Bernina 830 sewing machine

by sylvia - Jan 2009
(metro atlanta, GA)

I bought this little workhorse in Jan 1978 and I am still using it! I will never turn this Bernina 830 sewing machine in for an 'upgrade'.

It does such fine work and has never let me down. Having it serviced is not a problem since it is not computerized.

I do a lot of quilting and this machine has gotten me through a lot of projects. Other than a Singer Featherweight which I use for taking on the road to classes, I have no other machines.

This Bernina is my baby. I only came on this site because I'm thinking of purchasing another Bernina but I've just talked myself out of that! The old 830 remains my machine of choice.

The 830 is great!
by: Anonymous

I had the idea that this Bernina 830 model was a great machine. So when the owner of the machine passed I told the family that I would love to have it..

However upon receipt and use of the machine the motor proved to be bad. I invested in a new motor and have enjoyed many hours and years of use and have no interest in giving it up... It's a real treasure to own.

Need Needles for Bernina 830
by: Jan

I have had this machine since the 1980 and it still runs great. The only problem is that it required a special model needle #705B and they don't make it anymore.

You have to take the machine to a Bernina dealer to do a modification in order to use the 705H needle. I did that but the machine is not the same. The stitches skip and I don't trust the stitches anymore.

I always go over the seams twice. As a result I don't sew as much as I would like. Every once and awhile I find the old Bernina needle 705B somewhere and the machine runs like new. Anybody know where I can find those needles??

The Bernina 830 is easy to use
by: Ruth

I bought this machine from my aunt 2 years ago. I was just learning to sew. This is a fabulous machine. It is so easy to use.

Even though I have purchased another Bernina since then, I still use my 830 for some applications. My daughter wanted to learn how to sew so I started her on the Bernina 830.

She loves it as well. Thanks for such a great machine!

If you are having trouble winding a bobbin, just go to your local JoAnn's or similar store and buy the SideWider - it works with Bernina bobbins and I use mine for my 830 all the time.

Will never part with my Bernina 830
by: Bobbi

I purchased my Bernina 830 in 1971 for $400 (not inexpensive for me at that time). I have always "loved" my 830; I will never part with it!

My husband adapted an older cabinet with a pressure raising/lowering mechanism to accommodate out-of-sight storage, the flat bed sewing and the open arm.

The cabinet is as special as the machine. They really compliment each other. I am thinking about "taking it with me"; but maybe I will leave it to my son who was also "waiting" to be born that same year, although he has really never expressed a desire to learn to sew.

His older brother did learn to use it because he wanted to make special clothing for biking. It worked so well!

Won't part with my Bernina 830 machine
by: Joan

I bought my Bernina 830 sewing machine in April of 1974 in Canada. We had just had a total loss fire and I needed to make us some clothes.

I took the last of the insurance money and bought it ($550 Canadian). I intended it to be the only machine I would ever need again. I haven't been disappointed.

I made pants and shirts for my husband, clothes for my daughter and me. I've made curtains and household items, gifts for friends. I still use it.

I have had it serviced once, last year (2008). I keep it clean myself and oil it regularly. I haven't done much sewing other than mending the last few years but now I have a brand new granddaughter and my old friend and I are getting re-accquainted.

I briefly looked at others but this does everything I need. I love it and won't part with it.

Get the Bernina 830 if you can
by: Gloria

The Bernina 830 was indeed the perfect machine for it's time. I received the 830 as a high school graduation present from my parents in 1975, who I know saved the better part of a year to purchase it.

My father was an exacting mechanical engineer who chose the machine not only for it's reputation but it's stainless steel body. I was taught how to clean, care for and oil the machine during the included 6 classes and I have done so regularly.

NEVER have I had to have this machine serviced. It still runs as beautifully today, 34 years later, as it did when I first received it. I can easily sew fine fabrics, upholstery, drapery and denim.

My 15 year old daughter has pronounced that she enjoys using my "old" machine at home far more than she likes the new Berninas that the high school has purchased. My father passed away 2 months ago and I never missed an opportunity to tell him how grateful I was for my Bernina and to tell him the joy that I feel each time I sit down to sew.

