Bernina 1008 Sewing Machine
Making Quality Stitches the Easy Way

The Bernina 1008 is a reliable, versatile, and user-friendly sewing machine.

Most professional sewers have used the model 1008 from Bernina since it provides an excellent range of decorative patterns and practical stitches that create some of the finest quality sewing around.

This heavy duty, traditionally built, entry-level sewing machine is set with all the major features normally found in general purpose sewing machines.

This is why it also has been the foremost choice of schools, colleges, and universities.

Bernina 1008 Review

The Bernina 1008 sewing machine features a wide range of accessories such as the patented CB hook system that provides perfectly balanced stitches, whether sewn on fragile textiles or on heavy denims.

Its variable stitch width and length settings can be adjusted to achieve proportionate stitches between 0 and 5mm. Its 5-needle positions make sewing quite easy since moving the fabric is absolutely unnecessary while changing the line of sewing.

The functions are available together with 16 different stitch designs to choose from, including a 6-step button hole that delivers perfect density on both left and right beads as these are both sewn in the same direction.

These buttonholes can also be sewn using the feed dog drop, which is designed with an external switch in a very convenient location. By lowering the drop feed, you can also create wonderful embroideries as well as freehand quilt designs.

With 5 choices of presser foot soles, any sewing project can be achieved without difficulty and are all supplied as standard. Sewing tubular items such as trouser hems and sleeves can be effortless with its slender free arm, and when done, the thread cutter conveniently removes the sewing project from the machine while the threads are safely secured until the next use.

The Bernina sewing equipment includes in its package the following accessories:
  • Regular zigzag foot
  • Blind hemming foot

Bernina 1008's practicality and versatility is absolutely perfect for beginners considering that the machine's easy-to-use functions automatically instruct you on which stitch length and width, needle position, and presser foot to use for best results. Its stitch selection is fast and easy, making it ideal for sewing crafts, garments and other school or home projects.

Advantages Of Bernina 1008

1. It is a very sturdy, heavy-duty machine that will surely last for years.
As mentioned, it has been used by schools for so many years and its reliability speaks for itself.

2. Its feed dog drop's convenient location makes freehand embroidery easy, especially for beginners.

3. The machine is equipped with an accessory box that slides unto the free arm giving the sewer a larger working area.

4. Its stitches are of excellent quality and you can choose from a wide range of stitch designs that include the reverse feed utility stitches and decorative stitches.

5. It is equipped with an all-metal CB shuttle that is found in many of the more expensive machines. You get to have this for a very affordable price.

Disadvantages Of Bernina 1008

1. The top thread usually breaks when the user does not stop sewing.
The thread end gets caught back into the machine and wraps around the take-up lever pivot points causing premature wear to certain parts of the machine.

2. It is heavy and a little bit noisier as compared to other sewing machine models and has a tendency to vibrate when stitching at fast speeds.

3. It includes a 6-step process for stitching buttonholes, a feature criticized by most reviews. Newer models now have a one-step buttonhole that creates more consistent buttonholes.

4. It does not have an adjustable presser foot.

5. It does not have a needle threader.

Consumer Reviews
I started with the Sapphire 850 and used it for a few days, next was the Singer 404 for a few days, and today I used the Bernina 1008. I was literally blown away by the perfect 1/4-inch seam from the very beginning of the seam to the very end of it. I think I expected it to be a little harder to keep the seam straight but it wasn't. It was so easy. -Knanna
