Bernina 1130 sewing machine

by GGS
(Lancaster PA)

Quality like a Swiss watch.

This 20 year old Bernina 1130 model may sell for more than it did originally (currently $700-$800+ US in with all of the accessories) as it is in demand by serious sewers & quilters as a workhorse machine.

Good used Berninas like the 1130 can be hard to find, as the owners hate to give them up! Additional feet, accessories and replacement parts are easily obtained.

It was the first all-electronic Bernina, and is a powerful, but easy to use machine, for those that want advanced electronic stitch features (including an automatic buttonholer) and the famous Bernina knee-lifter, but don't need the embroidery & computer capabilities of new models.

Some prefer the easy to understand switches, buttons & dials on a a machine like this, to the computer screens that can be hard to read on new machines. I traded in an earlier model Bernina to get this one, primarily to get the needle-down feature, and have used it for 15+ years.

After heavy use (thread painting, which had me running the machine at high speeds for hours at a time) I did have a major mechanical part fail (the machine was about 12 years old at this point, and I was the 2nd owner), and my dealer replaced the part for only a labor charge.

The Bernina 1130 is appreciated for its mostly metal construction and metal extension table, since newer Bernina's & comparable high-end machines have switched to mostly plastic.

Yes, it's heavy, but I've carried it to classes, and have just strapped it to a wheeled cart if I had to carry it far from my car. It has a retracting cord feature in both the machine and the foot pedal, which you can't find on newer Bernina's selling for thousands of dollars.

Bernina 1130
by: Anonymous

I had a Bernina 1130 that I purchased in 1991. It was a workhorse that was worth every penney. Sadly, in 2007 I lost my home and everything I owned in the Calif.wildfires in San Diego,Ca. I now have the task of replacing my machine as well as a Bernina embroidery machine. Any suggestions?

you can replace your used Bernina.
by: Anonymous

So sorry to hear of your loss!

One word: Ebay. You can still find older Berninas, including the 1130! Of course, buying from a local dealer would be ideal, and save you $50. or so on shipping, but the internet is a great option if your Bernina dealer doesn't sell used machines.

Also: The Hinkletown Sewing Machines shop in Lancaster County PA sells used Berninas all the time that people have traded in, and they've cleaned and tuned them first of course. If they don't have the model you are looking for in stock, they will call you when one comes in. This store is one of the top Bernina dealers in the country and they guarantee their used machines.

Good luck and happy sewing!

The Bernina 1130 is great
by: Lily Domenech

I have had my 1130 machine since it came out, I guess about 20 years. I love it dearly and have sewn from fine silks to leather and ultrasuede. It is simple and easy to use.

I have never been interested in embroidery, even though the machine has the capability; but I have made very fine clothing for myself. I am tempted to update and if I did, it would be to another Bernina!

replacing my 1130
by: Anonymous

I lost my home in the 2007 Calif. wildfires and after several months of trying out different brands, I purchased a Bernina 730E from my local Bernina dealer. The sales person threw in a lot of extra software and other freebies. I can't explain the joy of having a great machine again.

Also a Bernina 1130 User
by: MJ

Bought this when it first came out. I went from a cheap Kenmore model to a Bernina, and it made a world of difference. It is a workhorse for sure. I used it for a small sewing craft business for a couple of years, and managed to make tons and tons of children's and adult clothes (four kids) for many years. I can't tell ya how many costumes I've made on that baby.

I have thought about selling it for a newer model, but I can't bear to part with its quality. I've bought and sold an industrial machine, replaced my overlock, but this machines never leaves! I guess it's a keeper!

Love my 1130!
by: NHQUILTER

I bought mine new at the same time a friend bought the 1230. I have never had a problem with my 1130 but she had lots with her 1230 and eventually put it away and bought another machine. Four years ago I bought the Virtuosa 153 Quilter's Edition (Alex Anderson Classic Edition)--I finally took it out of the box about 9 months ago to save wear and tear on the 1130. I absolutely HATE the Virtuosa 153 although I know several other quilters who love theirs! Besides the knee lift and needle up/down--don't you just love the automatic bobbin winder!

My 1130 IS FAILING
by: Anonymous

My 1130 might need a new motherboard, at least that is what the dealer tells me. She says I would have to pay 350 dollars to send the motherboard out and get it repaired since new motherboards are no longer being made. My machine was only sewing backwards at one point and that was fixed. Now it only sews tiny, tiny stitches. I love my Bernina 1130. Does anyone have any advice? ONE SAD QUILTER

repairs (new motherboard)
by: ggs

If you have a question about a replacement part, I suggest googling Hinkletown Sewing in Lancaster County PA (it's actually close to Ephrata PA in a tiny town called Hinkletown)and CALLING them for advice, or quotes on parts. They are open weekdays and Saturdays. They do so many repairs on used Berninas, that they probably keep many more parts in stock than the average local dealer. They often offer trade-ins on broken machines, as well, if you decide not to fix it. But a 1130 is well worth the investment in my opinion!!

