Pfaff Quilt Expression 4.0

Pfaff Quilt Expression 4.0

I love my Pfaff Quilt Expression 4.0 sewing machine! I was sewing with a Babylock which is a fine machine but I was tired of poor stitch quality and not being able to use different weights of thread very well.

You can tell a big quality difference between Babylock And Pfaff. My Pfaff Quilt Expression 4.0 sews like a dream and I love the built in walking foot and the long 10 inch arm. The auto foot lift is so wonderful I can't put it in words.

I have read some negative things about this machine online. I have had no problems with my machine. I do have the 2nd generation Pfaff 4.0. I think most problem was with a faulty takeup lever on the first generation machines and from what I understand they can put the new lock in takeup lever on the older Pfaff 4.0's.

I really love this machine I also love my Pfaff dealer, they were so great in giving me free classes to learn all the great things about this machine. Anyone looking at sewing machines should find the local Pfaff dealer and have a demo.

Her's some help regarding Pfaff expressions 4.0 issues
by: Anonymous

Your issue is not new regarding the Pfaff 4.0 expressions. In fact, if you google Pfaff expressions 4.0, many sites describe their problems with this machine. Also, Pfaff has moved their manufacturing site for expression out of Germany. Which obviously have affected their quality. Just google Pfaff expressions 4.0 and look for sewing review from Caroline pactchwork and other sewing/quilting sites such as Sewingpattern.com or .org ; you have to join but it is free. They describe their issues with this product and many people have responded. Also, send a letter to the CEO, you paid too much money for that machine and you deserve satisfaction especially in this economy.
You many want to contact another dealer who will work with you.
Good Luck!!

thread jam
by: Laurie

I also got the message Remove Thread jam under the stitch plate. There was no thread jam or even fluff. This is a new machine and barely used. I am waiting for a call back from Pfaff. I certainly won't pay for any repairs! Parts or Labour. Don't tell me I got a lemom machine! Till this point, I loved the machine.

Pfaff demonstration
by: Vanessa

I was looking at buying the Quilt Expression 4.0 and thought I should google to see what info came up. To my astonishment I saw too many negatives in this machine and will now not consider it.... The worst thing is that when demonstrated to me by a dealer in Chatswood, NSW, Australia that exact problem of it saying there was a jam in the bobbin happended... probably around 3-4 times before they could continue the demonstration... and there was nothing jamed ! I have had my Pfaff sewing machine for 30 years and have loved it... and have only considered replacing it with a Pfaff... so I will need to look at some of their other models.

Pfaff 4
by: Anonymous

Canadian here, I am on my third Quilt 4 expression machine, second repair and many issues. This is over a 6 month period. I kept getting thread jams especially with free motion quilting, which I got the machine for. My dealer is 40 mintues drive away so that is a bother.
I was probably too patient and should have asked for my money back. I however have not paid anything for service and got some complimentary thread a value of over a $100.
My dealer has been great, working with me and now my only issue is thread breakage, which they are giving me a new thread guide next week. Which I hope will fix it.
I have an old Pfaff that I love and the features on this machine were everyting I wanted.

My Pfaff QE 4.0 works for me
by: Kathy

I have had my Pfaff QE 4.0 for 10 months now and the only problem I had was the thread jumping out of the thread guide when doing free motion.

This was fixed by just simply threading the opposite direction. I love the ability to program the tie off stitches with the scissor cutter, and the hands free system is so great I can no longer do without it. I am try spoiled by this machine.

Nothing but trouble
by: Anonymous

I had the Q.E. 4 and had nothing but problems with it. Despite careful, correct threading the thread repeatedly jumped out of the thread take-up lever resulting in thread bunching on the underside of the fabric and jamming in the bobbin area. In theory the machine sounded like a dream, but the dream turned out to be a nightmare.

Buyer beware !
by: Elizabeth in the UK

Thats what I say, beware! and what an apt name, Pfaff ... what a lot of pfaffing around with the Expressions 4. You'd expect a top notch machine for the price - yeah right ! I absolutely hate it. Perhaps the Dealer had inside info because once he'd got his money, that was that. VSM (UK)Ltd, who are the distributors in the UK, collected it yesterday and I am hoping that I'll get a full refund which will put an end to my nightmare.

Quilt Expression 4.0 Feed Dogs
by: marinebull

Help!
I was having problems with the thread knotting up on the underside of the fabric. I'd had this problem before and rethreading or delinting everything would take care of it. However, today when I put the feed dogs down and turned off the machine so I could do a complete maintenance as described in the manual, the lever that raises the feed dogs decided not to work. Now I can't get the feed dogs back up! Just bought this machine Sept. 16th, less than a month ago. Will be taking it back to the dealer tomorrow.

Remove Thread Jam issue
by: Anonymous

I have found that when you get the message "Remove Thread Jam under Throat Plate" repeatedly, it is the thread cutter that is jammed. It seems to be very sensitive to fuzz and lint. I brush it good with a large natural bristle paint brush. If that doesn't work,I've found that pressing the "Cutter Button" a couple of times will solve the problem. My dealer in Osseo, WI has been very helpful and following her recommendations, I have been having fewer problems with thread jams, broken threads, etc. One issue I have currently is that extra bobbins aren't in stock at my dealers and the bobbins are a different size than previous Pfaff Machines that I've had. I've also ordered a straight stitch throat plate which is great for quilt piecing but it's on "Back Order"! Hope this helps.

but you have to keep the bobbin area clean, which I do. Whenever there is a notice on the machine that I have a thread jam, I have to clean it, especially around the treat cutter. My dealer told me this, and I have never had other problems with the machine. I just love it!