I am finally thinking of purchasing a new Bernina for myself - one that will do a variety of embroidery stitches. BUT, I have no plans to let go of my 830. My daughter uses it almost more than I do these days so I guess we'll just have to share.

If you find a used 830, buy it. You will not be disappointed!

It is a sad day. My 34 year old Bernina 830 died. Well, the motor is beyond repair. I thought I could just take it to the local Berninca Repair shop and get a new motor. Not so fast. Everyone wants to sell me a new one and they say there isn't a motor out there. Where did you all find a Bernina motor? Any ideas for sources? Thanks in advance for the help!

For anonymous with 830 only straight stitch
by: old repair gal

The old 830s had a manufacturing problem with the camstack gear. The tended to crack, rendering all side-wise stitches dead. Thjis is a warranty repair, and a Bernina repair place will install a new camstack gear, and all will be well. I am betting that the machine is "stiff" every so often. Open the top and look at the gear with al the metal tracer disks stacked behind it. You may need to make it do a complete revolution to see the crack, but it will be obvious.

Needles and such
by: Diane

For the commenter looking for 705B needles. You really don't need them, just use Schmetz needles that are available everywhere. I've been using these needles and regular bobbins (not the Bernina brand) in my 830 for over 25 years and have never had a problem.

The 830 is the best machine I've ever owned far surpassing the disappointing Artista 180 that I bought in the late 90s. My 830 has sewn everything from delicate heirloom dresses to car interiors. I wouldn't trade it for anything!

Bernina 830 for 5 bucks
by: Lisa

I have been an avid sewer for the past 13 years. My budget at the time allowed me to buy a Walmart Brother machine which I've sewn on for years. A year ago last summer I had been at a garage sale and noticed a sewing machine off in the distance.

I was hardly looking to buy something different UNTIL I noticed it was a Bernina 830!!!!!!!!!! Oh how I had coveted one for quite sometime. When I asked the lady how much for the machine, she replied $5. Yes you read that right. Five dollars!

Inside I was running around and screaming with my hands flailing. But WHAT was WRONG with it? Embarrassed, she admitted that she had inherited the machine and never sewn a stitch on it at all. I figured, even with repairs, it would be money well spent. It included a red case and I carted it away.

While at home, I noticed the foot pedal was gone as were the attachments. I went back to the sale to inquire of the foot pedal, did they still have it? I left my number and by that evening, the seller had located the foot pedal. As well as a box of every attachment and the original manual. The only thing I am missing is the long bar found in the case. This machine is in perfect condition! a Five dollars well invested! The seller did not know or care what she was selling.

I was definitely in the right place at the right time! I love my Bernina 830! A garage sale is a great way to locate bargains. You would be surprised how many people do not know the value of what they are trying to get rid of!!!!

My Bernina 830 was a graduation present in 1977 when I got my bachelor's degree. I still have it and still love it.

I have other machines (Singer 301,221 and an Elna green) but my Bernina is still my go to machine, especially for quilting.

Now I'm looking into a cabinet for it. Sorta a present to my machine for many years of service. Anyone have any recommendations?

Back in 1975 my husband bought me a minimatic 830 which has done tailoring, draperies, kids clothes, tons of mending....but the 001 regular sewing foot is getting kinda wobbly. Anywhere I can replace it with a new one???
Right now it is getting rewire job done on the motor, and when that is fixed, I'll be back to work...a new grandchild coming and I want to make cloth diapers, plus other fun stuff.

Bernina 830's ROCK!
by: Marc

Well, I've got the $5.00 Bernina 830 beat... I got mine for free! It was apparently dropped, and the thread take-up lever (I think) was bent like a pretzel. So, the owner threw it in the street. My dad straightened the lever out while the machine was still lying in the street... lol... The machine works great. I will have to get the machine 'tuned-up' just to be safe, but it's really a lovely machine. I use common Schmetz needles, BTW.