Bernina 1130 with Knee Lift
by: Nancy

The top of the line Bernina 1130 sewing machine is work horse. I am a serious sewer. Over the past 15 years or more, I've done fine french sewing on thin fabrics, made mounds of quilts, sewn over thick denim seams while doing hems.

Used this machine on sail fabrics, decorator fabrics, stretch and lingerie fabrics without a burp. I love the needle up/down position which is controlled by the foot pedal. Raising and lowering of the presser foot can be accomplished by the knee lever.

I have total control. My hands never leave my work unless I desire to remove it from the machine. This machine has never failed me. It's not a lightweight machine yet easy enough to travel with when one has a roll case.

If looking for a used machine do not turn your back on the top of the line Bernina 1130. These machines were hand built and have a terrific reputation. I have one of the first 830 models they made and it is still running like a dream.

They asked if a used 930 would come available for me to purchase would I be in interested?INTERESTED??? of course!! They called me about 2 weeks, later. I am now the proud owner of another 930, sight unseen, was told it was in excellent condition. Price?? WAY cheaper than anything that I saw on Ebay. Bernina 1130 stuck in Reverse
by: Anonymous

I, too, have a Bernina 1130 passed down from my Mother. Love Love Love this machine.
However it decided several weeks ago to start sewing backwards..yes I checked to make sure I had not hit the reverse button. Took it into a Bernina Dealership for repairs and The Guy started up-selling me immediately. My husband was along...not sure whether The Guy figured he had a "whale"..."Hubby might step up to buy his wife a newer Bernina". I got the message yesterday that I needed to call The Guy in regards to my Bernina.....wondering if I am going to be told the machine is done and would I be interested in upgrading.
Has Anyone had this issue of the Bernina stuck in reverse? I am wondering if this is a MotherBoard issue and how much it might cost to repair.
Would appreciate Any Feedback or thoughts.
Thanks...Suzi

sewing in reverse: reply
by: ggs

Susie: did you end up getting it fixed? The problem with repairs at a dealership that just wants you to buy a new machine (which is the impression you got from your dealer!), is that they may inflate the cost of repairs to discourage you from fixing it. A Bernina 1130 is worth fixing!! If you haven't done anything yet, you may want to ask specifically what the parts & labor breakdowns are, and shop around on the repair. Again the Pennsylvania shop I listed above is _expert_ at fixing old Berninas, and trustworthy.

Bernina 1130 stuck in Reverse
by: Anonymous

GGS..thank you for your observation. I was told that there was just a ton of things wrong with my 1130. Did not even give me a quote to fix said too many things wrong but said might be interested in taking it for a trade. And while I was there picking up my "Dead" 1130 DH and I were given all the particulars on the new Bernina's.
Well..decided to get a 2nd opinion. Glad I did...was told the "StepUp Board" needed to be replaced/repaired..costing between $275-$325. Quite a contrast from what the Sewing Center told me. Needless to say the 1130 is being repaired.
Now I really question this Sewing Center because at the same time my 1130 was in for service so was my Janome machine. When I got it home..now mind you it is a 100 mile round trip for me and $75 service/repair cost..it was doing the same it did when I took it in...I immediately called them back to complain. Thats when I realized that maybe my 1130 wasn't as bad as they said. And even worse was a woman who had brought in her Mother's 1130 to have it evaluated the same time I brought mine..I asked The Guy how her machine was and he said hers was not fixable. Hope she had the insight to get a second opinion too.

Tiny, tiny stitches from 1130
by: Anonymous

I am in a dilemia. Could some of you please give me some advice? I have until tomorrow (9/30/10) to make up my mind to trade in an 1130 for a 640E. I have sewn on the 1130 almost daily for close to 24 years and I love the machine. Sometimes it wants to sew in very tiny, tiny stitches as it is sewing. I was told that it is doing that because it is older and needs to warm up before beginning to sew. It is never started to sew immediately when it is turned on. When I took it in that is what I expected to be fixed but was charged a large amount for taking it through the door and it wasn't fixed. I don't think the person wants to fix it. Another dealer told me that it could possibly be a magnet and something else that could be causing the problem because lint, etc. has gotten into a certain area in the head. I am between a rock and a hard place on this and would like to hear from some of you as to what you would advise. I hate to keep putting money into something that may not work right in the end. It doesn't sew the tiny, tiny stitches all the time just once in a while. When it happens I adjust the stitch to a higher number. I have a quilting ministry and it is frustrating for the ladies to be working and then this happens. I love Bernina machines and that is my top choice of all machines. You get what you pay for. I am thinking I should bite the bullet and take it to the other guy and see what he comes up with. Any other suggestions? Thanks for the listening ears and responses.