Pfaff machine purchase
by: Joanne

I am searching the web for reviews on sewing machines since I'm planning on purchasing a new one. Thanks for this site. It has really brought to my attention the importance of making sure that I get everything in writing and opened my eyes to the fact that Pfaff apparently doesn't take into consideration the complaints of it's customers. I have a sour taste in my mouth in regards to purchasing a Pfaff after reading the reviews.
Thanks for putting this site up for public view, Joanne

Tempermental
by: Corky

I spend 2/3s of my time quilting/sewing and the other 1/3 getting the machine to function properly. I frequently get wads of thread under the material and the throat plate, the cutter may or may not cut or he needle comes unthreaded. Once the entire bobbin assembly turned and got jammed. The needle down sometimes doesn't function. Often I've found if I rewind the bobbin from one to another it will work for a while. Seldom is a bobbin used to the point where the computer indicates that bobbin thread is running out. I think the bobbin assembly is too light.

My dealer has been very good about listening to my complaints and fixing them although temporarily.

This is the most temperamental machine.

I had the same problem at a quilting retreat. All the women there tried to help me with no success until one of them suggested pushing the"Scissors" button. Which I did and noticed lots of fuzz down inside. While blowing on it, I pushed the button again and solved the problem. Hope this helps.

Pfaff Expression 4.0
by: Lynne

I am most unhappy with the Pfaff Expression 4.0 sewing machine - every single time I attempt to use it, thread jams. Everyone at store where I purchased gives me a completely different reason why and what to do to correct situation - none of which works. I am more than disappointed. It is a large and heavy machine so it is not the easiest to lug back and forth to have techs and sales people give me their opinion.

I Hate My New Pfaff Quilt Expression 4000
by: Evelyn

I've had this machine for about four months, but just started trying to use it tonight. I got one lousy buttonhole out of it before it started acting up. The bobbin is impossible to put in and pull the thread up. I have tried 100x and can't get it. Who ever heard of having to hold the bobbin still while you wind it through some series of God only knows what because I can't figure it out or even see where the thread is supposed to go, despite a lesson from the dealer (about 4 mos. ago, when I first bought it). I am SO FRUSTRATED! Then the feed dog went down and wouldn't come back up, no matter how much I fiddled with the feed dog lever, or tried powering down the machine and then restarting it. My daughter is home from college for the holiday and wants to learn how to sew. After tonight, I think she's really jaded about computerized sewing machines and sewing in general. We spent four hours and totally wasted our time trying to sew a pair or pajama pants for a friend's birthday. ALSO, the user's guide is horrendous -- nothing is clearly or logically laid out.

I think I have a good dealer -- I will find out tomorrow, when I try to take this monster back. I miss my old, old Singer 2010 electronic, which lasted 30 years before it had problems. And the bobbin was so simple to put in! And everything worked just great until it simply wore out. And you could actually understand the user manual. Now I feel like a stupid idiot for all the $$$ I paid for this piece of crap.

UGGGHGHGHGHG...........I am SO ANGRY at myself and Pfaff!!

free motion/sensormatic concerns
by: Deb

I purchased the Quilt Expressions 4.0 for the sensormatic feature and have had nothing but trouble. I can free motion quilt about 2 inches before the thread breaks, skips or becomes unthreaded. My dealer was nice and sent the machine to have the timing repaired (no cost to me) but it didn't solve the problem. I was using a high loft batting and that may have caused some issue but let me tell you. I got out the old Husky Viking and finished my quilt. Thank goodness I kept it around. I would love to use my Pfaff 4.0 to free motion but am unable to figure out why it won't work properly. Any advise appreciated

Same error
by: Anonymous

I just purchased my PFAFF Quilt Expressions 4.0 just before Christmas 2009. It is now Feb. 2010, and as I was in the hospital for a month, I have only used my machine light 3 times. I also have just got the error "remove thread jam under the stitch plate", and there are no threads or anything under the stitch plate!! This is not boding well for future sewing. I phoned the place where I bought it and they are contacting pfaff (although they did comment they had this problem before with someone else), but for me not to expect a quick answer. Reading your reply that something needs to be repaired does not make me feel very good about my purchase as this is a brand new machine. What I did just before this occurred was select all the tie off options - I wondered if there was some sort of bug there in the machine that messed something up. Here is hoping I do not lose my machine for a few weeks as I am right in the middle of a project and it won't make me recommend this machine to anyone else.

Thank you Nov 14, 2009!
by: Anonymous

I just posted a message before this saying my machine was having that tread jam error (bought my machine just before Christmas 2009), and then I read down the comments and saw the Nov 14, 2009 comment that said to just push the cutter button a couple of times (after making sure no lint/thread in the cutter, which there was not), and my machine started working again! A BIG THANK YOU to this person for posting that as after I called back the place I bought it they told me they had sent away another ladies machine because of this error, and I am glad that did not happen to me! I told them how to fix it and told them they should inform the other people who have bought the machine, just in case this happens to them in the middle of a project. Now, after reading this page it makes me a little nervous to keep the machine, but then others say they love it and have not had any problems, so here is hoping this is the only problem I have as I love all the other features. I do have friends who bought high dollar janome machines and have had a lot worse problems in the first couple of months and more of getting their machines, which is why I bought this pfaff instead of one of those.

