Singer Advance 7422

by Michelle Fosheim
(Sundance, Wyoming, USA)

I purchased the Singer Advance 7422 sewing machine about 9 months ago. I noticed after only sewing a few dresses (of light cotton fabric) that it was beginning to 'drop stitches'.

I read the book, over and over and over to find out what I was doing wrong. I couldn't find anything that I was doing which would cause this.

I sewed a polar fleece lining for my husband's sleeping bag this past elk season and it wouldn't pick up the bobbin thread!!! I was preplexed!!! I had run over a pin and broken a needle, but I didn't think that should affect the way the Singer 7422 machine preformed.

I sew a moderate amount of items, nothing too heavy or complex, mainly show shirts for my kids for their Rodeo Queen competitions or shows. I hadn't sewn more than about a dozen items with this machine, all of light fabric, until I sewed the polar fleece.

I took it to the shop and was told it would cost over $100.00 to have it fixed! I was told that the timing was off and that this is an extremely common problem for this machine.

What am I to do? I paid $200.00 for this machine, and bought the Singer name thinking that it would last me at least 5 years. The repair shop also told me that this was only one of the 4 or 5 'common' problems with this machine.

I emailed Singer to find out if they'd refund my money as this is a manufacturer error and was told that either I threaded it wrong or that I'd broken a needle!!! I did NOT thread it wrong, and breaking a needle on a machine is an ordinary and common occurrence, that's why they're sold in packages with multiple needles, not just one needle!!! I'm so offended!!!

I've been sewing for over 30 years!!! I found out that Singer sold it's name to a foreign company some years back, and their moto is make it cheap and disposable and don't stand behind it.

My grandmother's Singer is still going strong and is over 60 years old now. That's why I bought singer.

Ladies, if you are buying based on a name, research that name and buy from a company who will stand behind their product. I definitely DO NOT RECOMMEND SINGER BRAND!!!!

Perplexed
by: Anonymous Also

I also bought a Singer because of the name, however, I paid $350 for a commercial grade model. After only a few months and lightweight sewing the motor would strain and whine. I have to crank the wheel as I accelerate the needle to help it get through the material. I do home decor sewing so the fabrics are usually heavyweight. This machine is just pathetic. Now I am having trouble finding parts and accessories for it since the last owner of the Singer name has gone out of business. Gee, I wonder why? I was told it wasn't worth reparing, its also out of warranty, but it does have trade in value since they need it for parts. Go figure!

OUTRAGED, SINGERS GONE TO THE DOGS !
by: SEWING MOUSE

I WAS ANXIOUS TO START SEWING ON A PROJECT I HAD BEEN DELAYING, SINCE I HAVE ARTHRITUS AND IT IS SUCH A TASK TO DIG OUT MY MACHINE AND THINGS TO SEW NOT TO MENTION GETTING MATERIAL NOW THAT WAL-MART HAS ALMOST QUIT HAVING IT. I REALIZE LIKE YOU THE LAST FEW TIMES I HAD USED THE MACHINE ( PURCHASED 10/08) THAT THE SEWING WASNT RIGHT. I WAS FABERGASTED. AS I WAS MAKING CURTAINS AND COUSHINS FOR MY LIVING ROOM AND CHRISTMAS STOCKINGS THAT THE FANCY STITCHES WERENT LOOKING SO FANCY...... BUT, AS I GOT IT OUT THIS TIME AND YES...( DUH !) CHANGED A BLUNT NEEDLE THAT THERE WERE THREADS IN THE BOBBIN CASING. AS I OPENED IT THE BOBBIN CASING FLEW OUT. THEN AS YOU STATED IT. IT WOULD NOT SEW AGIAN. NOT PICKING UP THE BOBBIN AT ALL. WHICH HAS LED ME TO HERE. I CALLED THE COMPANY AND THEY SAID IT WAS OUT OF TIME.
SINGER HAS GONE TO THE DOGS ! COMPANY'S THAT SELL OUT NEED TO COMPROMISE A CHANGE IN THE NAME IF THEY ARE CHANGING THE PRODUCT..... SINGER AKA: SINGING THE BLUES!