Tiny stitches, repair concerns
by: ggs

I'm sorry I have no experience with the problem you are having with stitch length. It's too bad your repair person isn't committed to really solving the problem, because I'm sure it could be solved. We all sometimes face this dilemma ( with car repairs, appliances, etc) and I guess you have to balance the value of the 1130 to you versus the repairs. It is very clear that many dealers just want to sell you a new machine. It seems to me they should guarantee the work or take it back (at no new charge) and they should consult with Bernina if they're not sure how to fix it!
Definitely trying to find a better dealer, or a repair person who doesnt work for a dealer (and is familiar with berninas!) would be an option. I have such a great dealer I need to count my blessings I guess!
While your friends using the 1130 may get frustrated when the tiny stitches thing happens, keep in mind that new machines (especially the digital controls/settings, and all the new "high tech" features) can be challenging to use too, especially for someone not using that machine all the time.
Good luck with your decision. I have a new bernina and still prefer my old 1130 for many tasks!

My 1130 Stuck in Reverse Update
by: Anonymous

I posted on the 8th of Sept because I was having a problem with my Bernina. Took it into my usual place and they wouldn't even give me a quote to repair in that there were so many things wrong. However they would trade it in for a newer Bernina....hmmmmm
I decided to get a "Second" opinion which I am glad I did. $385.00 later it is purring up a storm. It was not a Total loss as the other place had indicated.
While my Bernina was on "Sick Leave" I borrowed my Mother's Singer Professional 2010 machine...it was noisy and just felt flimsy. WHAT a difference when I got my Bernina 1130 back...
So moral to the story...if you have a Bernina 1130 KEEP IT! It is worth the repairs! It may not do what all the New Machines do but it is solid and worthy!

Repair issues
by: Ggs

@anonymous on Nov 20.
Please consider the above post, and get another repair opinion if you can. I'm shocked that your dealer expects YOU to pay shipping to another shop because they don't have the expertise to make a repair! I'd send a complaint to Bernina's home office, in fact. A Bernina dealer should have the competent skilled staff to make repairs, or they should get out of the business, and I'm sure Bernina requires their dealers to provide service! Of course, if they choose not to have a mechanic on staff, they should pay for shipping themselves to an off-site expert. Parts can be shipped to them from anywhere, and used parts are definitely available, so there really is no excuse.
@CJG re: the machine you want to sell.
You can do an "advanced search" on eBay and check the "completed listings" box to see what this machine has sold for recently. Keep in mind shipping costs, which are obviously hefty for heavy machines like this. This is not a forum for selling individual machines, so I'm not going to give advice beyond that. But good luck, and thank you for making your machine available to a lucky sewer somewhere who will make good use of it!

Bernina 1130 For Sale! Monterey, CA

I inherited a Bernina 1130, barely used back in the early 2000's. I know it works but have not used it besides testing it when I received it. I have taken it with me the last 2 times I've moved since it's such a wonderful machine, but I know I'm not going to get the use out of it I wanted so it's time it finds a better home. It comes with a wooden cabinet with the electric rising shelf that hides the machine and too many accessories to name. Please email me if interested: skarispeak@yahoo.com.

Bernina 1130 - Bobbin thread doesn't come up
by: kittyboxers

having a problem bringing the bobbin thread up. I've disassembled the race and hook several times; changed the needle, thread; threaded the bobbin as directed (thread spinning clockwise) and nothing I do will bring the bobbin thread up, either manually or by tapping the pedal. I thought the culprit was the needle, but I did change the needle a couple of times. I use Schmetz and tried a variety of types....Universal, top-stitching, quilting, etc. to see if one in particular would work. I've watched the needle go down into the slot under the throat plate and it looks like it's striking OK and I replaced the parts correctly that one takes out to clean and oil. I've gone over that part repeatedly, looking at photos, machine manual, etc. I've placed needles in the machine numerous times before this happened, so it just seems weird that all of a sudden I can't place a
needle properly.

Has anyone solved this problem before on an 1130? I've had the machine about a year and never had a problem with it. Have kept it clean and not abused it. This just happened out of the blue when I was cleaning and oiling according to the manual (and I've done this successfully before). My closest Bernina dealer is about a million miles away so would like to figure this one out myself if possible.

Bernina 1130 walking foot

I have not bought a walking foot but other feet that work fine as long as made for "old style" machine.

Do a google search with old style walking foot or go to ebay and do a "Bernina old style walking foot"

My Bernina store here in KC has "old Style" but the walking foot is about $149.00.