Been in for your lessons?
by: Anonymous

I have an expression 4.0 and had a few problems at first, never having had a drop in bobbin (which are more sensitive than the rotary, a former Pfaff trademark). I went for my free lessons at my dealer and she showed me lots of tips: proper needles and threads (did you know quilters should never use universal needles?), single hole needle plate for straight stitching, especially piecing triangles (also had this on my old machine), when the thread jam is out, hit the scissors button to clear the cutter out of the way, etc. My problems are solved and I love my machine! Unfortunately, it sounds like some of you purchased your machine from people who sell machines, not from people who actually are experience sew-ers! I guess I am lucky!

looking for a new machine
by: dogluva

Thanks for all the helpful posts. I have been researching new machines. My local dealer informed me that Pfaffs are now being made in Shanghiai. The Expressions are a redesign. I am considering going with the older Performance line. The motor sounded more solid to me and I'm hoping it won't have all the issues of the Expression line, or possibly cough up the extra dough for a Bernina.

Pfaff 4.0 Issues
by: Anonymous

I too have had problems with the Pfaff Quilters Expression 4.0. I discussed these issues with my dealer and he replaced several things. I too had problems with free motion quilting...the machine actually would sew for a while and all of the sudden it would just shred my thread. It actually seemed to keep the core of the thread and push the outside portion of the thread up..hard to explain. Well I did get the machine back and I was able to free motion an entire baby quilt without any issues. What I have found out is this machine is EXTREMELY sensitive on how it is threaded and it will make the most horrible noise in the bobbin area. I am keeping my fingers crossed that everything is now fixed...this machine has great features. Thanks for giving me some pointers and I will try some of them as well.

great machine
by: Anonymous

I love this machine. Works great, not many problems. The only problem I had was when joining squares the machine ate the fabric right at the beginning of the seam. I talked to my dealer and she said just take a piece of paper and lay it under the fabric at the beginning and start sewing on the paper then into the fabric. Problem solved. She told me that to prevent it without paper you have to start stitching one stitch into the fabric not right on the edge.

I just finished a quilt using this machine and everything went great.

So disappointed
by: Anonymous

I have owned a Pfaff Creative 7550 for about 15 years and never had any problems with it, absolutely love it, and thought Pfaffs were great. I bought the Quilt Expression 4.0 because I wanted some of the new features and the larger area. I have become so frustrated with it that I'm wanting to throw it across the room. Problems with the thread jamming, and forget trying to sew using quilting thread. I have gone from swearing by Pfaff to swearing at Pfaff. They were so tricky saying it is German design - I did not realize till after buying that it was made in China, and it shows. If you are considering it, do not buy this machine - you will spend more time re-threading and fixing problems than sewing. A sewing machine should not be this much trouble. The worst part is not just what a lemon this machine is, but the fact that there is no longer a Pfaff company with sturdy long-lasting machines out there.

The worst purchase I have made
by: Anonymous

I have already posted to this forum but in reply to more recent posts .....trouble is that once the dealer has your money its very unlikely that they'll refund and if you were to resell, you'll never get back what you paid for it. What is so annoying is that for the money paid one would expect a tip top machine. My delimma is, do I cut my losses and trade it in for something more reliable ? If you had your choice, which would you recommend.

Kind wishes.

Pfaff Problems
by: Anonymous

I bought my machine about 18 months ago and had no problems until I started using free motion. Two visits to the dealer, who actually knows how to sew very well, and all issues resolved. When you put the feed dogs down - they go down ok. When you move the switch for them to come back up they don't until you start to sew and then they move back up. The thread jumping out can be solved by a quick repair to the take up lever and skipping stitches is to do with the pivot height - why did they not have an instructional dvd with this.

Worst customer service
by: Vicki

I agree about Pfaff's customer service. I've never had such a bad experience as trying to find out why my machine can't do a buttonhole that doesn't look like a candy cane. After a half hour of utterly frustrating nonsense from the customer service person, and her hanging up on me, she told me that she couldn't help me because she didn't have the manual. I did have the manual and it doesn't help with the problem, which was why I called customer service.

Like the original poster, I also don't have e a close dealer. One is listed in my area but she doesn't even want to carry Pfaffs anymore because she says they are junk.

So while my Pfaff QE 2048 sews beautifully, I use my Brother QC 1000 for buttonholes, which it does beautifully.

I will never buy another Pfaff because of their customer service.

Problems with Take up lever
by: Blueberry blues

I have had so many problems with thread jams because the thread comes out of the take up lever. I was told that Pfaff was sending out a fix for it, but my dealer will only install it for "free" when I purchase an overhaul for $79, which I did a month ago (to fix the needle threader) I don't feel I should have to pay for another overhaul just to get something fixed on my new machine. I tried using metallic thread and after several different needles, and adjusting tension, I could not get it to work. I then went to my 10 year old Bernina that my daughter uses to sew canvas horse bags, etc. i changed the needle loosened the tension on the Bernina and sewed for over an hour without the thread breaking. You would think a Pfaff would be able to do the same

Well, well !
by: Anonymous

since purchasing my machine in June 2009 I have continually battled with various problems - first it was the bobbin that overfilled and the needle arm continued up and down as if sewing - apparently it was a contact that wasnt making connection and also the machine, when checked prior to dispatch hadnt been oiled.