Greatest machine
by: Bernina Lover

I have owned 830 since 1975 and absolutely will not part with it. I now use it mainly to hem my grandson's pants, but still find it to be reliable for special projects as well. Stitches are still true and it handles all types of fabrics with such ease. I use the 70H needle for most of my projects and the stitches are even. I have loved this machine from the first day of purchase and won't part with it.

the 830 rocks
by: jeanne Markell

My husband sold Christmas trees one holiday season and presented me with 350 $1 bills wrapped around spools of thread, with the note: "Merry Christmas...use this to buy the best sewing machine you can find to sew for you and me, our future kids and future grandkids". I was a newly launched Extension Home Economist so I knew my sewing machines! I bought the 830 in 1973 and it's still going strong. Indeed, it's produced everything from leisure suits for my husband, decades of fashions or me and our home, as many garments as our sons would wear (they were not so keen on my creations by their teen years though). Now, just today I am sitting down at the still humming Bernina 830 to make some things for our first grandchild, expected to arrive in about 6 weeks. I join the others who say there will never be another machine for me!!

Bernina 830 sewing machine
by: HelenE

I have just acquired an old Bernina 830 from a friend whose mother seems never to have used it. I have a 1120 which I just love, but wanted the extra stitches and she was just going to give it to charity otherwise. It's in great condition but there is no manual with it and I don't seem to be able to get the stitch selector to make a difference. I can do zig zag and straight. How do I get the stitch selector to work. I thought it looked pretty simple.

Bernina 830
by: Sharon

I grew up in a tailoring / manufacturing envionment. My father was the inventor of the chain stitch embroidry machine. My family made clothing for movie stars and music performers. I learned to sew at an early age on a 31/15 -- that's a commercial grade of Singer in an industrial envionment. This gave me a "no fear" attitude toward sewing.

While in college I worked for a Bernina dealer and she hooked me on Bernina's. I bought the 830 when it first came out and I am still using it today. I wish I had a dollar for every stitch!!

I am an interior designer with my own workroom. I make everything from awnings to decorator pillows, custom bedding and draperies to clothing. I have looked at sewing machines from time to time thinking I need to "get with it" -- but I love my sewing machine. The reviews say it's great for a beginner -- but I am no beginner.

I know a lot of people who sew but I know of no one who sews as much or as varied as myself. To change the width or length of a stitch is just a dial -- which you can use as you sew. It makes gathering a breeze -- and when you are making king dust ruffles -- that's a great help!! I could go on -- but there's actually too much to say.

I have taken it in for service maybe 6 times in 34 years. The last 2 times the service man tried to buy it. He said they just don't make 'em like the 830 anymore -- I am sure the new Bernina's are great too -- but I just don't have a reason to change. I just love my faithful - perfect friend!

Bernina Series 8 - 830
by: Anonymous

I have two Bernina 830s. One is a dream and I have had so few problems. The other one has been a problem child from the get go but it may be okay now after just coming back again from the shop.

This time, the dealer asked me to sew for about an hour to make sure it was working fine. It went very well and now I am hopeful that I have two dream machines. I have had problems as well with the BSR foot. It will be fine and then start messing up very badly. It is like the bottom tension suddenly gives out. The spring has been replaced but I have not used it since then. I am keeping my fingers crossed.

Some of the issues I have had may be related to Coats and Clark thread. It does seem that when I am having problems with skipped stitches, I switch to another brand and all is well.

830 Bernina

I have purchased the new 830 Bernina Sewing Machine, I upgraded from a babylock ellegante 2, I love this machine but I do not love the prices of the accessories for this machine. However I have discovered that you can use other feet with this machine, I have purchased the #75 & #77 adapters and used my brother walking foot. It works perfectly.

I was wondering what others have discovered too about this machine. I just couldn't understand how Bernina can charge $130 for a walking foot?
Feedback welcomed.

Bernina 830 electronic
by: Frank 't Hart

My wife got one when she graduated from her study occupational therapy in 1977. Ever since then she has used this magnificent machine to make lots of clothing for her self and later for our children
it has been repaired only once and that was two years ago she did the maintenance herself (little bit oiling and cleaning now and then).

Unfortunately yesterday evening the motor reached its end after 33 years. (new motor = euro 200)
on the internet I found a 830 'regular' (not an electronic footpedal but two speed)

We bought it today and collected it near The Hague (Netherlands) with one year full warranty..(.in total euro 250,-)

So she can go on with the bernina show and my wife can finish her coat! And hopefully they will live together for many more years...

