Singer 5825

by janet
(atlanta, GA)

I've been sewing for 45 years, and I've always had Singers. My most recent (before the unfortunate Singer 5825 sewing machine) was one of the first electric models Singer made. It did everything I needed and was COMPLETELY reliable.

Until, in the middle of a massive slipcovering project, its poor little heart just gave out (it must have been around 80 years old at the time). I still have it; I simply cannot bring myself to give it a decent burial.

So I rushed out and bought the Singer 5825 - which worked well for perhaps 2 years. Then everything went to hell. I had it repaired (in the middle of yet another massive slipcover project) yesterday, going some distance to find a shop, and when I got home its ghastly tension and bobbin problems were fixed! For 40 minutes!

I have never liked or trusted the plastic bobbins and feet (which can take FOREVER to get to click into position and often refuse to stay there) but this new problem seems to be unfixable.

I am SO off Singers. Now searching for a Brother or Bernina--older model ones.

Bernina 200e/2004
by: Anonymous

Please DON"T even think about getting a Bernina. I know I seem to be one person with a grip with Bernina but I have to warn you about their customer service. It sucks. They DO NOT STAND behind any of their products. I have seen many demos after I bought my "Witch" and I really wish I had purchased a Brother. As you can tell I'm little down on this so called family owned Bernina Company. If I had not purchase and invested so much time and money in this machine I would get another, probably a Brother???? Just thought I would put my 2 cent worth in for you. You can read about all my problems with at the Bernina section of this Blog.

Choosing a nes general sewing machine.
by: Jeanne-M Turner

Cannot recommend the Janome enough. I bought for both my daughters a Janome around £300 to £400 which have done them well for the past 8 or 9 years but the pied de resistance for me has been the Memory Craft 6500. I hammer it to death but it never fails to perform. I would love the newer version but as this continues to go, Alas, I cannot justify the expense.

Surprised by Baby Lock
by: Anonymous

Well folks, I finally bought my new (new to me) sewing machine and I couldn't be happier. I found a really good deal on a Baby Lock Ellegante Embroidery machine. I took the plunge and bought a machine that has blown me away with all of the features, quality, and ease of use, it almost sews/quilts/embroiders by itself. This is my first experience with a Baby Lock product and I am really empressed with how well designed it is and how it can do more than I ever expected or imagined. So far, everything that I have tried to sew, quilt, or embroider on it has turned out exceptionally well. I have sewn for years on all sorts of machines, but this is the best by far. If you made me come up with a negative feature about this machine, I would reluctantly have to say that it is probably the weight of it. So I don't take it to class very often, but that is not a big deal I take my 20 year old Janome instead. Like I said I am impressed with my Ellegante, it is an awesome machine.
