by Robin
(Colorado)

I've been sewing for 37 years and the Brother XR-7700 is the best sewing machine I've ever used!!

I make purses, which I sell, and I LOVE this machine. So much so that I am looking to buy another one!!

It is sad to say but since the day I have used this machine it has been nothing but trouble. I have purchase new bobbins the correct stock number new needles again that jive with this machine and all this has not helped it jams up with in seconds of using it. Unfortuately I did not start to use it immediately it was almost a year before I started or I would have returned it to Costco where it was purchased. I am so dissappointed in this machine wish I had stuck to tried and true Singers.

What a Shame!
by: Anonymous

Why don't you try contacting Brother about the lemon you've got? Perhaps they will care about their reputation enough to replace it. (or perhaps I live in a fantasy world?!)

Wishing you good success!

Machine Jam
by: Anonymous

If your machine is constantly jamming it might be the bobbin case. If the case becomes banged up the machine witll jam and it is a total mess. I am having the same problem, and it is tough to locate a new bobbin case!

Problems with my XR7700
by: Sue

I have had more problems with this machine then needed. I am stuck with it now.

I find that my thread hangs up and breaks all the time and the needle threader will not catch to thread the needle.

The Brother XR-7700 is more a beginner machine
by: Anonymous

Bought the Brother XR-7700 sewing machine about 18 months ago. I'm an intermediate level sewer. I use it for various projects (crafts, clothing, etc) and it does just OK.

Pros:
Inexpensive
Lots of features for the price
Comes with several presser feet & quilting table
Speed control
Up/Down automatic stop
Lots of stitches

Cons:
Does not do well on thick fabrics or several layers
Doesn't feed nearly as smoothly as some of the nicer machines I've used (to be expected I think)
Feed dogs aren't adjustable
Poorly written manual

And my main gripe-- the needle is placed quite far underneath the sewing machine which makes it hard to see without hunching down when doing things like embroidery or applique (kind of funny since this machine is supposed to 'cater' towards quilters)

Overall I might recommend it to someone who is just a casual machine user or a beginner or working on fairly lightweight fabrics like broadcloth exclusively. I think most sewers with some experience & more versatile needs will find aspects frustrating enough that it will be worthwhile putting your money elsewhere.

Love my XR-7700
by: Christine Fisher

I just purchased a Brother XR7700 sewing machine from the Costco website and I love it. It was so easy to set up and operate.

I have not yet tried to sew anything heavy but I am am confident that it will meet all of my sewing needs. It is so easy to use.

I do agree that the operations manual in poorly written and somewhat confusing, primarily because it covers different machines. Even still, I recommend it highly.

Brother XR7700
by: Jan

The Brother XR7700 is a great sewing machine -- sometimes I wonder why I have my Bernina 440QE because this has many of the feature that the Bernina has. Anyone who loves to sew will love this machine.

I have used my sister's when visiting and literally began sewing without any instruction. Easy to use. I am going to buy myself one so that I can have it to take to classes and community sewing.

UPDATE BY ROBIN in Colorado
by: Robin

Well, since writing my review, my machine is dead!

The person who wrote about all the problems with the bobbin and breaking thread, ect., I HEAR YOU!

Mine had a total meltdown, and since my machine is no longer in warranty (forget that 25 year warranty thing...I don't know what it applies to, but the repair shop let me know that I will have to pay for any and all repairs to my machine) so, I have to pay a $50 bench fee just to see what it would cost to fix it. And, since I paid only about $150 for it, it's probably not worth it.

My story gets sadder...since that machine died, I went online and read review after review of sewing machines, and found that the Brother PC420 has fantastic reviews, so, even though my last Brother is screwed up, I decided to plunk down the $500 dollars and buy a GOOD machine.
6 weeks into owning that one, it decided it preferred sewing BACKWARDS to sewing as it should! I called HSN.com where I bought it and was told that since it's more than 30 days old, they won't replace it.
They gave me a number to call Brother customer service and that led to an hour's worth of wild goose chase trying to find the right dept. to help me. Don't bother calling them, just go on their website and find the AUTHORIZED Brother repair center nearest you.
So, my new machine is in the shop and I was told it could be 3 weeks before it's ready. I don't WANT a fixed, or worse yet, refurbished machine, when it's less than 2 months old, I want a NEW machine! The reviews on that machine are great, I guess I got a lemon!!
Buyer beware!

Brother XR-7700
by: Danielle

this is the first machine I ever purchased, as well. I love the quilting features and have finished my very first quilt. Does get a little finicky if your needle gets dull and/ or you are using old thread.

Other than that, I am happy to say I am on my way to completing my second quilt. Cannot wait to explore all the fun features the Brother XR-7700 includes.

Great machine!
by: Nancy

This is my first sewing machine, and I love it! I found it very easy to set up, with a manual that is very clear, and started sewing immediately! I got it from Costco, and love all of the extras, as well as the DVD that explains basic function. So far, I've made several zip pouches, double sided napkins, and a drawstring bag, and I'm about to start my first quilt and a variety of other projects, including some clothes. I really love it!

Nothing But Trouble
by: Anonymous

This message is intended for the purchaser who found this machine to be nothing but trouble. Most sewing machines come lubricated from the factory and most need periodic lubricating based on usage. By the time she first used it, it may have needed re-lubricating and surely the manual addresses care and maintenance. Every machine I've owned (all different manufacturers) experienced the problem she outlined when the machine required lubrication. I don't own this machine, but based on other reviews, I'm seriously considering it.

Brother xr7700

Unfortunately I have struggled with this machine from the day I got it for my birthday. My mother's 60 year old singer finally burnt out its motor and I have to say compared to this one it was a smooth sailing machine hardly ever a problem.

Where as with this Brother xr7700 I break needles bend needles stitches are binding up together just one thing after another. Just when I have got it running smoothly and I am on my way I have a bump in the road and something goes wrong. I was ready to throw it out the other day... I'm thinking going cheap wasn't the way to go. I know part of it could me me but... I don't think all of my problems are my cause.

I TAKE IT BACK
by: Robin

I wrote the 1st time and raved about loving the machine. Then I wrote and said the machine died. Both true...BUT, I found out that I was the cause of the motherboard crapping out on the machine! I was doing something that I shouldn't have done while sewing a particular part of my purses...forcing the machine to do something it wasn't made to do.

Thankfully, Brother's warranty paid for the motherboard replacement and I am still lovin' my machine!

Moral: Don't force your computerized machine to sew in a manner that it wasn't created to do!

This is a great machine and I highly recommend it!~
