Brother CS-6000i

I bought the Brother CS-6000i sewing machine at Walmart. Yes, I know, I shouldn't expect much.

Well, I don't know if I'm just hard on machines (I use it almost daily) or what... but I needed to replace the bobbin case (rotary hook) and could not find parts anywhere!

I spoke to a Brother dealer and she told me that those that are sold at Walmart etc., are not built as well etc., and you can't get replacement parts.

That's why they are so inexpensive. You're expected to go out and buy another!

Well, never again. I'm going to put out some money and get myself something nice.

More Expensive is not necessarily Better
by: Anonymous

Be Careful about going for something nice or more expensive. If you read some of the reviews (especially on Viking), you would spend the money and not get anymore. I should have checked with consumer reports before purchasing. This I normally do but relied on the opinion of a friend. However, what I am finding out after an investment of $1,000 for a Viking (which was near the low end price), that the machines of old have gone to the way side. The newer machines are more complicated and less well made and also, as a result the dealers know this and many have no return policies. Buyer Beware!!!!

Interested in Brother CS6000i
by: J Noone

I am very interested in the Brother CS6000i sewing machine, here in Canada, and am finding this an impossibility.

I have read many mixed reviews and am now wondering if there was a problem with this machine.

I am a hard-die Singer user for over 50 years and do not want to end up with a dud machine.

I would appreciate any feedback from users of this machine, whether good or bad.

I can be reached by e-mail at -

Thank you

My Brother's bobbin winder broke also, help here for problem...
by: Anonymous

My bobbin winder is broken, too, on my Brother CS6200. I went crazy trying to wind a bobbin before I realized it is just broken. Also, the hook on the automatic threader is "gone"...but besides it's problems, it does sew nicely for the most part. I only used it a short time before the bobbin winder broke. I also bought it at Walmart and was sorry to read their machines aren't as good as those sold elsewhere.I wrote an email to Brother for (desperate) help 4 days ago and haven't gotten a reply. A coworker suggested buying a Bobbin Winder. I got one at Michael's last night. It sells for #29.99 but thankfully I had a coupon from the Sunday paper.
It worked great and I would recommend it for you. I can say my Brother is handling heavy fabric. I am sewing a Halloween costume for my neice and the fabric in challenging! Only thing, the pressor foot is having trouble suddenly staying up. Could be a strain from the fabric.

This is the first machine that has not worked for me. I've exchanged it and tried a new one of the same model and it just jams and does not sew consistently or at a decent rate.

Bobbin case is poorly designed
by: Hellena Hanbasquet

My sister bought one, and loved it so she told me to buy one. The problem was she had only had it a few weeks and the bugs did not present themselves. The design of the case is poor, nothing locks it into place and both machines ended up out of time within weeks, along with the massive amounts of broken needles and hard to find replacements. You can find them on the internet between 30-50 bucks a pop. We have both had our machines re-timed professionally... 85 bucks a peice, but the timing slips within a short time later and you are back to the start.

Broken needles
by: carol in AZ

After a month of trying this machine, and 7 broken needles later, I returned it. I bought mine at WalMart.com as I have read others say, never once did I think it was because of that. Besides the broken needles, it would lock up at odd times, and it would barely go through 3 or 4 layers of thin material. I can't imagine it would go through anything heavy. I liked a lot of the features it had, and was very dissapointed when it didn't work. I sew everyday, and now have returned to my old models. I am interested in purchasing another machine, but on a budget I can't go overboard, and I can't keep buying ones that don't perform. Any ideas can be forwarded to cacastillo5@yahoo.com. Thanks.

Brother CS 6000i
by: Trisha

I was about to purchase the Brother CS 6000i, as 3 yrs ago, I had known 2 quilters who absolutely loved theirs, did great piecing & freemotion quilting. I have since moved, so I don't know if they still have them.

But recently I've talked to 2 sewing machine dealers who said the Brother CS 6000i works great for 2 - 14 months, then it dies & is full of plastic parts that cannot be repaired, so it must be thrown away! One said her daughter went over a thick seam hump & it threw out the tension & ruined it. I cannot afford more than $150 for a sewing machine & I had my heart set on this--now I'm not sure. I'd be happy with a mechanical machine but want one that is $150 or less, does zig zag & blanket stitch and is going to last a few years & will do free-motion quilting--does such a thing exist?