Then the veering off to the right was sorted by using another foot - information I gleened from a forum on Yahoo called Quilt Expressions 4. I am still not confident that it sorted the problem.

After realising that my threader was broken and which the distributor VSM Group UK replaced and promptly told me that the machine was now 100%. I baulked at the thought of using my machine again until recently when I decided to give it one last go ....before taking a loss and selling it on ....

Blow me down, the thread started jamming and snagging and the thread kept dis-engaging itself from the take up lever .... so I phoned VSM and was told that their only technical support officer was away doing a show and would be back in a week !!! I asked if there was anyone else who could help and was informed "No". I eventually managed to contact her. Immediately I said about the thread jamming, snagging and unthreading itself from the take up lever she knew exactly what I wass talking about and said that she knew the take up lever was faulty - some machines were lucky in that they didnt experience this problems others not so lucky. She said that the machine would have to come in and new parts installed.

Well, I wonder how many Expressions owners out there are unaware of the design fault ...I thought I was short of going to the looney bin ! I also find it appauling that Pfaff didnt issue a recall !

To Edmonds, UK ....I suggest you contact VSM and speak to Sheila.

To the other lady who said she had to purchase some pack before they replaced her take up thread up ....you shouldnt have had to pay one penny !!! - the distributors should have told the dealers that these parts on the machine are faulty.

Would NOT do it again
by: Anonymous

I purchased my 4.0 at the Houston Quilt Show last October. The local dealer provided hundreds of machines for classes and then sold them at a supposed discount. The salesperson for the local dealer, McDougal's, told me that the machine came with all the original warranty. That wasn't exactly true and was entirely misleading. Within just a few hours, I was having trouble with the thread cutter and soon after, thread jams. I called the Houston dealer and was told that I could either send the machine to them in Houston (shipping at my cost) and there would be no labor cost OR I could go to a dealer near my home but all costs would be my own. Seriously? I ended up paying $127 to my local dealer to get the machine repaired - with less than 20 hours on the machine. I wrote 3 times to Pfaff headquarters. They were of no help at all. This is my first and last Pfaff. I have heard so many good things in the past about the company am not only disappointed but angry. Two lessons - never buy PFAFF and never, ever buy a machine at a quilt show. Buy local.

Surely you are covered under 'The Consumer Rights Act' - perhaps you should investigate this matter. I exercised my rights when I had problems with my Brother PR600, which was a demo model and went fault within 3 months of purchasing it. The Dealer, under that Act, had no option to fix at their expense or refund. They fixed and all is well.

All 'new' products have a manufacturers warranty as well. I know my machine has a 5 years warranty on the proviso that it is serviced yearly by an accredited agent. I think the person who sold you the machine is trying a fast one !

I would persist with Pfaff - if you dont get help writing then phone ! ....and continue to do so ....until they do something !!!

Pfaff here in the UK know me well ! - in fact my machine is with them again, for the third time (all the complaint you have now, I have had - now its the thread take up lever which is faulty) .....and they collect and deliver without charge to me !

I would also agree, never again, and having said that I intend selling my machine on as soon as I can or trade it in, regardless of the monetary loss !

Had a lemon
by: Anonymous

I had lots of problems with thread breakage and knots under the feed dogs. Forget about trying to free motion.....that was impossible and sooo frustrating. I lost track of the times I took it back to the store for advice. Of course it wouldn't jam at the store. I finally convinced them that there was a problem. It was sent for repair. It came back with the same issues and making strange noises. I videoed the machine and took it and the machine BACK to the store. They were very nice and called the repair shop and found out there were timing issues. I asked for a new machine or money back. I got a new machine and it has been a dream. I think if you find one problem with this machine new.... It's a LEMON and try to get your money back or a new machine.

Thanks to Quilt Something, Moscow, ID for all the help!

What you describe is a design fault. Here in the UK they have admitted that there is a problem with the Thread Take Up - it isnt you ! .......persist ! - I did and it paid off.

If necessary, establish who the distributor is (not dealer) and go to the top !!!!

Its also good to bring up, in conversation with them of all the bad feedback Pfaff are getting - refer to the forums etc. that you have visited - they dont like that !

Unfortunately, the courier dropped my machine when it was returned from the workshop and now I am getting a brand new one personally delivered by their own representative.

an overlooked issue
by: Roberto

I have previously commented on both the Viking and Bernina sites in the hope of getting the word out.

These magical machines are computers that sew. They need to be plugged into power conditioning surge protectors, lime you would buy in an electronics specialty retailer. Monster is a well known brand. The servo motors and circuit boards are very sensitive to spikes and static in the current flow. The machines are manufactured under temperature and humidity controlled conditions and tested with clean, smooth current. The most frustrating part is the dealers are so ignorant they do not know to inform the customer, even though their demo machines are plugged in the device I am describing.

The cost of a high quality power conditioning surge protector is small compared to the cost of the machine, endless trips to the dealer, and blood pressure raising confrontations. You can take a second, third or fourth machine home only to experience the same issues. The dealer finds nothing wrong because they are using a computer grade surge protector. They think its you and you think you are cursed, or all the machines are junk. Try the correct protector.

