Brother 2600i

I bought the Brother 2600i sewing machine late in August, 2008. Now, just a little over 14 mos later, it quit on me in the middle of a project. Since the warranty was only 1 year, I'm out in the cold with regard to getting repairs covered.

When I took it to a Brother authorized service center, I was told it was a cheap machine and not worth repairing. It would have cost me as much as I paid for the machine simply to take it apart to determine what was wrong with it. When I asked why, the repairman said so much in the way of covers had to be removed to work on it, that he had to charge that much.

Not only had I had the machine only 14 months but also I was working on only my second full project on it. I have done mostly clothing repairs on it and have not subjected it to heavy or abusive use. I bought the Brother 2600i because I have no need for multiple fancy stitches and this had more than I need. Why is it that a simple machine that does only what I need is also a "cheap machine"? Do I really have to go "big, fancy, expensive, etc", when I don't need much more than simple?

I had only one Kenmore sewing machine for over 20 years. Toward the end I had to have it cleaned more often but needed no other repairs in all that time! I got rid of it when I moved cross country. Big mistake that will soon be rectified. I was so disappointed in this machine I will never buy another Brother machine.

hiya, cheap machines means just that, cheap machines. i do a lot of embroidery and quilting. and i found that to get the best work i had to buy the best machines, cost me loads of money, but they do the job i want. i tried the cheap machines and the first one lasted 2 weeks and bang it was gone. these machines really are for kids to play with and do a little doll dress or something equally as small or rarely used and only then for a hem in net curtains or the like. they don't like thickness at all because they are not built for anything really. you will get the odd one now and again that will do something, and so long as you don't do something very often they are ok. d'you know what i mean. lots of people make the same mistake and think these machines will do lots. they just don't. when you know just exactly what you want to do on the machine, then look for a machine that does that. you might have to pay a couple of bob but to get what you want is the only way to go. i have this from experience. good luck and kind regards helena

Pro: Needle Treader is wizardry. I stopped sewing because I could no longer thread the needle.

Cons: 1) From the factory, the presser foot falls off when you manipulate the fabric. Very irritating.

2) Too lightweight. My dog got her foot caught in the the cord and the whole sewing machine flew off the table. The body cracked but I super glued it together. Continued to function well, though.

3) Mid-project, the timing went out. Now it needs professional repair.

How does it compare to a Singer? The model that I had (don't remember the number)regularly needed repair on the timing. The last time, the repair people told me that they have a steady income because of that Singer.