Sad about Singer Advance 7422
by: Anonymous

I thought I got a deal but to my dismay, more of a headache! First time opening it and tryinig to use to make burp cloth, it would NOT pick up the bobbin. I followed the instruction to the T. I even had my husband (Mr.READ THE DIRECTION FANATIC) check it out. It wouldn't move. What to do? Go figure when I finally decide to replace my 17 year old machine (still functioning fine) with the latest...but sad not the greatest.. it would be the modern one that doesn't work. Boo on Singer for making such a sad, not so "Advance" machine!

Singer Woes
by: Anonymous

I lost the manual to my new Singer model 7422 in a basement flood. I contacted Singer and they told me that I would have to actually pay $15.00 to get a new one.

In all my years on the internet I have never encountered a company that has the gall to charge their customers for a replacement manual. I don't need a hard copy, a simple pdf would do, but no, they won't provide me with one unless I pay. To hell with them.

after 25 years with my Singer I finally had to make the decision to replace it. As it lasted so long of course I went with Singer.

The 7422model is a WRECK. After sewing 4 items the timing is now off because I broke a needle. Do you know how many needles I've broken in the past 25 years. To make a machine that needs repair after that is CRAZY. Now it's spend the $100 to repair or just dump it and go by another.

Should have kept repairing the old one folks.

DO NOT BUY SINGER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Unbeliveable! I wish I had found this site before purchasing. I sewed 3 0r 4 small things, then, yes, I had the same problem. I only changed the thread in mine & it wouldn't pick up the bobbin. Called the company, since it is still under warranty. They said it probably jumped time, but I would have to pay shipping to send it to them. My brother just happens to be a repairmen, so he fixed it for me & had it sewing. Guess what? The very next time I started a project & changed thread, it jumped time again. I think this model is a total reject!!!

Oh my God!! What a shame!!
by: Anonymous

I purchased this machine two weeks ago. Guess what? After sewing three light fabrics, the fabric started tangle with the bobbin thread and stuck the inside of the machine. I had to rip my clothes several times because of this problem. One week later, the needle was bent and broken in the middle of the sewing. And now, the thread is cut every two or three inches of the sewing. I've bought 5 sets of needles, two complete sets of threads, cause I've been thinking it might be my mistake. What am I supposed to do? Should I pay the shipping fee? I'm so frustrated and upset.

Piece of junk
by: Karen Sanders

I purchased my Singer from Wal Mart--what a piece of junk--I have been sewing for more than 30 years and I have never before experienced such frustration while trying to work with a machine--Initially the first 2 I purchased were actually broken and in pieces in the box--I took those back, and finally have one which was not broken--but what a piece of crap!!

I have went back to using my old Kenmore--sounds awful and lights flicker, but guess what it stitches.
I wish I had found this sight also!

Me TOO
by: Anonymous

I started sewing a little over a year ago. I actually bought a Brother at Walmart and had trouble immediately with a bad power cord; so I took it back and opted for the Singer because of the "fine reputation". I make aprons for a small store in my town, and have had trouble the last few weeks with this bobbin wadding up and drop stitches. My machine is 15 months old. The local machine shop wants 87 dollars to service it which won't include anything they find wrong with it. In July, when my machine was only a year old, I took an applique class only to discover that the applique stitch didn't work on my machine. I'm sick.

CLUNK, CLUNK, CLUNKER
by: Anonymous

After 35 years, and hundreds of hours on my old Singer, I had to replace it. I opted for the Singer Advance 7422. First, the needle threader broke, I hate the location of the presser foot lever, the light is useless, and now, after only using it about 20 times, it is making a horrible noise when I try to refill the bobbin. It clunks, the needle continues to move, it freezes up and all the lights light up. I have to shut it off, turn it back on, etc., about 20-30 times to refill the bobbin. I'm just waiting for it to break altogether. I have hated this machine from day 1, but did not have lots of spare $$ to spend. Hope to replace it after Christmas. Any recommendations ?