I see what I want in $400 Janome models or Bernina $800 models--is there anything in my price range? Has anyone used the Brother CS 6000i for more than a year?

Bobbin race threading problem on two machines.
by: Anonymous

I have two CS-6000i machines that both have problems with the bobbin race. Both were purchased in 2006. I was able to make three fleece jackets, a heavily ornate native american regailia, simple curtains, a couple of skirts and some mending. That is all of the use I have gotten out of both machines combined, prior to their bobbin race problem developing.

I bought 4 bobbin case replacements and none of them helped. The needle still hits the bobbin case and the thread still wraps across the diameter of the bobbin race instead of around the circumference. The internal parts are plastic.
We need a quality american sewing machine company whose owners have the integrity to put the best interest of our country very high on their list of priorities and will create the highest quality, affordable and economical machines in the world.

In the mean time, I suggest buying one of those old machines that were made before they quit making them like they used to. Fortunatly, I did inherit such a machine last year from my precious mom-in-love.

Brother CS 6000i
by: V Older

Unfortunately I hadn't read all the reviews about the Brother CS6000i sewing machine but after having problems with the bobbin housing I checked and found it is a common problem. And now I have the same problem.

I was learning to use the machine, going step by step. I was practicing on plain muslin cotton. Sudden noise and chaos. Bent needle and bobbin housing had popped out. I finally got it back in but now the top thread can't pick it up, just keeps jamming in the mechanism.

I'm hoping for a satisfying result from tech support, but judging from the other Amazon negative reviews, I have a bad machine and I'm out the money it cost me. I've already recycled the original box.

My mothers Singer machine is probably still in operation in the home of the wise person who purchased it at the estate sale in 1975.

I'm regretting the urge to begin sewing again. Even Singer current reviews are indicating problems.

Piece of advice I can offer is to purchase a machine from a dealer. Pay the premium just to have a person to see if something goes wrong. That's my next step. During the 45 minutes the Brother CS 6000i machine worked excited my desire to sew again so I'm determined to find a reliable sewing machine. Time to hit the dealers I guess.

Works for me!!

I bought my Brother CS-6000i 18 months ago so I could make some drapes. It has been fantastic. I've also made many other items and have had no trouble. Planning on buying one for my daughter for Christmas.

Love my CS6000i
by: Anonymous

I have owned my brother CS6000i sewing machine for about 4 years now and I use it regularly without problems, I don't use it daily but I do use it at least 3 times a month for major projects like curtains, clothes, diapers etc. I just recently lost the internal bobbin holder (I'm not sure of its name but it is the part of the bobbin holder that pops in and out and actually holds the bobbin in place) so my sewing has been put on hold until I can either find a replacement or find the original ( I have three small kids and when I took it out to clean quilt batting from inside the bobbin area they decided to run away with the part). Does anyone know if I can replace that part or if I am just going to have to buy a new machine? This has been the best sewing machine I have ever owned and I hate to have to find a new one!

The Good and the Bad
by: Pam

First, don't get this if you plan on quilting with appliques that you want to use a plain satin stitch around-this machine doesn't have it. Yes, it have decorative satin stitches but not ordinary one used for appliques. (It does have a blanket stitch which is nice but that doesn't always work in the design or look as nice).
I have done free-motion quilting with this and it does pretty good. Also I like the fact that the needle stops in the 'down' position and before you start to sew, a touch of a button will also lower the needle (no more cranking the hand wheel). Threaded the bobbin is very easy as you just push that 'needle-down' button so that's pretty easy.
I would never have bought this is I had known it didn't have the plain satin stitch for what I needed but it does sew nice (better than that cheap Singer I had which was awful!! That one was the $99 one at Wal-Mart. I guess you get what you pay for and it broke after very little use).
If you don't need the satin stitch, this isn't a bad machine. I haven't used the automatic button holers but they are there.