Bernina 830 record
by: Edith Alexander

I have been a professional seamstress for the past 50 years. A VERY BUSY ONE I might add! I bought my Bernina 830 in the 70's and am still sewing on it today. Now I averaged sewing 8-10 hours per day, although some of that time was spent at the cutting board or the iron. My machine works today, as good as it did the day I bought it. No part has ever been replaced, and I have done all my own maintenance.

I have upholstered furniture, made many leather dresses for rodeo queens, made designer jeans, drapes, and yet sewn the finest silks brought by my customers who traveled the world, and bought fabrics wherever they went. I also taught sewing classes off and on, and always took my own machine. Many Bernina's were bought as a result of my recommendation.

I have my grandmother's old Bernina 830 and for the life of me I can not figure how to control the speed. The thing has 2 speeds too slow or rocket speed which is uncontrollable. I have studied the manual but can not find any way to adjust it. This is very frustrating for me as I learned to sew on a machine that was very easy to control. Can anyone offer any advice?

Foot pedal problems on Bernina 830
by: Emma

Hi T, I hope you're reading this...

I have the same problem with my Bernina 830 foot control -- zero to 60 but no speeds in between! I have read that this is due to an internal component in the foot pedal (carbon discs?) becoming worn out with use. Some advice will tell you to get a new foot control, but as these are far from cheap, see if you can get a competent repair person to open up the foot pedal and replace the worn part -- it's considerably cheaper. The carbon discs are available for sale separately on the internet.

Best of luck

Bernina 830 (8 Series)
by: CJ Tinkle

I've had my Bernina 830 for just over a year now, and it is the most fabulous sewing machine ever! I also have a 630, and in the past I've owned the 170, the 440, and the 730, which I traded on the 830.

There isn't anything this machine doesn't do like a dream, with the exception of the BSR foot. The spring upgrade helps immensely, but I find the speed of the BSR to be far too slow and it's prone to occasional skipping.

Saying that, I quilt on a longarm so I honestly don't care about this feature. I like using the BSR for "artsy" stuff and quilting small things like pillows, for that it's a dream to use.

My 630 was always my "go to" machine, but since owning the 830 I've only sewn on it twice in the past year... the 830 is just so much better.

The dual feed is hands down my favorite feature, and has made an AMAZING difference in the quality of my piecing. I also love the hover foot, the gorgeous built in decorative stitches, the ability to send the stitches over to the embroidery side and sew them out in the hoop, or even send them to your computer for further customization with the Bernina software.

The embroidery quality is par non, and the new Jumbo hoop really makes it fun.

I use standard Schmetz needles in my machine, and my threads of choice are Isacord, Mettler, any Superior thread product... they all work with no problems.

Feel free to visit my website... all projects made with my 830.

Hello, my name is Jacqui and I live on the Australian island of Tasmania, furthest south of the continent. I have the 830 Bernina, sold in a garage sale for just a few dollars. It had just been serviced and it is glorious.

There is a switch near the bottom that says 'max' and 'min', can you tell me if that is meant to be the speed I can make the machine go please? It's like a rocket, vroom from 0 to 100 in two seconds and too fast for me to handle. There is no mention of this switch in the manual, no picture, it's like it is invisible ... chuckle!

Thank you again.

Happy to be sewing again without all the failures of computerized machines
by: RL Schaefer

Recently I was lucky enough to come across a reconditioned, by that I mean, new motor and foot pedal, 1980 Bernina 830.It had one previous owner, who took great care of it.

I am back to my original comfort and satisfaction level of sewing.
I had a Husqvarna Viking D1-USB that I also had made a post about on here. That machine took the joy out of sewing -period.

I agree with others that being lucky enough to own one of these well built and well cared for machines is priceless. No more crazy malfunctions- just perfect stitches every time.

Granted there aren't the "bells and whistles" that I was told I must have, I really don't. And I don't miss them either. I limit my sewing to quilting and light garment making. And this machine does have some decorative stitiches, which is fine enough for me. And does very well. The machine is very easy to operate and care for.