Don't get a Singer!
by: Anonymous

I am extremely upset as well with Singer. Singer used to mean you were getting a quality machine; not so now. I got my new machine, used it once to make a throw blanket and the bobbin wouldn't thread. I brought it to the repair shop, paid the $100.00 and thought everything was fine. I used it once after paying for the repairs and guess what, the same problem occurred.
Contacted the manufacturing company and got the same runaround that everyone else has.
What a shame that such a prestigious name such as Singer has joined the ranks of all the rest of today's crap products.

Model 7422 freezing up
by: Anonymous

I bought the Singer Advance a little over a year ago and have sewn very little on it. Tonight, 1/2 way through sewing basic simple curtains for my soon to be born grandson's nursery it just froze up. I can't turn the wheel and it's "clanking." Is this the timing? Think I'm gonna find some little old grandma's metal sewing machine (like I had and gave away!!!) IN A CASE for $100 somewhere and throw this piece of junk away. I don't need all the gadgets, just the basics.

I was so excited to get this machine as a gift a year ago, didn't use it right away. Began using it last Summer, now I can only straight stitch and even the thread jams, breaks, bunches, pulls, and oft times tears the fabric. Of course the 1 year warranty is expired, so I am open to suggestions. Bought the machine at WalMart - will they take it back? I have been sewing for over 40 years and never had this problem.

I have been sewing for many years, I thread it correctly and fill the bobbin correctly. I started a new quilt this a.m. and am now going up the road to finish it on my mom's antique. Guess I'll have to dig out my grandmother's old White and use that again. What to buy next????

Recourse?
by: Michelle

Hello everyone!

If you read through the posts, you will not only see that Singer offers NO RECOURSE, they actually sent a very threatening email to me. If you have problems, the only recourse is to have the machine fixed, take it back to the store you got it from (if it's not too late) or throw it away. Singer does NOT stand behind the 'one year warranty' in any way. My hope is that folks will read this blog before they buy and opt for something else. I still love the old Singer machines, pre 1980's, but after that they're junk. I now have a Bernina and love it.

Singer be warned...
by: Anonymous

You best advertisment is word of mouth...I was about to buy this sewing machine (new but second hand for $150.00) rather than pay full price for the Kenmore I was looking at...I looked up the reviews to see if this is a good buy and well honestly, any company that would warn a consumer with legal action for warning others of how badly they were treated from a faulty product, is definitely not a company that I want to be involved with. I tend to believe the original poster because of all the subsequent posts that are having the same problem and the same lack of customer service. You get new customers and retain your old customers but having good customer service. I see that I should look elsewhere and I will and if anyone I know asks my recomendation I will refer them to this reveiw and let them make their decisions based on what is there but soooo many unhappy customer!!!

PS... Go figure the word that I have to type in below to post this is "STRIFE"...is that an omen or what??

Made in china CRAP
by: Anonymous

i am an occasional crafter now, most of my sewing is done by hand, but there are things i like to run out on the machine...so i have had my "Singer" for about a year, I have sewed on it a total of about nine hours...pulled it back out of the closet last week to start a new project, after the first yard or two of stitches, yes, the bobbin thread dropped, skipping stitches and snapping the thread...it will no longer make a nice, even row...no matter what settings...this is yet another example of shoddy, cheap products we are subjected to since work is now farmed out to other countries. I would strongly recommend that if you are considering a purchase of a new sewing machine, Singer should NOT be on your list of possible choices unles you want to throw away 200. bucks and suffer endless frustration. Being in the middle of a project and having your machine die is the equivalent of going on a road trip and having your new car break down and leave you stranded on a road with no cell phone and a back seat full of hungry kids. C'mon Singer, if you are going to call it a Singer, at least make it stay in tune long enough to finish one song!!!

Singer from Walmart
by: Chris Pyle

I too bought a Singer from Walmart and shortly it was a wreck looking for a place to happen. Dang it went right back. Did not even finish the first project I was trying to do on light weight fabric. Walmart did take it right back as it was within the 90 day return and I had my sales tag.

Then I thought to buy a Brother and the reviews are not good on them either. I need some zig zag for the sewing I would like to do. Guess I am going to scout out a Kenmore too. I had one for 30 years and when I gave it away it still worked. That was years ago and have been using an old 301 Singer that works great too. But I need zig zag and it is only a straight stitch.

