SINGER 2108

by 2nd Hand Rose
(Spokane WA)

I have used the SINGER 2108 sewing machine heavily for nearly 25 years and am just now having a problem with the feed dogs... too expensive to fix. I paid $100. for it new.

The only bad thing I can say about the SINGER 2108 is that the cover plate on top/side is hard to get off and back on. I have loved the small arm for sleeves etc... don't even know where the regular arm is, I don't use it.

But now I am finally looking to buy another (used, cheap) well reviewed machine and if I come across the SINGER 2108, I will buy it. The newer cheap Singers do not get the even reviews so I won't go that route.

Good used Machines
by: Alice McFarland

You might ck out the Viking 6000 series. They were made 70's-80's about every 5 yrs they came out with an update. The 6360 only has 3 cams & the the 6440 i think has 6 & the 6460 & 6570 has 8. you can even use the * cam (H) in the Machine that only came with 3. there a work hoarse even my 6440 I believe i bought it in 76 is still going. The feet are interchangeable also so even my #1+ use them. believe me it sure saved on buying the extra feet. The 6570 is really a nice machine. I bought it on e-bay a few Mo. ago.(under: viking sewing machines e-bay)If you haven't bought machines on e-bay before make sure they say runs good not just beautiful machine. When i got that one It didn't run, i could have disputed the sale & gotten 80%back I understand but i should have e-mailed him & ask if it ran good. I decided to deal with it as it came with ever accessory there was so I took it apart &found what was wrong & showed my husband & he told me how to fix it. It only cost me time. a lot of it, as i had never done that before. They are a great machine The only problem & find consistent is , If they set for yrs unused they tend to freeze up & the service on them is about $100.00 but is worth it. I know as I bought one @ a swap meet for $20.00 you can tell if the wheel is stiff Or the 3 nobs on the front wont freely turn. Hope you receive lots of info on your quest. best wishes.

Here's another thought

Another great pick would be either the 830 or 930 Bernin
I have a 830 and just love it- it's easy to maintain- has been a real workhorse.
Try and find a well cared for used machine- it's easy to pick up extra feet- depending on what type of sewing you do.
These machines were built to last and they do. They are easy to work on and parts and readily available if needed. I have an area service man- who works on all types of machines and this is his favorite. A tune up usually runs abou $45. Well worth looking around for one.
Aside from Babylock, and I don't have any first hand knowledge with that one, but do know of a person happy with a newer generation, I would suggest that you try and stay away from the newer, computerized, plastic junk that are way over priced, and in the end will bring you nothing but frustration- no matter who makes it today.
Good Luck and happy sewing!