I am so happy to own this machine, which requires little care, (keeping the lint out and periodic oil squirts- very easy) and heaven forbid if something should go wrong, I have someone in the community that is quite capable of fixing a simple mechanical machine.

Along with the other priceless machine I was lucky enough to pick up, most recently, that being a Singer 201, I am very content, and my only regret is that 2 yrs ago, I bought the idea of the "latest" is the greatest, and wish I had spent more time doing better research, as this would most certainly been my first pick, over anything new on the market. And I would have been financially better off. :(

So for anyone seeking a good, solid machine, and you are not heavily into machine embroidery work, look for a well cared for used Bernina 830, or even 930, you can't go wrong and you will save yourself a lot of headaches AND $$$$.

Stay away from the newer, computerized junk, you'll find you won't be happy with it or the lack of decent customer service. Can't stress that one enough.

Sewing Machine Table
by: Anonymous

In 1973 I had made my wedding gown on my mother's good old Singer. My sister then bought a fancy do everything Singer and I was extremely jealous. My husband told me I could go buy myself a machine but I might want to do some research because I wasn't going to get another one for 30 years. I have had my Bernina 830 for 36 years now and wouldn't ever think of replacing it. My sister replaced her fancy Singer with a Bernina a few years later. I bought my daughter a Bernina as a graduation gift from college but I like my "old" one much better.

Ten years ago when we moved into a new home I found these plans for a sewing machine table. I purchased the plans and the hydrolic lift, brought them to a Amish carpenter and several weeks later had a beautifully made, very functional work center.

http://www.woodcraftplans.com/osc/product_info.php?products_id=705&pn=WIFS-1013

Shaker Sewing Cabinet Plans
[WIFS-1013] $14.00

When we set out to design this Shaker-style sewing cabinet, a compact yet still attractive and functional piece of furniture was wanted. Plenty of useful features and storage options resulted. The cabinet IS designed for the sewing machine to sink down into the table on a hydrolic lift and the plans detail where you can purchase the necessary lift mechanism, or it can be omitted.

Included with your plan are the following: detailed instructions, large measured drawings, a complete list of materials, full size patterns for any curves, and a few photos. The best plan we've seen for a "sinking machine" cabinet.

good old 830

Well my Bernina 830 machine has served me extremely well for 30 years, has helped cloth my 4 children and some of their friends, plus their children, but it just could not handle the enthusiasm showed by my two little grandsons who, in an unsupervised moment decide to 'race' the motor and it has now burnt out. Unfortunately my dear old friend has gone as the repairman could not help.

Consequently I am now trying to find a good secondhand sewing machine as my income will not cover a new bernina as much as I would love one, especially as I make a lot of the grandchildren's clothes. this granny is quite devastated!

I bought my machine new over 20 years ago and have never regretted it; and at the time paying for it was a financial struggle. It has been wonderful. I learned how to quilt with it, how to create heirloom clothing with it and have used if for everything: wedding dresses, Halloween costumes, doll clothes, regular clothes and even upholstery.

It's even somewhat portable, a little on the heavy side but it goes to classes with me in it's now rather beat up red case.

Bernina 830

I have been using a Bernina 830 since I bought it in February 1975. It has only been repaired a couple of times during those years. Once was when the foot control decided it would work by itself, and last week when the capacitor was replaced. I think the motor was rewound as well. Not bad. I also have a Bernina Minimatic which is just as old and just as good.

Need Foot Pedal
by: Ann

I've owned my Bernina 830 since 1976. Best investment I've ever made. I've had it cleaned once and looked at for the stitch and spent less than $75 over the past 34 years. My foot pedal (Type 232 is a three prong) needs to be replaced. When I took it in, he said that the circuit inside needs to be replaced and Bernina doesn't offer it anymore. Is there someone who has one or do you know of a dealer who sells them. Thanks

830 and 801
by: LouSue

Have owned my Bernina 830 for 30+ years and have no interest in owning any other brand sewing machine. These models are the BEST! The Bernina 801 is basically the same as the 830, only it doesn't have all of the extra decorative stitches.

The 830 and 801 are 100% dependable, always get the job done, and are the perfect machine for any sewing job you have. I sew a lot, so every few years I bring my machine in for a complete tune-up. The original belt on my 830 last 27 years before it had to be replaced. Always remember to oil these machines and they will last a lifetime.