Also that new Singer I bought smelled awful. The book smelled musty and the box had to go outside instantly is smelled so bad.

85$ for timing
by: drew rolland

Bought singer 7422 at walmart 2009 . Light farm clothes repair use for 6 months . Hit an eyelet, broke needle, timing off . 85$ asked for timing ... I inquired if it could happen again, answer : yes .

The 7422 isn't a good machine . Singer, wich by the way is very difficult to contact, replied " what do you expect when you pay 170$ " .

Agreed I would be a "moron" to have the thing fixed; and yes these posts are very useful to regular folks like us . Try to reach Singer just for fun ... In Canada you have to go through a dealer that will tell you "how wrong you were to buy that model" and "you should get the Curvy" . Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me .

home remedy
by: drew rolland

Update on problem 7422 ...

We were going nowhere with this . Decided to open the thing and retime it "homeway" . Guess what !!! It is a joke, it is very easy to do, when you have a farmer husband . We began with the assumption that " the needle stopped on something hard and the barrel went on its merry way " in our case a quarter of a turn . The top thread couldn't grab the bottom one anymore . Just stalled the barrel in the foot(be gentle cause it's not commercial grade stuff) and with your hand rotate the exterior knob to get needle to go its course . Voilà ! It worked for us ... and can be repeated if needed . We were precise with the trials, it took two ... checking where we started with the needle in relation with the barrel and then we found the right spot ... The needle needs to meet at its lowest point the opening of the barrel (that would be so easy with a picture) . It is in no way scientific, but hey, it worked .

Costly
by: Anonymous

Why do you think that the Singer company went to making their machines in China?
Why do you think there are more expensive machines made not only by Singer, but also other manufacturers?
Yes, you do get what you pay for. However, "new" isn't always better!
Next time, go to a reputable sewing machine dealer and try out the machines yourself. The dealer has to make you a happy customer or he will not stay in business. You have to buy from the local dealer or they will not be there to help you when you need them.
Low price plastic machines are just that "low priced". Save a little longer so you may enjoy your craft!

Very Disappointed
by: christcl

I bought my singer 7422 less than a year ago, and have yet to complete one project on it. The bobbin keeps messing up and not able to pick up thread. It has done this 4 times and each time I follow the instructions to the letter and get it to work, this time I was sewing a outfit for vacation and the machine quit working, right in the middle of the outfit. I have 3 other outfits cut and waiting, looks like I will be leaving for vacation without new outfits. Very disapointed in SINGER. I have had other Singer machines and they were great. The 7422 was a BIG disappointment to me. Never will I buy SINGER again.

I have this same model sewing machine. It worked for a few months and then began messing up randomly in the middle of projects. It ruined so many things! I took it to a reputable repair shop and he wouldn't even charge me to fix it. He said it was such poor quality I would be better off just buying a new machine.

The problem had nothing to do with the machine being threaded incorrectly, by the way. Everything on it was adjusted properly and the repairman even tested it out in front of me and had the same issues.

sewing the stars and stripes of freedom
by: Jody

learn to hand stitch, when obama is through with this country, none of us will have electricity. In Arizona we used to have sewing machines, then illegal immigrants started stealing anything from our homes they could sell or trade for drugs, so no matter what kind of sewing machine i bought, the neighbors who are illegal immigrants would wait till i went to work and break into my house and take my sewing machine. They also stole my bed linens, dishes and other household appliances that were small enough for them to carry away without a truck or car. This went on for over three months, finally i could take it no longer, I have now moved away, out of Arizona..it was my home and the home of my grandparents, now it is Mexican territory again and there is no use to report anyhting stolen, the police hands are tied. You may wonder why i posted this here in a sewing forum, i will tell you, unless each of us be more aware, this country will fall into socialists government, we will have no choice, and sewing machine use will be a thing of the past , unless you have a treadle machine, or hand stitch. You do not see the cancer eating away below the surface if you have not lived in a state like Arizona, along the border. There is no morals, no laws that the illegals go by other than they do what they want, it is a culture different in every way, that is why mexico is in the shape it is in, and we are soon to follow.

