Hand Held Sewing Machine
Pros And Cons Of Hand Models

A hand held sewing machine comes handy when you are constantly traveling or when you don't have enough space to place a standard-size sewing equipment.

Majority of hand sewing machines are lightweight and thus very easy to carry around.

They are made of lighter materials, such as plastic and typically weigh 20 pounds or less.

When it comes to built-in features, they range from simple to complex, depending if you're having a mechanical or a computerized hand held sewing machine.

Pros

1. It's a portable machine.
This is one of the main reasons why it's a good idea to have a hand sewing machine. It doesn't matter where you are-in your home, office, school, or even in the park-you can safely and conveniently tuck the sewing machine in a bag and you're already good to go.

If you're always on the road, you can do immediate mending, darning, and adjusting of your clothes easily when you have this kind of sewing equipment.

2. It's affordable.
A lot of hand held sewing machines are so easy on the pocket. They cost you a few hundred dollars to below, the former already containing essential and optional features.

If you are on a shoe-string budget, this is the kind of machine that you need to acquire for now until you have saved enough for a standard-size and more complicated sewing machine.

3. The hand sewing machines are very easy to operate.
Hand held models are often used to teach kids their first steps in the sewing world. They contain all the fundamental functions you need for a sewing equipment.

Of course, since they are small, you won't have any trouble maintaining them. Most of all, you can save on electricity, as you can run them with just the use of batteries.

Cons

1. They don't hold enough for too long.
A hand sewing machine is very affordable, but not meant to be used for very long periods. This is completely opposite from standard sewing equipment, which can last for several years, even decades. When you have a hand held sewing equipment, you have to think of purchasing another one when time and money allow you.

2. You cannot work on thick fabrics.
Normally, hand held sewing machines can be excellent for simple sewing projects and needs. You can also do basic embroidery, but you may be having a difficult time with quilting.

The equipment does not have the capability to work on thick and multiple layers of fabrics, such as denim and garment leather. When you force it, the needles will eventually break, the thread will start to jam, and the machine will eventually go haywire and gets damaged.

The hand held sewing machine is a good buy for those who are saving or are starting out in sewing. At these areas, it will never fail you. But if you're really serious about the craft, it's better to search for regular sewing machines.
