Sapphire 870 quilt

I purchased the Sapphire 870 sewing machine withe quilting in mind and I was assured that a cruise control would be made for this machine only to find out a 1 1/2 year later this isn't going to happen.

For I have a quilting machine and a quilting frame that has not quilted a quilt yet as a new quilter I would be more comfortable starting out with a cruise control.

Trouble with the cutter
by: Tania

I have had my Saphire 870 for just under a year. On and off I get the opportunity to pull it out and have a good sew on it. I am a crafter who loves to make quilts, I quilt them myself also.

I bought the 870 model because it had the cutter in it. I wasn't interested in getting any other model that didn't have the cutter. However, I have had endless trouble with the cutter from about 6 months, and this also for some reason throws my tension out dreadfully. I had my blades replaced 1 month ago and already they seem to be blunt and I am having the same problem with the tension again.

Considering I paid $2500 for this machine, and I traded an old Janome, I have to say I got a good 6 years out of that Janome and it wasn't by any means on its last legs, I just wanted to get a super dooper machine, however I have to say I am very disappointed so far and if this is going to be an ongoing issue, then the only way to get out of it is not to use the cutter, and as I said that is the reason why I bought it in the first place.

unhealthy Husqvarna sewing machine
by: Anonymous

I made a concious effort in trying to find the right machine for me. I thought I made the right choice, but did not. I am very disappointed as I have had my machine for 1 1/2 years and has been to the service centre twice with the same problem. Now it is a bigger problem as a metal piece inside the machine that controls the feeding of the feed dogs has fallen off. I found out that the only thing that is warranted is the hours of time that the service people put into trying to repair the problem. This metal piece has to come from China, ? how long will that take. I do not blame the retailer it is the Husqvarna company itself that has to look at their quality of workmanship that is coming out of these country's. We are paying good money to have a good quality product and not getting it. Would I buy anouther Husqvarn? NO!!! I vacumed on an on going basis to keep my machine lint free, I was told that it was full of lint and there is no way one can clean properly due to the way the machine is built. Why is that? Very frustrating and extremely unhappy as now I do not have my machine with me and have to wait and see if it can be repaired, and like I said only 1 1/2 years old. I do hope that this goes to the Husqvarna Company and try to make restitution with their customers if they care, if not then maybe it will be the next manufacturer to dissolve due to their incompentcy.

My husband also bought my machine. I had nothing but trouble with it, It has been back to the shop twice and to Sydney. It came back not much better trouble with the tension, cutters numerous errors in the computer. I took it back to the shop yesterday 2 days after its return from Sydney. I traded it for a Topaz 3 great machine not made in china. I hope I get more than 12 months out of this one. Three cheers for the service I got from Launceston

Sapphire 870
by: Martha

I bought a Sapphire 870 (as opposed to the 850)for the cutter and the automatic tension and have had problems from the start. I sew in spurts (sew lots for a few weeks, then none for a few months etc) so originally just thought the problem was with me not being familiar enough with this machine. Very frustrating to rethread again and again when the tension would go crazy, thread would break, thread would jam and ball up under the threadplate. After rethreading the top thread 5+ times and redoing the bottom thread 3-4 times, it would sew fine for a while. The mfg has since admitted that there was a problem and that they had a "fix" for it. The dealer recently added an internal part to my machine (at no charge) to stop the tension problems BUT I am still having tension problems after the fix. The cutter worked fine at first, but has already needed a new blade. Also had problems with winding of bobbins. Some bobbins would wind totally uneven so were useless. Some bobbins would wind evenly, but machine would stop when bobbin was only 1/2 or 3/4 full. Dealer thinks this is related to positioning of thread and perhaps of the thread itself. I have used Mettler silk finish thread for 15+ years on my old Viking #1 and never had a problem. Dealer has said to sew on it a little longer and if still unhappy will work something out for a different machine.

FM sewing is problematic because thread shreads and breaks frequently! Don't have a spring action foot...looks like another expensive "parts" investment. I enjoy regular sewing with it, tho. Thanks for all your stories.