I bought a used Singer Advance. It was less than a year old, based on the seller's receipt.

I learned to sew on the machine, and for about 3 weeks it worked wonderfully! All of a sudden, it just stopped picking up thread. I didn't break a needle, and don't remember doing anything that would cause the machine to go bad on the timing.

Repair estimate was $100. I chose to buy a 20 year old Singer that works fine, for $15.

I'm not going so far as to say that Singer is purely at fault on this. I was a beginner. But, still, it sure did seem like it was wimpy compared to the the 20 year old machine, which is working just fine after several months.

Singer 7422 is a lemon

My sewing Singer 7422 machine wouldn't pick up the bobbin thread, and I sent it off to be repaired. After a very little sewing, it did the same thing again. Surely there is something we can do about this.

Love My Singer 7422
by: Chelle Thomas

I have had my Singer Advance 7422 for about 3 years and have NEVER had any problems with it. I use it all the time to make jean skirts, curtains, quilts, mending, etc. I have broken a few needles on it. I change them and continue. This last time I changed the needle (last night) I was tired and in a hurry. When I started to sew the bobbin thread was not picking up at all. Frustrated I left it til this morning. When I went in to try again I noticed I had the needle in backwards. Make sure when changing your needle that the flat side is to the back and the rounded sided is facing forward. If it isn't then it will not pick up the bobbin thread at all.

Singer Advance
by: Kay

I wish I would have checked here before I bought my Singer Advance. The problem I have is the tension. I took it apart today and cleaned it out good. put it back together and still same problem. The tension on the bobbin side is too loose and just lays along the underneath. This will not hold a seam very long. I am very disgusted with it.Like everyone else here I trusted the Singer name but no longer! I will check out the comments on the next machine before I buy it. Anyone want to buy a cheep sewing machine? At least I know not to have it worked on as it won't help and I would just be out more money.

I Love My Singer 7422
by: Chelle Thomas

Mine is about 3 yrs old. It was bought at Wal-mart as a gift. I absolutely LOVE it!!! I sew on it all the time. I make jean skirts, blankets, quilts, shirts, mending, etc. I have broke a few needles and have never had any problems ... until last night. The needle broke, I was tired, irritated, and frustrated. I replaced the needle and then it would not pick up the bobbin thread. I was too frustrated with it so I left it and came back to it this morning. This morning I realized I had the needle in backwards. The flat part of the needle needs to be facing the back and the round part in the front. If not it will not pick up the bobbin thread. Some of you posting here may want to check to see if your needle is in right.

Two solid days...
by: Katie

Hi,

I've had this machine for over a year and had not had very many issues with it until yesterday. Yesterday morning while I was in the middle of a project it seemed like anything that could possibly go wrong with a sewing machine did! After two solid days of tinkering I have finally fixed it, at least temporarily.
the belt had fallen off the gears and the bobbin shuttle was not moving at all, I unscrewed the bottom and fixed this then it would NOT pick up the bobbin thread at all, when i finally managed to fix that, the timing was off so I followed an earlier post about fixing this at home and it helped so much! Thank you!

Its my first sewing machine, so I couldn't just go back to using an older one, and I cant afford to buy a new one, either.

Although its too late for me, I wouldn't recommend anyone buy this machine.

I am so glad I read this page! I was seriously considering purchasing this machine until I read these comments. A friend of mine has one and loves it (she sews a LOT) and has had no problems so far, so I thought it would be a great investment. I have now totally changed my mind. Thank you all for posting here to help others who may make a purchasing mistake. I'm sure some people have this machine and it works great, but the negative comments far outweigh the positives. Thanks again, and I will be looking to another brand!

same problems - now fixed - so far, so good
by: Anonymous

I also have had problems with the timing on my advance. After only a few projects, the machine started dropping stitches, and only the straight stitch worked correctly. Even though I was a little over the one year warrenty singer extended my warranty (I bought it at walmart, but it was a gift, so I did not have a receipt). the lady from customer service was lovely, and helped me trouble shoot before sending it back to a service center. I sent it to the service center, and they were also very helpful. They fixed the timing, it worked for a short time, then went again. Because this was only a short time later, they again took it back and reimbursed my the shipping fee. It now works great, and it is a great machine - although I went through a lot of frustration with it. So basically I've had the same problem as all of you, but have been lucky with customer service. I have also found that I need to have EXACTLY the right type of bobbin and needles or it will not work. Here's to hoping it continues to work well and I'm not left 1/2 way through the kids halloween costumes.

