Brother NX250 sewing machine

by Christine
(Taft, California)

Maybe I got a lemon. I bought the Brother NX250 sewing machine 2 years ago because it was highly rated and I just wanted a new machine. In the first year it was in the repair shop 5X for jams and other computer "errors" that I couldn't clear. The repair man said it should be serviced after every 8 hours of sewing.

I sew 2-3 times that much every week so I just put it in the closet and haven't used it since. I bought a used Bernina 707 last year and it too has been workhorse and trouble-free.

I sewed 45 years on a Singer machine I bought in Germany in 1963. It never had a problem I couldn't clear up myself.

The problem with the computerized Brother NX250 machine apparently is that once the error message comes on, you're dead in the water. It's next to impossible to find a solution without taking it in for service. In my case that's an 80 mile round trip and a minimum $75.00 charge once the warranty expired. Never again!!

I am inclined to get a Bernina since the 234 one I've got has never been in the shop! I like to know what not to buy!

What a shame!
by: RL Schaefer

It's too bad that it appears that too much time has passed to get your money back. What a shame. A machine that requires servicing every 8 hours? That is so ridiculous.
Sadly, we're noticing lately even the higher end newer models are coming out with more glitches. Guess the more computerized a machine gets the more headaches can crop up.
I'm seriously looking at getting an older, well maintained, manual machine for most of my regular sewing. There are several brands that have been recommended and one that I still may consider is the Bernina 930. Just finding one within a reasonable price that has been maintained is going to be the trick!
Thanks for giving the heads up on the "Oh" Brother machine and sorry it was so awful for you!

I bought the Pacemaker NX400. This morning it froze up and I am unable to even turn it manually. The "Disabled your machine ....." error message came on for no apparent reason. I was sewing along and it started grumblimg when I released the foot pedal. Then it froze. I rethreaded and reset the bobbin to no avail. I have been having problems in the bobbin area but thought it was fixed when I rewound the bobbin. But no. It's very frustrating in the middle of a quilt to have your machine freeze up like that. I bought a Singer 401A in 1960 amd never had it in the shop until the last year, when I bought my Brother NX400. I kept my Singer meticulously oiled and cleaned. I treated it well and gave me back good results. I have only had the Brother a few years and have lots of complaints. For instance there is no light on the sewing area. Big problem to me. The lift arm is on the right side. I am right handed and want to hold the fabric when lifting the foot at times. Big problem for me. Reliability is the big one though and I haven't found it in the NX400.

I purchased the ULT2002D in 2001 at four yrs. the board had to be replaced. Last yr in June it went out again and the so called authorized service dealer told me he didn' know what was wrong with it come and get it and send to factory. I called the number they gave me and was told they didn't want it. After nine months now they tell they will sell me the board for $427.00 or send it to them, my thoughts on this are that a $6,000.00 machine should not be this much trouble. The service center was rude and I was told by the factory of three other locations to take to which are 8o miles from me or 120 miles

I had mine for less than a year when the "saftey device activated" Could not do a thing with it. took it back to shop, and they lost it, so replaced with abrand new one. I would never get another one. this one also now sounds as though its not running as smoothly, and has jammed up a couple of times with the bobbin. As for being serviced every 8 hours sewing! That is absurd! I had a very basic Jones model for 22 years and had never even oiled it. I wanted a newer flasher machine, but I dont think its worth the money! its really frustrating when you want to get sewing done. And all Im doing is sewing some cushions for my daughters classroom, not like I have it going every day or anything. Grrr!

I had a Sears Sewing Machine since 1967. In 2009 it stopped working. I bought a Brothers machine in
Dec 2009 and it's broke. Don't buy one.
