Bernina 930, 807 and Bernina Activa 130

by Frances Carpenter
(MS)

I bought my first Bernina in 1986, Bernina Record 930 Electronic. I love this machine. The settings are easy to understand and use. Metal feet and attachments. Not plastic like they are now.

It is a little heavier than what I want to tote to quilt classes and sewing classes but I have purchased several other machines and I still sew on the 930 more than any other I have.

I have never had a serious issue with this machine. Cleaning and servicing it is all it's ever needed. I own the 807 an even older machine but it is great for taking to classes.

The 130 is a simple machine that I take to classes too. You will never regret a Bernina, newer or older one. They are so wonderful when it comes to quality and ease.

Keep Your Older Bernina
by: Cathy L/AZ

Hi!
You are soooooooooooo lucky to have a Bernina of the Past. They truly lived up to the Grand Name of Bernina. I would not give you a dime for the Bernina of today. They are not made as well as they were at one time plus dealers and Bernina will not stand behind their machines or parts. When some one ever asks me about my 200e or anyother Bernina machine, I tell them research, research and research some more. Read all you can and talk to people before you make that pricey purchase. I did all that and still ended up with a lemon of a machine. So you readdy will not know until you use a machine for a while. then its too late.I say a prayer everytime I start to sew. I never know when it will not live up to its name.

Activa 130
by: Charles Johnson

Sorry, but my wife has this machine and it seems to give periodic trouble with jamming and inconsistent stitch length. We took it to a dealer in Lisbon and it only helped for a while.

My impression compared to a 45 year of old White that we own is that the Bernina is not designed to last. The White just keeps on ticking.

I have had a Bernina 807 for 30+ years, and it has given me splendid service. I cannot say enough good about it.

All Berninas
by: Jeanne-M Turner

At one time we only bought Bernina machines for school and college use. They stood up to a lot of hammering. What has happened since?

Singer also, was a name of quality but alas, they were bought out by another company and since then, they can no longer be proved reliable. I know this as we know the original Singer family personally. Maybe that we are now too sophisticated, wanting top new technology at the expense of a simpler, more reliable machine that can be used as a work horse.

I have a Janome 6500 for my work house needs and has stood the test of time and much semi industrial work. I only use my Brother Galaxy machine for embroidery or fine and delicate work and for this it has been marvelous over the last eight or more years but I would not risk it on curtains, upholstery or even general dress making. It would not have lasted so long.

Like today's computers, one of which I have just replaced after 7 years of constant work all day long. My new one, top of the range 4 quad etc, is not expected to have a life of more than 4 to 5 years I have been told. How times have changed, More these days for less.

Can it do
by: Natascha

I just want to ask does it thread paint (drop feed) and you control the embroidery and free motion quilting. Also is there a button you can taper? Like eg if you want to satin stitch a stem and fill it in manually can you make the stitches small and large in width?

My Bernina 930
by: Cathy Whalen

The 930 is amazing!! My husband bought it for me in the 1980s. I would never replace it,I have never had a problem with it in all these years. In fact I made my daughter's silk wedding dress with it in 2007. The 930 was Bernina's top of the line model & was discontinued when the first computerised model arrived; however, the models below the 930 were still sold. I was told it was because they did not want customers to buy the 930 instead of the computerised model.