Another Off Timing...
by: Anonymous

I received mine as a Christmas gift. Mine has crapped out, too, after 15 months with it. The timing is off, too expensive to fix for the overall cost of the machine. I'm going to be saving up for a Husqvarna Viking sewing machine like my mama had/has. So disappointed.

by: Kallie B

I purchased this sewing machine to hem pants and sew small items. After hemming just 5 pairs of cotton pants, it will not pick up the bobbin thread. The timing is off after just 5 pairs of thin pants!!! I've had this for 4 months and it's absolute garbage. I would not recommend that anyone purchases one. I paid $179.99 for it. I will never buy another Singer. I'm utterly disappointed in this product.

Singer 7422
by: Linda

This was given to me as a gift--everytime I attempt to use it, something goes wrong. Today the bobbin thread got tangled in the machine-all the lights flashing--had to cut it out and ruined the material--always seem to have trouble.
I finished my sewing today on my Singer that I purchased in 1963 - that was when the name meant something. The machine looks nice, too bad it won't sew! I have had it too long to return.

Have had this machine over a year and have only used a couple of times. Wanted to make Christmas gifts. Was sewing. Went to iron my piece and came back to no light, no power. Changed plugs, extension cords. Checked the electric switches. Still no power. What now? Can't afford a fix or a new machine.

As a Singer user since the "treadle" era, I was astonished when I bought this machine for $199.00. I had trouble from the first time I "tried" to use it. It took hours to get all the parts to work properly. I sewed some curtains, and some table cloth's, then WOOPS, nothing works, bobbin, the light burned out, I NEVER intend to use this machine again, it's not worth the "frustration. So, IN MY OPINION SINGER SEWING MACHINES ARE A PIECE OF CRAP! DON'T BUY!

Singer Advance 7422
by: Anonymous

I purchased this Singer sewing machine for my wife JUST over a year ago. She had used it aprox. 10 times. Now, of course, not only the timing is way off, but it doesn't pick up the bobbin thread. Just like everyone else in this thread, we all have had similar issues. After speaking with a sewing machine repair man (at his shop), he suggested buying a White brand or similar American made machine. He told me that the repair most likely will not be perminate due to the Chinese manufacturer for Singer. There is no real fix for these machines, and the cost for repair isn't worth it. I am throwing mine in the trash and spending a lot more for a quality machine. You really do get what you pay for these days.

Do NOT purchase this machine. You will be sorry!

No "Made in the USA" sewing machines left!
by: Dwayne Britton

White Sewing Machine Company was a sewing machine company founded in 1858 in Templeton, Massachusetts by Thomas H. White and based in Cleveland, Ohio since 1866. Founded as the White Manufacturing Company it took the White Sewing Machine Company name when it was incorporated in 1876.

The company took the name White Consolidated Industries in 1964. It was acquired by Electrolux in 1986.[1]

In 2006 Electrolux sold off a number of its lines under the Husqvarna (including variations of the Husqvarna) brand name. The White line of sewing machines was consolidated into the lower end Husqvarna Viking brand after this sale-off. White-Westinghouse brand remains a brand of Electrolux and is the only remanence of the "White Sewing Machine Company" name, however White-Westinghouse brand line contains no sewing machines.

New "White" branded sewing machines models have not been manufactured since the Husqvarna spin off in 2006. Husqvarna Viking, Singer, and Pfaff brands are now all owned by SVP_Worldwide. Though not advertised, SVP provides all of their user manuals for all of their brands including the "White" brand through the Singer brand website.

Sad to say, there are no "Made in the USA" sewing machines left!