Pfaff Expression
by: Sewing Tech 31 years

I am a sewing machine tech for a large retail sewing machine outlet and know quite a bit about the Pfaff Expressions. Yes there were many issues in the initial stages of these machines but they really are an excellent machine. All issues have been dealt with by Pfaff. Yes it has taken some time but they have addressed all issues. The main issue is making a horizontal full rotary hook system with a 9mm width. This has been a challenge but if all system settings are correctly set these machines will sew like a dream. Here are a list of issues and there corrections.
1.Take up lever. New update for them and now machines are coming with new take up.
2.Neeedle threader. New style coming on machines now. Works excellent.
3.Thread cutter. Thread cutters have been known not to go back into start position. Simple adjustment by a tech to realign the sensor.
(thread build up under normal use can cause thread not to be cut. Using too heavy of thread.
4. Improper setting on hook height, needle bar height and needle hook clearance. All these setting are critical that they be set correctly.
5. Electronic issues. It has been rare that the Pfaff Expressions have electronic failures. If they do they will show up immediatly. Pfaff has addressed this as well. Any top end machine that has less then 5 hours sewing will be exchanged by Pfaff through the dealer.

So in all fairness albit taking longer then it should have Pfaff has addressed issues with this series of machines.

Your point taken, however, where Pfaff or their distributors erred was not to RECALL the machine.

Instead they've left many (hundreds?) disgruntled owners, a handful of which do stand their ground but others either accept things as they are or pack the machine away or incur additional expense by trading it in for another brands or just leave it to gather dust !

It took me a year of complaining - my dealer and distributor made me look as if I was the idiot! - Fortunately, my persistence paid off. During one of many collections by the courier the machine was dropped which damaged the electronics so I am waiting for a brand new machine.

So, whilst I am glad that faults on the machine have now been acknowledged, Pfaff still deserve the bad publicity for the way they've handled the situation ! They certainly need to address their customer service as do their appointed dealers.

Great Machine
by: Anonymous

With all the complaints I decided to say something nice about the machine. I have the original machine with all the original parts and have not had one single problem with the machine.

It has worked like a charm from the day I got it to today. I have made six quilts, four out fits and dozens of items for the home.

So I am one happy customer on purchasing the Pfaff Expression Quilter 4.o I have owned mine for a year and four months now. SB

I Just Unloaded my Pfaff Expressions 4.0
by: Anonymous

I went back to my WONDERFUL dealer, Sew Faire in Tallahassee, FL, and swapped the Pfaff problem out for a Brother Duetta 4500-D. It was a little pricier, but thank God, no more problems!!!!!!!!!!!!

It sews, embroiders, quilts, and cross-stitches like a dream! The manual was written in my mother tongue, English, and is about 10X thicker than the manual for the Pfaff.

I am glad my experience with the Pfaff is finally over, and God bless my dealer.

Pfaff Expression 4.0
by: Deb Sweet

Not sure you want me to review this model (Pfaff 4.0 expression) but the good news is I love my Pfaff 1475. I bought the new 4.0 because of the large 10" bed, the auto scissors and a few other features. I would not recommend this machine to anyone! What happened to Pfaff wonderful quality?

Every single piece of fabric that I try to sew on gets swallowed by the throat plate. Then I bought a single hole throat plate and now the thread just gets knotted on the back side every time I try and start a piece. I do strictly quilting and this is so frustrating.

When I hold the top thread and the bobbin thread before starting then the top thread breaks. Now that I've explained my frustration to my dealer for the millionth time he tells me that they have come out with a new 1/4" foot to try and fix this. He says it has more covering the left side of the feed dogs.

Well I think the single hole plate would take care of that but I will give it a try when he sends it to me. I sure wish I would have demanded a 30 day trial. I bought the machine in aug. 09 and haven't hardly used it which is terrible for the price. I keep going back to my old Pfaff 1475.

Anyone have any advise email me at debsweet13670@gmail.com

Here's Some Advice re What to do with Your Pfaff 4.0
by: Anonymous

After 8 months or so of incredibly annoying frustration with this crap machine, I took it back to my dealer, who fortunately has a "trade-up" policy for the first year of ownership. Yes, it cost me more $$, but I finally got a quilting/embroidery machine that works and works and works -- it's a Brother 4500-D. Yes, I am still annoyed at my dealer for selling that crap Pfaff, but luckily they had a trade-up policy.

I love my Brother! So easy to use and understand!

Good luck...

All machines have a manufacturers guarantee of 12 months. Your machine was still under guarantee. Pfaff should have informed dealers of the thread up thread design fault and it was up to the dealer to either sort problems or refund your money !

Lesson: Never buy a machine that is new to the market
by:

I am so disappointed. I bought a Bernina 820..what a disaster that machine is. I was hoping to unload that dog and switch back to Pfaff (Love my 7570). But, it sounds like the same nasty problems and service.

Manufacturers are getting too sophisticated for the home market. They all rushed to market with these wonders of modern computerization, and unfortunately, they are working out the kinks at their customers' expense.

The 9 mm stitch width is a huge problem for quilters trying to sew a 1/4 inch seam. The opening for the feed dogs is too wide, making the feed unstable.

I think we all want the same thing: A solid stitch, a wide sewing arm and some bells and whistles like good lighting, thread cutter, good free motion capabilities.

