Singer 132 Featherweight

by Jane
(Ogden, Utah)

I bought the Singer 132 Featherweight sewing machine on sale a few years ago and it was adequate for occasional use for mending, etc.

Then I used it to sew a Xmas tree skirt, two thicknesses and it suddenly quit and I couldn't figure out what happened.

Repair man said it wasn't worth fixing as a gear foot was broken and would cost more to fix than machine cost.

I had used an old Singer portable for years so I bought Singer again. Looks like the newer models are not as good as the old ones were.

Singer Featherweight, c. 1942
by: Marquita

I started learning to sew on my mother's Singer Featherweight when I was nine years old. That was 53 years ago. The only part ever replaced was the foot control. This machine is indeed a "feather weight." And it has one stitch with varying lengths.

For us, the machine has been heaven on earth. Since we never do fancy stitches or care about embroidery, the single stitch is nice. Nothing else has been repaired. Just our own simple maintenance. The materials we use are those for clothing. So, we've never been naive enough to ask it to do heavier work, since it is not made for that. However, we've made crafts, curtains, drapes, etc. as well.

I'd give my eye teeth to find another one for my daughter. Alas, to find one in this condition with all parts is probably out of the question. She'll inherit it in the end.
