Pfaff Expression 2038

by Gretchen
(Needham. MA USA)

I'm NOT satisfied with the Pfaff Expression 2038 sewing machine. I have experienced nothing but frustration since I bought it and it has made sewing something that I rarely do now. I plan to return to the retailer with it.

The thread is constantly getting caught up in the bobbin case below and bending a piece of metal that needs repair after this happens.

I'm not at all happy with having to bring the Pfaff Expression 2038 machine back for repair, so I have just left it to sit and time has gone by.

Lousy Pfaff
by: Sharon

I have to take my Expression 2036 in to be fixed about every two months, and at $80.00 per "repair" it gets expensive!!! It WILL NOT sew a decent seam!!! I have put new needles in (the correct size), rethreaded ad nauseum, tried different brands of thread, cursed at it, you name it, I have tried it. Within two weeks of getting it back from the repairman, it starts to sew poorly, binds up, and makes me crazy!!! I will NEVER EVER HAVE A PFAFF AGAIN AND I DO NOT RECOMMEND A PFAFF TO ANYONE WHO WILL LISTEN! It has had parts replaced that break when it binds up. This was my first purchase of an expensive machine, and now I am scared to buy another, but if I do, it certainly won't be a Pfaff! My 40 year old Singer sews better than this piece of crap!

thread caught in bobbin case pfaff 2038
by: Anonymous

Same problem. It worked for a long time, several years, now the thread gets caught in the bobbin case!! Frustrating. I sew alot and have several pfaff 1222's old machines, no problems! This new stuff is not any good. It is not made in Germany like the old ones were. the needle threader breaks constantly. The tension knob works it's way down unknowlingly to me just through the vibration of the machine. I certainly don't want another NEW pfaff and they aren't CHEAP either. Waste of money if you sew alot they are not any good for constant use. ANother plastic replicant of an original Pfaff. I call it high priced junk.

Pfaff Expression 2038
by: Jewel

I am truly frustrated with this machine. It has been less than what I expected from Pfaff. I have had my Pfaff Expression 2038 for two years and this is the second time I have needed professional repairs done. The major problem is now the stitch length adjustment. IT SIMPLY CANNOT BE ADJUSTED FROM THE LARGEST STITCH. This applies to straight as well as programmable stitches. The authorized repairman is not able to fix it.

Where can I get the correct answers to this problem? Is it common? I had an older Pfaff for 20 years and never had to have a thing done execpt general maintenance. The 2038 leaves a lot to be desired. I will NEVER buy another Pfaff.

Pfaff Expression 2038 - I agree!
by: Gail

I'm afraid it's the same old story. I've had my Pfaff Expressin 2038 for about four years, but, unfortunately, didn't find a machine sewing class until it was out of warranty. It's now "died" for the third time in the two years I've been using it intensively; it's stitching backwards and changing stitch as it goes, which is a major technical fault. I paid £125 to have it repaired in June, when there was another technical fault that meant once again it was at the repair shop for 3 weeks.

I'm giving up on it this time; hoping to part-exchange it for a Bernina. If they won't take it as part-exchange, I will probably take a hammer to it..! It's been a very expensive pain from start to finish, and I also will never be buying from Pfaff again!

Pfaff 2038
by: Nancy B. Waller

I am glad I came across this page because I was seriously considering buying one of these machines on eBay.

These machines are not made in Germany anymore does that tell any of you something. Also, you will notice that the price has not gone down.

Remember NAFTA everything would be so much cheaper. Joke of the century.

THREAD STUCK
by: Anonymous

Great! My machine just jammed up with a piece of thread in the bobbin case. Am I going to have this problem all the time? I just got the stupid thing. My first expensive one, my most frustrating one!

I Heart Pfreebie!
by: Sandy

I have owned my Pfaff Expression 2038, Pfreebie (I won her in a drawing), for two years now. I use it extensively. Beyond the personal and gift sewing that I do, I also work at a quilt shop and make shop samples.
I love my Pfaff. I haven't had any problems. I keep the lint cleaned out and let it take a break if I notice it getting too warm. These machines should be professionally cleaned every year, they do not need to be oiled, and never blow air into them!

Pfaff not up to expectation
by: Carolyn H

Purchased almost 3 years ago. Thought I was a smart buyer. First thing the threader stopped working. My old eyes could have used this feature. Bobbin is difficult to place properly and winds erratically. Reverse feature can be a problem. Tension changes. I've spent too much to just dump it. Sorry I gave away my 20 year old Singer.

Boo hoo to the bobbin case
by: Carol

I too bought an Expression 2038 three years ago and within six months the thread was getting caught in the bobbin & breaking every few inches - I hadn't even done much sewing with it. I am so very disappointed, it's my first expensive machine.

I thought by replacing the bobbin case it would solve the problem... but is this true? Unfortunately (or fortunately!), work has taken us to France so I'm nowhere near the shop where I bought it and it's difficult (at the moment) to communicate my problem to a Pfaff dealer here...

Can anyone help please??!

Bad News Pfaff
by: mjs

I bought my Pfaff expression 2.0 in October 2010. It has been in the repair shop 3 times for the same problem. The bobbin thread and the top thread tangle and jam up the machine. I will be sewing a seam and it just starts to jam. Once the warranty is up it will cost $80. each time I take it in.

I traded in a two year old Babylock that could not sew the hem in a pair of jeans.

Wish I had seen this review site before I bought either.

PFAFF 2038
by: Virginia

Bought this machine to use for quilting and used it regularly without a problem. The reverse stitch stopped working in June 2011 and then the stitch length could not be altered. I took it in to have it looked at by my local supplier and it is still with him. It is under warranty but he seems to be having problems getting parts. I am just about fed up with the waiting, I have two quilts in progress and two others prepared to start. I don't know what to do next. I am not happy.