I am tired of fighting. Just want to sew!

Big decision
by: Rosemary

I owned a Husqvana 1100 for years which I loved and had no problems with. Then I got into quilting and purchased a Pfaff Quilt Expression 2046 3 years ago (because of the IDT) and have had some problems. The thread breaks after getting wound around the spindle of the bobbin. I wind the bobbin at a moderate speed and do not overfill. When free motion quilting, it will sew happily for a time, then the thread will break repeatedly. I have a wonderful dealer and they sent the machine back to Pfaff to check the timing etc. but I still have problems.

Before I read the comments on this site, I was going to purchase a Quilt Expression 4.0. because of the extra room to accommodate a quilt. I really wonder if I should? The dealer has loaned me one for a few days to try, and I've had no problems with it. (Love the features too such as the thread cutter). When I commented to her on the problems I had read on the web about the Quilt Expression 4.0, she said Pfaff did have problems in the beginning but these have now been rectified. I live in Australia and this machine was released for sale in Europe and USA before we got it here.

I would really appreciate any further comments anyone may have.

by: Anonymous

My original machine was purchased a year ago and the replacement was only delivered last Tuesday, SO besides the demonstrator showing me how everything works, I have not used it myself but I will. I am excited with its features etc but at the same time very apprehensive, especially knowing the problems I have had.

If you read previous posts (a few of them mine) you will get to know what problems there have been.

Personally ? - I would never buy another Pfaff product simply because it wasnt easy getting someone (dealer and distributer in the UK) to listen to me and if it wasnt for my persistance and fact that the courier dropped my machine I think I would have landed up with my original machine, problems and all.

Purchasing QE4
by: Rosemary

Thanks for your comments. I think I'll wait a while before making a decision and check out other brands. The issue with me is that I only do quilting and I really wanted a dedicated quilting machine with plenty of room to manouvre the quilt. I gave up dressmaking years ago.

I'll keep an eye on this forum and perhaps you'll let us all know how you go with this new machine.

I have noticed that the QE4 is much more noisy than the QE 2076 (my curent machine) and wonder if it's lesser quality because it's made in China?

I understand how you feel. I would love a wider throat - i.e., 18" up depending on the size quilt - my husband suggested I look around for an industrial machine that has straight forward/reverse with variable speed. If you are in America there is the perfect one being advertised - I cant remember the name of the top of my head but if you care to email me at shack76 at talktalk.net I will look for you and foward details.

pfaff expression fix problems
by: swede1

There are 2 design flaws in the Pfaff expression 2.0 & 3.0 and an additional flaw in the cutter on the 4.0.
All are easily fixed! Yeah!
The first thread guide from the spool has been redesigned. I am a dealer and we replace these at no charge with the new guide. The most annoying problem is the "clear thread jam in the bobbin" message. Simply push the scissor button to activate the cutter. The machine is sensing the cutter arm not fully retracted to the left. If this happens alot then a sensor needs alignment by your dealer. Lastly is thread coming out of the take up lever. The lever has been redisigned and should be installed at no charge by your authorized dealer. The machine has been vastly upgraded in the last few months with virtually no problems. Hope this helps.

Yes my dealer has done both the repairs that you just mentioned. Although the fix on the take up lever is a temporary one because Pfaff is so backorder on this part he can't get any replacement parts. You didn't address the problem that most of the entries comment on...........the nesting problem or what I call eating the fabric. This is a feed dog problem in my dealers eyes and he doesn't know how to fix it. Pfaff convention was last week so as soon as they get back to their offices he is going to call them and see if it has been addressed. I showed him this website and he says that obviously others are having the same problem. I love my Pfaff 1475 but boy did Pfaff screw up on the quality of the 4.0 Expression.

New Purchase
by: Anonymous

I have been looking at a Pfaff 4.0 Expressions with a local dealer. I am disappointed the machines are no longer made in Germany. After reading the comments on this site, I won't purchase the new Pfaff. Even though the dealer is offering a huge trade in rebate, the bottom line is still a big investment. My much loved and reliable VIKING, (21 year old) works like a charm even after sitting for a year. The dealer told me ALL machines are now made in China. I think I will keep my Old Viking made in either Sweden or Switzerland. Whooo Hooo more money to spend on fabric. Thank you so much for all your honest comments and for saving me from a huge headache.

I loved my old Pfaff but this one is not impressing me. The thread keeps breaking when I free motion and it comes unthreaded often. Sounds really cheap when it runs. Why can't they have German engineering made in Germany!

I am really disappointed but glad I never got rid of my old one which is an unbelievable machine. If it had the wider throat I would never have bothered getting a new one. My mom bought the same machine in Australia and they are fixing the thread breaking problem.

How come we have not even been told about the problem in the States? I would like a recall and the problem fixed.

Consider Baby Lock
by: Anonymous

It is disconcerting to hear about the Pfaff expression 4.0 difficulties experienced by many of the people making comments here... I have heard of some of these issues, but don't own the Pfaff expression myself. If you are considering a different machine, I encourage you to take a look at the Baby Lock Symphony. The high end Baby Lock machines have a lot of functionality, are easy to use (more intuitive than many other brands). I own a Baby Lock Ellisimo, a Brother Innovis 4000D, a Pfaff 7570, and a Bernina QE440. The Ellisimo is my favorite (very comparable to the Symphony from a sewing perspective). It's difficult to give up on a vendor when you have loved their past products.