Unhappy with 7422
by: kathy in dallas

I bought my 7422 2 years ago. My 35 year old Kenmore after years of evening gowns, curtains, furniture covers, and other more unusual projects(sand box covers etc)it finally gave up. I bought the Singer because that is what I wanted when I bought the Kenmore but couldn't afford one.Shortly after I bought it I began having trouble with the stitching. If I had gone on line then I would have returned it immediately but I didn't and just kept on threading and untreading following the instructions explicity (I have been sewing for 60 years-I know how to use a machine). Shortly after Christmas 2010 the machine wouldn't do anything except straight stitch. I emailed Singer and got no responds then called customer service today and was told that since it was out of warranty they could not do anything except file it as complaint.

very dissatisfied with this machine
by: Anonymous

I've been sewing for 15 years, for a small profit, and although I've never been able to afford a really expensive machine, I've had quite a few different models of inexpensive old machines and new cheaper (less than $400) ones that work beautifully. Usually I can figure out how to fix them when something goes wrong. I am the person my girlfriends call to help with thier sewing machines, I can figure out the problem 99.9% of the time.

Honestly, I have never seen a bigger peice of junk than the 7422. Problems since day 1. Unfortunately for me, I lost my reciept for this machine and was unable to return it. Total waste of money.

For someone to say $170 is a cheap machine and you get what you pay for, is a horrible statement. I started out on an old singer from the 60's that lasted many years, and my second machine was cheap, plastic $30 mini machine that lasted for about 200 hours of use before it clunked out (sewed it to DEATH!LOL!) and then I bought a brother for around $100. I had that machine for 8 years or so before buying the 7422, which didnt even last five hours before needing a major fix. Then broke again, and again, and again.....

This machine is very finicky. With all my fix-it powers, I've spent more time fixing it than sewing. I ended up giving the machine away yesterday because I felt guilty selling someone else my problem. Again, total waste of money. My current machines are a brother se400 (for about 3 months) and a brother ce5000 (for about 2 years) and they work fantastically. Mark my words- I will NEVER buy a singer again. NEVER.

Mixed Feelings
by: Becky

I have had my 7422 for at least 5 years. I also purchased it at WalMart. So far, I have not experienced any undue difficulty with the machine. However, I would like to point out that it was purchased to replace a significantly more expensive Singer that I was at my wit's end with - repeated timing issues and an ongoing resistance to proper tension setting (I could NEVER get nice, tight, even stitches!).

I thought I did the right thing the first time by paying more for a 'better' machine. After that plan blew up, I bought a cheap one thinking I could toss it if it gave me any grief. After reading through these posts, I now know not to sweat it if it starts acting up - I'll just pitch it and buy something else. My sympathy to all of you out there - it's really frustrating to have a machine that fights you every step of the way. Since my machine seems to be older than most of yours, maybe that's why mine is still behaving...for now.

by: Anonymous

I have this machine, was bought at walmart three years ago and has never given me a problem, i sew on it every day..i make about 20 quilt tops s a month, and have quilted a few of them on this same machine...i also have made a lot of slip covers with heavier fabric and cording. the only issue i have with this machine is that the feed dogs do not drop and the plastic feed dog cover that came with the machine pops out occasionly, resolved with masking tape...i have found that some standard singer attachments fit this macine, the darning foot works well for machine quilting free motion. If the bobbin case is blown free of lint on a regular basis you may get better results or performance from this machine....the more you sew with cotton threads the more lint accumulates, also be sure and use the same thread in the bobbin as you are sewing with..mismatched threads can cause tension to misbehave. i have enjoyed this Singer, if i could afford a more expensive machine i would buy a janome, a new one for quilting free style.

Dropped Stitches and then NO stitches at all!
by: Extremely Disappointed

A while ago I puchased the Singer Advance7422 model. I grew up watching my mother and Aunties sew... They all swore by Singer at the time. I haven't even finished my first project and now it won't even stitch at all? It picks up the bobbin thread but when I attempt to sew it doesn't pick up any stitches?? I haven't broken any needles, and I am only using light cotton materials the heaviest material is supposed to be a quilted insert. I am EXTREMELY disappointed with my purchase.. I had had hopes of completing my daughters birthday present prior to her B-day... (Grrr)

