Embroidery Sewing Machine Reviews And Designs

Embroidery machines are either manual or computerized sewing machines that can create numerous complicated patterns and designs used for making different styles of embroidery projects.

Most embroidery sewing machines used by crafters, quilters, and seamstresses today are driven by computers because of their precision and convenience.

Although there are still some who use the manual type of embroidery machine nowadays, these units are used mainly for fiber art and quilting projects only.

Many crafters and fabric artists also still use the manual type for embellishing garments, but as computer-driven embroidery and sewing machines are now becoming more affordable, most of them have switched to the computerized free machine embroidery process to create embellishments on items or to create textile art.

Embroideries using embroidery sewing machines are actually described in two different actions.

1. Embroidery is made with the use of a sewing machine to manually create a design on the fabric by using either the freehand or with the built-in stitches in the machine.

2. Embroidery is created with the use of computerized embroidery machines where the designs are pre-made in a special software program that holds several digitized embroidery designs that can be automatically read and embroidered right unto the fabric by the machine.

While some machines are for embroidery only, others are a combination of embroidery and sewing. There are embroidery and sewing machine manufacturers that produce large scale commercial models.

Others are designed for home or small business use and more advanced features are becoming more available these days. These features include:
  • Large color touch screen
  • USB interface
  • Design editing software on the machine
  • Embroidery advisor software
  • Design files storage systems

Embroidery Supplies

Machine embroidery commonly uses Rayon, polyester, metallic embroidery threads, and other thread types that are available in the market today. The thread quality used can greatly affect the flow of your embroidery work and most professional sergers recommend the polyester thread because it is color safe and durable.

The most commonly used embroidery thread weight is 40wt, but for bobbins it is usually either 60wt or 90wt thread. Embroidery sewing machines have no problem stitching different types of threads on any kind of fabric as long as the fabric is supported with proper stabilizers.

Without the stabilizers, the fabrics, especially the delicate ones, tend to crimp, thus ruining both the design and the fabric. Other supplies for embroidery machines are as follows:

1. Purchased designs
2. Needles
3. Bobbin
4. Other miscellaneous tools and supplies

Embroidery Software

Machines nowadays can be integrated with computers to help make embroideries easier. There are so many software choices you can find or buy either from your dealer or from websites that offer tools that allow you to customize stock designs without having to buy the expensive digitizing software.

These software can print, edit, organize, split, or convert embroidery designs for your convenience. If you only need a handful of these designs, then you can have it tailored so that you will pay only for those features you need.

Basic Steps for Creating Designs

If you want to use a software to create a design, here are some easy steps on how to go about it.

1. Purchase or create a digitized embroidery design file.
2. Edit the design and/or combine with other designs (optional).
3. Load the final design file into the embroidery machine.
4. Stabilize the fabric and place it in the machine.
5. Start and monitor the embroidery machine.

It is wise to take note that there are many brands that use different formats. When downloading or purchasing embroidery designs, make sure that you know the format used by your machine.

If the format used by the designs is not available on your machine, then you can have it converted from one stitch file format to another stitch file format. Some of the popularly used design software on the market today are: Wings' XP Embroidery Design Software, Digital Image Stitch Creator or D.I.S.C., Design Shop by Melco and Wilcom ES.