Two years of hating this machine...
by: Virginia

Purchased the Expressions 4.0 the first week it was out (August 2008). This is the 5th Pfaff I have owned. The IDT is the feature that keeps me coming back to Pfaff. Just before the Pfaff 4.0 I bought a Janome 6600 and I learned to love the thread cutter, knee lift, lights, large sewing space etc. It was pretty much the perfect machine except that it did not have the built in Integrated Dual Feed comparable to the Pfaffs. ( Janome does have a system but it is rather bulky and not as nice and built in as Pfaffs). I had a bucket list of every feature/option a sewing machine would have to have in order for me to purchase a new one. That ended up being the Pfaff expression 4.0. (I wasn't even looking for a new machine, but while at a quilt show I stumbled on the new Pfaff. I was sold! It had everything on my list. Unfortunately, all the aforementiond problems that people have been talking about, take up lever/ thread jumping out of take up lever, needle cutter jamming, thread jams, knots of thread under the needle plate, jam error flashing etc came with this machine. I have learned to swear using this machine. I even mentioned the problems when I took my new machine classes. They had not heard of any problem the teacher said. I guess I am just "slow"......but I was in a my local PFAFF sewing dealer a few weeks back researching machines for my daughter in law and gave them an earful of how I was so disappointed (hated the machine) and how I wished I had never purchased it because of the problems it was having. The nice clerk acknowledged that there were problems with the machines and that one could get new parts that will fix the problems (two years later). What I don't get, and what makes me angry, is that they have known about the problems from the very beginning and they did not make any attempt to contact or let owners know that there were actual , well known problems and that there was a fix for them (I hope). They have my address and telephone number, they know who has purchased what machine....no recall. Today, I took the machine in for the retro fit. Seems I will have to pay (estimated) $160.00 to get a full clean and they will put the new parts in. I think the parts are free, but I have to pay to get them put in even if I don't want the clean job? Is there something a little wrong with that? I am just hoping that with the new parts my machine will become the Pfaff of my dreams and that I can love rather then swear at! (Wished I had found this site a long time ago).

Pfaff Expression 4.0
by: Rhonda

I have used my Pfaff Expression 4.0 sewing machine only 3 times since purchasing it in March of 09. It is so temperamental, I spend more time cussing than sewing. This week I went to the store in Moscow ID where I purchase it, to inquire about machine lessons, and found out they had so many complaints, they stopped selling sewing machines all together. The nearest classes for Pfaff are supposedly 90 miles away. Reading the review above, I see I made a huge expensive mistake. I'm not crazy, my machine is a lemon. I feel violated and scammed by the company. I'll watch for a recall!

One would have thought Pfaff would have recalled the machine but hey ho, no way, dont be silly !

Sadly you've owned the machine since March 2009 so it must be out of its guarantee by now. Although Pfaff kept VERY quiet about the problems with this machine, I and others, after persistence, were able to obtain a replacement machine ! My new one works well but I have no love affair with it !

Personally, I would sell your machine, try and recover your losses and move on to something more reliable ....certainly not Pfaff !

Updated Expression 4.0
by: Anonymous

I too was leary of this machine. It sounded great on paper but the reviews were not so great. I told my dealer about this and he assured me that all the problems with this machine have been addressed and fixed. We opened the box and he pointed out the redesigned take up lever, the new thread cutter assy., and the new threader. There was another part that he could not show me without taking the machine apart but assured me that this was a fully updated machine and not to worry! I then put it through its paces in the store for over an hour before I purchased it. I have had this machine for 2 months and have been using it for roughly 6 hrs a week and it has not let me down once! No thread jams, no skipped stitches, and NO cutter jams.
I had one problem when I was using thick top stitching thread. I thought it was a tension problem. Thats when I found out how important it is to match your needle to the thread. A size 18/110 jeans needle was put in and things were back on track.
I would highly recommend this machine.

Pfaff QE 4.0
by: Julie Howell

I previously owned a Pfaff 2042 and I loved it! When the motherboard went out on it, I purchased the Pfaff QE 4.0. I have had nothing but problems with it.

They have set the feed dogs further apart on this machine, so consequently when sewing a 1/4" seam for quilting, the fabric is being fed through on only one feed dog. This makes the fabric veer to the left and you have to keep one hand on the front and one on the back to keep it going in a straight line.

I have also had problems with the thread coming out of the take-up lever, thread breaking, thread jams, wads of thread on the underside when starting to sew, messages of thread jams when there are none, needle threader comes off or breaks, thread cutter works well sometimes, sometimes not at all or cuts only one thread.

This machine doesn't like going over spots where several seams come together and you sometimes have to help the fabric through by pulling it from the back and then it takes teeny tiny little stitches. It also does the same thing when sewing the binding to the front of the quilt. I regret ever having bought this machine.

The dealer I bought it from tells me that it won the Comsumers Best Buy Award and it could not possibly be a lemon. I don't think it is a lemon, I think all of them are like this. I will be looking for a different machine.

