Cover I made for my new Viking Sapphire 830

Anyway, I've had my Husqvarna Viking Sapphire 830 for a month and really love this sewing machine. I've completed a quilt with free motion quilting, appliqued, made fabric labels combining my name and stitch designs using the programmable feature.

My first project was a quilted, appliqued cover for my new machine. I've included a photo. I really advise everyone to take the offered classes. In my case, it solved the problem I was having with free motion quilting and getting the applique stitches to look right.

My Viking Sapphire 830 sews so smoothly. At least once I got used to paying attention to the instruction screen advising me what size needle to use, tension, etc. The only issue I have is the thread occasionally comes off the upper guide. And, the little case that holds the bobbins and extra feet is a bit inconvenient to get at.

Would I recommend it? Yes but I think part of my satisfaction is the dealer I bought it from who is so helpful.

Viking Sapphire 830
by: Anonymous

I have had the Viking Sapphire 830 sweing machine for about 8 months. It took several months to get used to the machine and the "nesting" that happened frequently.

It turns out that the thread that goes through the hook that feeds into the needle has a habit of jumping out of the hook and then the thread nests underneath the fabric. The more familiar I became with the machine, the less frequent this problem occurred but it still happened from time to time.

Until this weekend when it happened over and over, every two or three stitches. I would have to stop, clip the threads under the fabric, rethread the machine and begin again. After about 45 minutes of this I had to stop or I would have thrown the machine through the window! The ladies at the Viking store keep telling me to be patient and try to alter the way that I sew!!!

After having used the Viking Sapphire 830 machine this long I am convinced that this is not my problem but a design problem of the machine. If the hook had a hole to feed the thread through rather than an open end then the thread wouldn't be able to jump out.

I wouldn't recommend this machine until this problem is resolved.

Viking Sapphire 530 thread problem
by: Judy

Yes, the upper thread is a problem. It doesn't happen to me very often, but it does seem to be increasing. I did find that if I let the thread "snap" back after cutting it, it was more apt to come off the upper thread tension.
My dealer is a very good one. I mentioned it to him (Rick at Boomers in Bellingham, WA)and he has a fix for it. All I have to do is take it in and he'll fix it. I just haven't gotten around to it yet.
Good luck. If you don't have a good dealer, it may be an issue.
After nearly 4 months of continuous and heavy use sewing (quilting, applique etc) I still love my Viking.

Tension Guide problem
by: Anonymous

I've been using my 830 without any problems but needed to rethread recently and discovered the tension guide seems to be broken or loose. Anyone have any advice or information about that?

Problems with machine
by: Anonymous

I bought a Sapphire 830 at the Sister's Quilt show and I am having nothing but trouble with it. I am trying right now to use it to free motion quilt, and I have thread breaking about every few seconds of sewing. I have taken apart the bobbin; cleaned it out; rethreaded the maching; over and over, and still....thread breaking. I would like to trade this machine in or sell it. Any suggestions?

problems
by: Judy

What a bummer to get a new machine and have problems. Since you didn't seem to have purchased your Viking from a dealer you probably didn't get to take any new user classes?
I found that was really really important for me. When I got my machine I was so anxious to use it. I glanced at the manual (which isn't all that great by the way) and jumped right in. I had all kinds of issues until I took the two incuded new user classes my dealer provided. What a huge difference. I learned lots of little tricks and how to use the sewing guide screen, correct needles, threading etc. I have found that my machine works better if the thread is in the horizontal position (be sure to put on the little end cap).
Of course, you could have simply gotten a lemon.
I would really suggest you try to find a Viking dealer and take your machine in. Perhaps it needs some simple adjustments. Ask if any new user classes are available.
Good luck.

Update
by: Judy T

I've now had my Viking Sapphire 830 for a bit over a year. I quilt and machine applique constantly so it's gotten a good workout. At first I had some issues with the upper thread slipping off the guide. But for some reason that went away and it hasn't slipped off in months.
My machine sews like a dream and I really like it. No regrets. I've made a dozen lap quilts for family that have lots of appliques. I tried felted wool appliques on one project. That I really love. How fun! I did have to go into the dealer because the lower tension just wouldn't come out perfect. He showed me how to make a teeny tiny adjustment to the bobbin case and now it's fine.
While the machine isn't all that heavy compared to my 40 year old Vikin; after back surgery I just couldn't carry it to class. Besides it was a pain to unhook it, pack it up and haul it off with me. So, I bought a small, lightweight machine called a Babylock Audrey. Only 11 pounds. I think it will be great for carrying with to class or in our RV. I'll post a review once I've used it a bit longer.