I love it! I have had my Bernina 830 for 34 years. It has been in the shop only twice for my over oiling and trying to sew 6 layers of leather. I bought an used 860 and my sister talked me out of it. She loves it. I just bought a 1630 and am anxious to try it on something. I could sell these machines. I also have a Bernina serger that I have not used yet.

Bernina old 830
by: Laurel Lee

I have owned my Bernina 830 for 30 years. I paid $800 for it and it was a huge expense for me then. But, I don't think I have bought a better investment, since. I looked up the price on one on E-Bay last night and it has held it's value throughout the years. Still selling for $500-700.

I have sewed a million miles on it and the stitch quality is still as good as the day I bought it. I have had the spring for the foot lift replaced, plus the bobbin fill mechanism, and the belt that turns the wheel. Other than a few regular maintenance visits to the shop, that's all that I have needed to spend. I do regularly oil, and vacuum it out, but that's all.

I have bought about 6 extra feet and am now learning how to stipple quilts and do more free motion embroidery, which I prefer over embroidery machine patterns. I would buy a good used 830 instead of a new Singer, Elna, White, Janome or any other machine out there in this price range any day. I still help family and friends look for them and buy them.

I considered buying a new 830 but know I will never get $6,000 more good out of it than what I have, plus I would have to learn how to use it. If you can find one, buy it, if only to use as a second machine.

Bernina 830
by: Susan

My parents bought me a used Bernina 830 when I was in High School. They gave me the choice between that or a brand new top of the line Singer or Brother that was all plastic, computerized and push button (lots of bells and whistles). After consulting my High School sewing teacher (program now extinct) I opted for the used Bernina. That was 31 years ago! The machine has been a work horse and has traveled back and forth across the country with me with every move.

I have finally taken it in for servicing (for the very first time since it was purchased 31 years ago) as I figure it could use a tune up and professional clean/lube :-)

I would recommend this machine to anyone who wants a trustworthy sewing machine. I drooled a bit looking at the newer machines (haven't looked at any other since I got mine)...maybe someday. The 830 is just an excellent machine that will do enough fancy stuff for those who need it on occasion, but mainly want to always know their machine will never break down or have problems!

830- THIRD GENERATION MACHINE!
by: Candace

My mother purchased our Bernina 830 in 1976 (I was 9) so that I could finish up my sewing 4-H project, the "other machine" kept giving us fits. I learned to sew on that Bernina all those years ago and now my own daughters (ages 10 & 12)are learning to sew on it too! We sewed/mended everything from canvas irrigation dams and trampoline tarps to silky underwear and prom dresses. When our mother passed away, my siblings asked if there was anything special of her's that I would really like to have. Her Bernina was it. I took it to a sewing center to have a tune up and a good go-through. The repair man said there was not a thing wrong with it, and "they don't make 'em like they used too!" My mother and I spent many hours working on projects together through the years-great memories! and this old jem looks to be providing the same for me and my girlies!!

Bernina 830
by: Alexis

My mom was a professional seamstress and used her Singer machine until it gave up the ghost.

One day, Mama and I went out on an adventure to a Bernina store where she brought home the Bernina 830. I was taught to use a sewing machine with this machine, and I have sewed on it for 30+ years. It's in need of some TLC, but that's after being shipped across the country 7 years ago by FEDEX ground delivery agents who were apparently aspiring World Cup athletes and practiced on my beautiful sewing machine!

I will be doing everything I can to rebuild this machine, regardless of dents, chips and dust - it's unbeatable!

Foot pedal problems
by: Anonymous

I have the old Bernina 830 Record and when I sew and take my foot off the foot pedal it continues to sew slowly all by itself. If I give the foot pedal a quick step it will stop. I am afraid this could be an expensive fix, that is if it can be fixed at all. Any sewing machine repair people out there that can tell me what's wtong with the pedal and how much it would cost to repair? I had to have something fixed with the foot pedal about 10 years ago and that cost me $125.00! I hate to put that much money into this old machine as I do have other sewing machines, but I have so many presser feet and extras that I love about this machine, that I would hate to let it sit there or sell the parts. Too bad those great presser feet won't fit othetr machines!