Pfaff issues
by: Laura

I bought my Pfaff 4.0 in August of 2008. It was the first one sold from Quality Sewing in Everett, WA. I was excited to start using it, but like most have written here…I had problems with thread breakage, the thread cutter didn’t work properly, and the feed dogs had issues. As far as free motion goes – forget about it. Nothing but problems! I had it back in the shop two times the first month, then a third time 6 months later. I brought it home and it sat for almost a year, until my husband pushed me to start using it again. Two hours into a quilt, the needle broke and I got an error message that there was a ‘machine overload.’ I took the machine in for the 4th time. I recently got the machine back, and immediately started using it again. They had installed a new take up lever, a new thread cutter (and installed a shield for the thread), and a new needle threader. The machine has worked perfectly straight sewing, I have yet to try the free motion. Luckily I still have 2 years of my 4 year warrant left. Had I known then what I know now, I would have never purchased the Expression 4.0. At this point my Singer from 1958 is more dependable!

MY QE 4.0 is a DUD.
by: Anonymous

Have had big troubles with Pfaff Quilt Expression 4.0; in fact, I have used it only for 3 miserable months in 09 when I bought it, and 3 miserable weeks this year when I tried it again.

Main problem: thread keeps hopping off of the take-up lever, which is straight and has no slit
or thread hole in it. Poor engineering. Of course it would hop off. The dealer put a piece of felt on the thread spool to slow down the thread.
HUMPH. This is no solution.

another problem: over and over again I get the message THREAD JAM but I take the cover off
repeatedly and there is no thread under there.

My most expensive machine and I cannot use it.
Dealer says to bring it back and she will "give me a lesson." ??????? I'd like to give her a lesson; I have been sewing for 60 years and have
owned 10 or more machines in that time. Never had a machine that would not stay threaded.

I want my money back, Pfaff. Your name is MUDD.

Glad I'm not alone!
by: Sue

Well, after reading all the posts, it's nice to know I'm not alone with my fabric eating & free motion thread breaking frustrations. I purchased mine in Oct. '08 and didn't click to the feed dogs being off until 3 other friends tried mine and bought one. ACK!!

I just got the thread take up fixed, so now that the holidays are cleared out, I'm curious to see how it works.

Regarding the feed dogs - hello!! Quilt machine...we always use 1/4 inch seams...feed dogs should have been designed accordingly. Obviously, someone designed a "quilting" machine who has absolutely no knowledge of quilting. I didn't really think this was rocket science.

A recall would be wonderful, but I doubt it will happen. I will say that I think your dealer makes a difference through this painful process. Mine knew about the take up lever, fixed it when I took in for cleaning, didn't charge me anything and sent me on my merry way.

Other than those two flaws (that appear to be fixable) I love my machine, but approach it with a lot of chocolate on the table - lol. :)

MUST READ about Pfaff 4.0
by: Great Quilter

I am a Pfaff owner and I have a lot of knowledge about these machines. The problems I am reading about are only half truths brought about by Frustration and poor support by some dealerships. The main problem was with the first generation Pfaff 4.0's, they had a open take up lever and the thread could jump out of it if you are already having some other problems, like poor threading or bent needle causing a skipped stitch. If the thread jumps out of the take up lever then the machine would jam. This problem does not occur with normal use and that is why the problem was not caught before production on the early machines. The problem has been fixed with a new lock in take up lever and this lever can be put on the older Pfaff 4.0's to fix this problem. There is a high demand on these levers and there could be a wait to get one but a lot of dealers are putting a small piece of shrink tube on the end of the lever and this solves the problems until the new levers come in. The other problem with the false clear thread warning is a very simple sensor adjustment that can be done in minutes by any Pfaff repair center and is a very minor issue. This problem is not found on any newer Pfaff 4.0's because of a new larger sensor. Always remember nobody who loves their machines go one the internet and write comments it is always the few unhappy people. I love my Pfaff and I know they are one of the best quality machines made using only the best materials and I know my Pfaff will outlast most other machines on the market today. I will be sewing with my Pfaff 20 years from now and that is why you buy a Pfaff. Also not all Pfaff dealers are created equal and most of these problems could have been taken care of by a good capable dealer and some good education on the use of the machine. Pfaff is the best don't let anyone discourage you from looking at one, you should decide for yourself.
Pfaff has also recently changed there warranty policy and you can now take your Pfaff to a different Pfaff dealer outside your area and Pfaff will pay that dealer to fix your problem within your warranty period. Pfaff should be commended for this because other brands only have labor covered from place of purchase, that is the industry standard. I LOVE PFAFF

I just want to say I really love my Pfaff Quilt Expression 4.0. I used to sew on a Babylock and I just got tired of not having great stitches and not being able to work that well with different weights and types of thread. The Babylock was fine but you can definitely tell there is a big quality difference between Babylock and Pfaff. I would say that anyone having problems could be with the first generation Pfaff 4.0 that had a small problem with the take up lever. There is no problems anymore the machines are on the 2nd generation and Pfaff has worked hard to fix any design flaws that there might have been early on. My machine works so great and has the best features and I know because I looked at many machines before deciding on the Pfaff and I am so happy I did. I know so many happy Pfaff owners and I just wish they would all write reviews because what I have read online is not true to the machine. This machine is by far the best out there and sewing like a dream. I also know this machine is built well and will hold keeps going for many years.

The headquarters for Pfaff USA is in LaVerne TN You can find a phone number for them in the yellow paged. Try calling them directly and talking to their consumer relations department. They will more than likely be of more help to you than you have had so far. They took care of my MAJOR problem when the dealer did not.