Our 7422 is JUNK!!!
by: Husband

I bought my wife a 7422 thinking I was really doing a good thing by getting her a "Good Ol Singer". Right out of the box it was difficult to get it to work. She rarely uses it and I certainly can understand why. It has her frustrated only after a few minutes. I know when I see her go in to use it, that it will only be a short time before she is mad at it. Since I am a very handy guy with tools, when she has had enough, she calls me. She has called me EVERY TIME SHE HAS USED IT.
I'm working on it today and I needed to know something that was not in the manual so I went to the Singer web site to see if I could get a peak at a parts diagram. Saw they wanted 15 dollars for a manual and laughed to my wife about how cheap Singer is. EVERYONE has manuals on line!!!
In closing I'd like to say to Singer, (who, I read above, threaten they have a very no nonsense leagal department, and can see why they NEED ONE!!! Too bad for all of us they don't have as good a quality or engineering department as well) after reading what peices of junk your brand has become, and the fact that you know it and you don't care or will stand behind it, I'm going to take my wife's 7422 and give it to the trash man. I'll buy her a new machine from another manufacturer. I'LL PAY EXTRA FOR ONE MADE IN AMERICA! NO to China!!!!!
I think I will also post about it on my Facebook page because everyone should know just how bad Singer has gotton.
Thanks for having this blog. If I had not seen what trouble everyone has had from their machines, not to mention from Singer, I would probably have kept trying to coax that 7422 along. Any suggestions on a good machine?

First of all, I came to this site trying to find a manual...mine has been lost in moving. I am fairly new to sewing and didn't want to purchase a large machine, just wanted to try my hand at a few small projects. I'm disappointed about having to pay for a manual, which I won't do. But the reason I post is Miss Cheap Skate, you are out of line!! Not everyone is a professional that will or can pay $800 for a sewing machine! I don't care if it is a $5.00 sewing machine, it should work properly! You need to get off your high horse before someone knocks you off it!!!! I've never met a rude seamstress until now. Happy sewing to everyone else.

I was surprised to see complaints about this machine. I have had my Singer Advance 7422 for a few years. I sew a lot. I make costumes for a local high school and a college drama program. I also sew for my family and friends. So a variety of materials have been through my machine. No problems. I do take the time to maintain my machine and keep it clean. I bought my singer 7422 a yr ago...it worked fine at first and now as seen in the other comments, the bobbin won't thread. All the lights flash and it is more of a chore to fill the bobbin that sew anything.I too had a kenmore and switched to singer due to the "reputation" that stood behind the name. Hugely disgusted as to how much this brand has gone down hill over the years. Why is it that everything that you buy now has replaced quality with quantity and has lost all regard for customer satifaction. Singers use to last decades now they last days. Won't buy another one.

Bobbin - Jumping Timing...AGAIN NEW
by: LeAnn

I bought my Singer Advance about 3 years ago. I haven't used it much. I made a quilt for my daughter and curtains for her room, and later made her a summer dress. That's about it.
I took the machine out to make another summer dress for her a year later, and the bobbin wouldn't catch. I took it in for repair and paid $90 for the work. I never even finished the dress, so I really haven't used it since. We just moved to a new home and I went yesterday and spent $70 on fabric for curtains and pillows for the living room. Took out the machine and....YOU CAN GUESS IT...the bobbin is messing up again. It's jumping around all over the place in the holder and
the thread is knotting up in clumps. I can't figure out for the life of me what is wrong. I'm disappointed and very disgusted. I, too, bought for the Singer name. It's a shame.
I've got almost $300 into this machine now and I can't even use it.

the thread is knotting up in clumps. I can't figure out for the life of me what is wrong. I'm disappointed and very disgusted. I, too, bought for the Singer name. It's a shame.
I've got almost $300 into this machine now and I can't even use it.

It's a shame.

bless your heart NEW

you posted the same comment three times, so i am guessing you are a bit lost when it comes to modern technology. maybe you should just sew by hand with needle and thread? less complicated than that electronic sewing machine, eh? as for haivng 300 dollars into the machine, that is not much compared to what a real sewing machine costs. try buying one that cost more than a few bucks and you might have a quality machine.