I bought my Bernia 830 mid 1970's and still have it. I am trying to locate a bobbin tire and can't seem to find the right one. They all seem to be too narrow. Any good ideas? It is kind of hard to sew without bobbin thread!

Well folks, after not bearing to part with my 830 I picked it up after the diagnosis of 'not repairable' as per my posting June 30, 2010, and put it aside in the garage (in a dry area) with the wish of 'one day I will find someone to repair it". I can now say that I found a sewing machine magician!!! In Waikanae on the Kapiti Coast I was recommended to this lovely gentleman who repaired my 830! YES! Only $230 and wow, I have my bernina back and am back at the quilting/sewing table. A very happy Grandmother not to mention daughter and grandchildren now placing their orders......

Bernina 830 - bought in 1976 for well over $1000 US Dollars
by: Leilani

Machine has served me well all these years. Have sewn gossamer silks as well as heavy upholstery fabrics. Only complaint...I don't have the double presser feeder foot that guides very "slippery" fabrics through so the fabric doesn't shimmy. Takes practice and skill to control w/o this special feeder foot. Almost gave up my Bernina 830 when I saw a Pfaff machine (1990s model) that comes with this special presser foot. Glad I hung onto my old, trusty Bernina 830. I lost the original User's Manual so I'll have to buy a copy.

Bernina 830

Gifted to me by my mother in 1987. My parents owned a little shop, Mum sold yarn barn wool, and Dad repaired sewing machines. It had been used by my Mum for years before she gifted it to me. I still use my Bernina 830 often, I am a quilter, and this machine has, and will continue to serve me until another Bernina is purchased. Even then, I will never give this one up. :) It holds many memories for me of my parents, both passed on now.

Bernina 830 Record experts, please help!
by: Danielle

Please help! My rating doesn't count because I'm a brand new sewer. My mom gave me her old Bernina 830. I can not get the tension to work for me. Every time I sit down to it, I sew for a while and then realize the tension hasn't been working and I have to unpick everything. I get so frustrated that I put it away for 6 more months. I've had it serviced twice and they say it's in mint condition so it must be a problem with my sewing abilities! We have moved somewhere new and the only Bernina dealer around is trying to talk me into parting with it and buying a new one. I see that they sell for a lot on ebay, but after reading all the reviews here, and trying to sort through all the reviews on newer machines (so confusing), I think I would be crazy to let it go! Has anyone else had a problem with tension on this machine? Is it possible for me to learn to sew on this or would I be better off with a simple electronic machine like the dealer keeps trying to convince me? Thanks in advance for your help!

Tension
by: Daryl

Danielle,
1st make sure that your bobbin thread is inserted correctly. Look at your instruction manual. If you don't have a manual I posted that you can download one free and gave the website(see posting above yours).

2nd make sure that when you remove the thread from the top of your machine that you DO NOT pull it backwards through the tension disks! Snip your top thread and pull the thread out from the needle, just the way it sews. Make sure your presser foot is in the up position when doing this. This will prevent a lot of future tension problems.

3rd try sewing on a scrap and check the tension. If it is too loose, tighten it and if it is too tight, loosen your tension. The tenison numbers are located in the front onf the machine above the Bernina wording. Remember "righty tighty", "lefty loosey". Try sewing on your scrap and adjusting the tension a small amount by turning the number dial either to the right or left. Keep playing around until your stitches get better.

Another thing you might make sure that you have the correct needle size and type for your fabric. Also what size and type of thread are you using? Some machines can be picky and sew beautifully or just awful when changing needles and thread. Make sure you start with a new needle when you practice and change your needle after about 8-10 hours of sewing time. It could very well be your needle could be slightly bent and that could be the issue with your tension.

Is your machine clean and free of lint? This is another issue that can cause tension problems. Clean your machine after 8 hours of use. Make sure you oil your machine regularly too.

I had an old Kenmore that was a great machine and when I started having tension issues I got rid of the machine thinking it was the machine's fault, but most of the time it ends up being "operator" error. I've learned the hard way through owning several machines and getting rid of 2 when I probably didn't need to. So good luck and keep plugging away at it and you'll get it. All machines end up with tension issues if you don't pay attention to the things I mentioned above, whether they are brand new or second hand machines. Rarely do you end up with a lemon. If your service tech. says it's in good working order, then it should be.

