Sears Kenmore Model 1318

by Marie
(Gaithersburg, Maryland)

I bought the Sears Kenmore Model 1318 sewing machine when I was 18 years old in 1968. It is over 40 years old and still going strong!!

I love my machine; it is the one thing I have always kept because I can sew anything. I have made all my own clothes and my son's when he was little. I have made quilts, tents, awnings. You name it, I've probably made it.

The only thing I have ever done is oil my machine and I believe that I have had it adjusted by a repair man 2x in all the years I've had it. Do I sew much? I always have some project going.

I definitely recommend buying a Kenmore sewing machine. oh yes, this machine features straight stitches, zig-zag, stretch stitching and a buttonhole attachment. I wouldn't trade it for any newer fancy model, because it sews perfectly!

best dependable machine
by: Anonymous

I also have a Kenmore sewing maching that is almost 45 years old and it is the most dependable sewing machine ever. I would recommend a Kenmore to anyone interested in buying a sewing machine. I have never had a problem with it either.

Zig Zag feature
by: DivaVen

I now have the Kenmore model 1318 sewing machine in my possession, yay! It does sew beautifully, so smooth and different than my newer Brother model. I even have the manual for this machine. However, I cannot get it to zig zag! How do you use the zig zag feature?

zig zag mode
by: Anonymous

You are right, the Kenmore 1318 sewing machine sews so smoothly. I think I will enjoy using this machine over the use of my Brother machine. However, I cannot get it to zig zag mode. I have the manual and have set the stitch width and set the stitch length control on 10 and the special stitch dial to the right setting; yet it only sews in a straight line - what gives? Granted, I am fairly new into sewing. I have completed a few projects, but I have really only used my machine for repairs and such. Help!

Selling the machine
by: Anonymous

I also have a Kenmore 1318 and have been given a new machine by my children, so with much regret I am thinking of selling my old friend. Is there a market for 45 year old machines.

market for older machines
by: Anonymous

There most certainly IS a market for older machines, especially for well-made Kenmores. Try second-hand websites like Kijiji or Craigslist. I just bought my Kenmore 1318 off of Kijiji for $40. It certainly could've been priced for $75, or $100 because the table and manual were also included. It works like a dream, and is much sturdier than my mother's machine, which is probably 25 years old. The metal Kenmore is so sturdy and relatively quiet. I just had to buy bobbins and I was set!

Kenmore 1318
by: Sharon

I have had the Kenmore 1318 for over 40 years and have had no problems with it. Very smooth sewing. Today it will not do the zigzag or the knit stitch. Have oiled it and wondering what the problem might be. Any suggestions?
