomkins Cove, NY)

I received the Bernina 1090S sewing machine from a friend's wife who passed away rather young (47 years old) and neither of their 2 daughters wanted it.

So our friend asked my husband if I'd be interested and of cource I said yes. I was using my Mom's old Singer and a newer model my Husband had surprized me with one Christmas. Even my husband notices the differences in the machine, he like the fact that the Bernina is much quieter.

I just love the way it handles, it's so smooth and a work horse. I did have a hard time finding a walking foot to fit, but thanks to ebay, I found several.

So I adore my Bernina and if I can ever afford a newer model, I'd still keep this one too, it's just great...

Love my Bernina 1090
by: Darlene

I absolutely love my Bernina 1090. It has given me much sewing pleasure. I have sewn many quilts and some garments.

This machine will stay with me all of my life. It will never be traded on another one even if I get another one!! It has gone with me to quilt classes.

Bernina 1090
by: Betty

I purchased the Bernina 1090 sewing machine in the early 90's, use it several times each week making quilts, fashion clothing, sewing repairs and sewing for the home. I have used this machine to piece and quilt approximately 100 quilts over the years.

I do all routine maintenance myself making sure it is cleaned at the end of the day (or project)and it has been in the shop for repairs just twice. Both times for the same problem (which was NOT fixed the first time). I love this machine and would not buy a new one for replacement.

Bernina 1090
by: Alexis

I have owned and used my Bernina 1090 for 18 years. I have sewn just about everything from tuille, to leather and I still love it! It has needed just a cleaning now and again.

I had an issue with the computer motherboard in 2008, but when I talked with my Bernina repairman, he said that it was still in great shape! So a little fix and I was on my way again.

I teach Family & Consumer Science (Home Economics) and am working with another brand machine currently.... oh for the durability and dependability of the Bernina! I would highly recommend Bernina to any facility wanting to offer clothing/textiles classes.

Bernina 1090s
by: Kim

I bought my Bernina 1090S sewing machine used on ebay. It's heavy as a rock, but extremely sturdy and reliable. I've never had it break and never had a thread jam.

My Bernina 1090S has always given me a nice even stitch, from cotton quilt piecing to heavy duty denim and synthetic leather with a fused fleece backing. It easily sews right through 2 very thick layers as if it were air. The stitches stayed even and the needle just powered through while the machine hummed along.

This "S" model has a needle up/down feature so it does well with slippery fabrics and quilt piecing and any other project that requires precision. The controls are very easy to understand. There is no computer screen. However, I consider this a plus. All the stitch width, length and selection are right up front.

You don't need a Phd in computers to find what you need. There are 28 stitches to select from including decorative and utility stitches as well as a stitch memory so you can create your own combination of stitches.

This Bernina 1090S utilizes the "old" style Bernina "feet" so you get a sturdy, well-made foot that is not going to flop around or pop off. It is absolutely and clearly on or off. And there is a wide variety of additional feet to chose from if you decide you need more than the nine (9) that come with this machine.

The Bernina 1090S also comes with a knee lift (aka Free Hand System)and a large slide on sewing table that gives you plenty of surface area to rest your project.

Winding a bobbin is a breeze and this one winds a bobbin a lot more evenly than any other machine I've sewn on. The thread path is simple and obvious, but you should still consult the manual when you first get the machine.

The only slight draw-back is that the throat is not as long as some of the newer machines. However, you can overcome this by sewing on a 45 degree angle to the machine so you have more "elbow" room to move your project around.

I am extremely glad to have this Bernina 1090S. It is rare to find one available for sale. Sadly, they didn't make them very long, opting for that fancy computer screen you see on newer models.

I for one appreciate the quick-select ease of push-buttons and twist knobs. Believe me, I have tried the fancy computer screen and I usually end up dragging out the owner's manual to get to where a push of a button would have gotten me in "the olden days."

This Bernina 1090S is a keeper!!!

Bernina 1090
by: DF

I have been using my Bernina 1090 for at least 20 years now and I still love it. It is 'partially' computerized, and it stitches like a dream. I am taking it in for service, not because its not working, but because I want to keep it running top notch condition. I do not think I have ever taken it in for service in 20 years, because I keep it clean and running.

I remember thinking that I'd spent too much on a sewing machine when I purchased it. I seem to remember it costing around $1600 with some extra feet and a table as a package. I certainly have gotten my money's worth out of it. Its been a real workhorse with thousands of miles on it.

I am a professional quilter and seamstress and I have had many hours of joy sitting in front of this machine creating. Although I am tempted to purchase a newer machine with fancy embroidery options, I will not trade in my 1090 because its such a great machine.

I don't think they make them like this anymore.

The best machine ever
by: Kit

I purchased my Bernina 1090 in 1990 and I've never had problem with it. It has been professionally cleaned once and I think it was kind of a waste of money because I've always been able to keep it clean and running smoothly myself. I have sewn clothes, decorator fabrics and curtain sheers with no problems. Now I make quilts. The only drawback is the small throat area but I have still been able to squeeze the quilts through. I will never sell this machine and I think it will eventually be passed down to one of my granddaughters.
Bernina should update and re-market this wonderful machine.

Bernina 1090
by: Pat

Bought it in 1991, never a minute rest, sew at least 3 hours a night. I'm a quilter and have quilted queen sized quilts on this machine. I also have had a Bernina 185, used it only for embroidery, My 1090 is the machine of choice.

I now have a Bernina 730 that I am forcing myself to use. I like the machine a lot but I know the Bernina 1090 so much better so I still use the 1090 as I don't have time to learn all about the 730, probably should have sold the 1090 so I would have to use the 730.

Bernina 1090
by: Maggie

I bought my Bernina 1090 on Ebay about 5 years ago from Germany and I love the machine. The stitch quality is excellent. I have owned the 180, and prefer the stitch quality on the 1090. Unfortunately there seems to be a fault in that the feed dog won't go down. If anyone has any ideas on what the problem may be I would be very grateful for any advice.

Dream Machine
by: Paddy

I purchased my Bernina 1090 in 1992 and it was the best purchase I've ever made. Sturdy, dependible, knee lift, needle down, embroidery stiches and absolutely the best satin stitch in the world AND the best free motion quilting machine. Who needs a stitch regulator?

I'm mainly a quilter, but also sew home dec projects, clothing and all sorts of items. Whatever needs doing, this machine does.

I've had it serviced a couple of times, I oil and clean it religiously, and have had a couple of extras done to it. My Bernina tech put the magnifying glass mount on it for me and I purchased a mini, "bright light", a couple of years ago to enhance the light. My Bernina tech told me, in his opinion, it was the best machine Bernina ever made and to never sell it. He said if I did sell it, I would probably get the same price I paid for it all those years ago. It is in demand because of the quality.

The only thing I would like is a larger throat area, but I've learned to machine quilt with this machine and it never lets me down. And an alphabet would have been nice. Nineteen years of service with a smile. Love, love, love this machine.

I loooovvvve my Bernina 1090s
by: Anonymous

I puchased my Bernina 1090s used in 2006. I have not regretted a day that I made that purchase. I used it everyday as a commercial sewing machine. Just two months ago I was using it when it just stopped working. I was so crushed. Now I am seeking for a good repair person. I am hoping someone can advice me on that. Thanks.