I bought my Bernia 830 in 1977. I love it still. I mend my husbands work blue jeans all the time. when my daughter wanted to learn to sew, my mom bought her simple White machine, but, no she wanted MY bernina. Well, it didn't happen. I make doll clothes, dog stuff and stretchy body suits with no problem. I have a serger, but my Bernina 830 is still my first choice.

problems with the bobbin. first the whole mechanism fell out and was repaired. Now the bobbin pin is not holding the bobbin in at all. I bought this machine in 9/10 and I have needed to have it fixed twice.

For this much money, I don't think that i should be having problems like this. Trying to find tutorials so, perhaps I could fix this, are unavailable.

Big Troubles with my new Bernina
by: Anonymous

So sorry everyone to put a negative spin on the 830. I have owned the new version since May of last year. Have had nothing but trouble with it. Have it in for repairs 1 - 2 times per month. I'm getting to a point where something must give. The machine is wonderful. I love it to pieces. But I spend more time trying to problem solve issues that I do sewing.....

It sounds like the old 830 was a great work horse. I'm hoping for better luck in the future with my new one....

My mom has a newer machine (Janome) with all the digital gadgets. She passed on to me my Grandma's Bernina 830. Last May she showed me how to make a pillow case, and now we are going into business together! I love using the Bernina! It handles a lot of different projects, and I can count on it.

I don't even need all the computerized stuff... I still have control over the changes I need to make from project to project. It does have to go to the shop for a full tune up this week, but it definitely is due for that.

Bernina 830 Record

I've had this Bernina 830 record since I was 25 years old and I'm 60 now so that's 35 years. It is a tank - I've only had to do regular maintenance on it - oil & cleaning. I've sewn any and everything on it. My 30 year old daughter has been into sewing since she graduated from college and wanted my machine. I suggested that she find one to buy and wait to inherit mine. I plan to live a long, long time!

Rolls Royce of Sewing Machines
by: Elaine

Hi I fell in love with the 830 when I was able to use the one in school for my GCE needlework, and always said that I would have one one day. In 1973 when we were moving to Malta to live for a couple of years my husband bribed me into leaving my very old faithful hand Singer machine behind by promising to buy me a new sewing machine when we got out there. Lo and behold - there was the 830!! My husband kept his promise, although it was expensive for us at the time, and I am still using the machine, 38 years later. It has sewn absolutely everything from dolls clothes to boat sails, children's clothes to wedding dresses with no problems. I, like others, have been tempted from time to time, with the latest machines with all the mod cons but have never given in, as I always remember my sewing mistress saying 'this is the Rolls Royce of sewing machines'. How right she was.

by: KC

I got my first 830 Bernina in 1976 and every once in a while I take it in for what I call a million mile tune up. Everyone thinks I'm crazy but that is how much I use it.

A few years ago I bought a 2nd 830 Bernina as a back up for when my machine was in the shop. It sounded terrible but bought it anyway. Messed with it a little and oiled it. A little better but not good enough.

So I took it to a shop here in town within a week it sounded like a new one would. Thought I would never get rid of it but at this point I must. Everyone asks for the serial number to find out how old it is. So far no luck even called a dealer and they said to look at Bernina USA but that wasn't an option either.

So how do you find out when it was manufactured? I have the serial number. Why is it so difficult?

I will start looking for an equal replacement bargain soon!

My parents owned a "Yarn Barn" while I was growing up, and added the Bernina line of sewing machines while in my teens. My father repaired, my mother taught lessons. :)

On my daughter's first birthday in 1983, my Mum gave me her Bernina 830. I'm pretty sure I cried! I love this machine, and will never sell it. I still sew, quilt, and have recently increased the amount of time I spend in it's company. It's like having a little visit with my Mum each time I sit at the machine, she passed 15 years ago. I can still hear her voice giving me hints.

I am currently looking to purchase a newer machine, and my daughter is waiting patiently for her turn to own this family heirloom.
