Viking 6570 sewing machine

by Cassidy
(California)

I grew up using the Viking 6570 machine. I learned to sew on it at age three and am now 21.

My mother has had it for years before that. The machine was given to me by my mother a few years ago when she purchased an embroidery machine.

The Viking 6570 sewing machine has never broken and I have never needed to replace a needle. It has jammed perhaps twice in the years I have been using it. I love this machine.

hi cassidy, never had to replace a needle. i find that hard as needles don't last that long, they go blunt. try using new needles as this will enhance your work, and help your machine. i replace my needles regularly and use different ones for different cottons and fabrics as one size does not fit all. regards helena south wales uk.

anyone wanna earn their angel wings today?
by: cynthia

hi 6570 owners! this is an awesome machine for those of us still willing to thread our own needles, and cut our own thread LOL! i have had my machine for over 20 years and it has never let me down!.... unfortunately, my manual (which i will admit i still need to refer to from time to time) was glued shut by a toddler who thought it would be fun to squeeze her blue juicebox like a tube of paint onto the "pretty" pages.... i know there are businesses offering .pdf reproductions for a cost, but i am hoping to rely on the kindness of a stranger for this.... if you think you can help, please email cyntwinmom@netzero.net.... thank you for reading.... --cynthia :)

The above are the best that Viking has. I have been VERY disappointed in my 960 serger. It rusted out in 6 months. It sat in the same room with the older machines. Viking has not helped with repair on this one. Buyer Beware!

I love my machine
by: Libby

I absolutely love my Viking 6570. I have had it for 30 years this year. I had it fixed by someone who fixes Vikings and I went to use it 8 months later (I was sick with breast cancer) and found it only sews on the right side of the plate. It's like you are on zigzag and it is only on the far right side. The guy went out of business and now I can't use my machine. I tried sewing on the machine but it is very difficult. It always runs into the plate and brakes the needles.

I was told by the new owners that if they could find parts it would cost over $350 to fix, I don't have that kind of money.

I purchased a used 6570 a couple of years ago and love it. I have heard that there are 3 additional cams I-J-K? Does any one have them. Does any one know how many cams were made? Just curious and would love to have them. Also and orginal manual. I have the download but it is in black and white.

Highly recommend Viking 6570
by: Danna

I bought my Viking 6570 around 30 years ago. (Beautiful red) I took sewing lessons to learn the potential of the machine and proceeded to use it for 5 children, our household, gifts, repairs, quilting, and anything else needed.

I literally wore it out just this year. The selectronic board died. I can say I used this machine wherever I traveled, so it traveled easily. Yes it is heavy but mostly indestructible due to the heavy durable material it was made from. The stretch stitches along with all the pattern choices made sewing a breeze.

The color coded dials made it versatile in picking stitches, button holes, patterns or any other stitching required. The various feet were quickly and easily changed. Threading was easy even for my children who learned on it. The needle up switch kept the needle in the position you desired (up or down)without loosing your stitch. The built in handle assured you that the case cover would stay on the machine when your transferred it to a new location instead of the risk that the latches might come unclasped like some carrying cases.

I confidently sewed on Viking 6570 sewing machine with little need of repair until it finally died. I miss it. If you can find one, I highly recommend this machine. I think the only problem I had with this machine was that the thread on the thread uptake lever sometimes (just often enough and unexpectedly) would slip off and jam the machine. It was easily identified and corrected after a few occurrences, but it still would be annoying to have it unexpectedly jam the machine.

The Husqvarna 6570 operates like charm
by: Alice

I inherited the Husqvarna 6570 from my mother. I give it the highest recommendation. It was purchased for her by my father in the early 70's.

Mother was a talented amateur seamtress and made most of my clothes as I was growing up. Later, she sewed for the grandchildren. She also made curtains, drapes, decorative items of all kinds, etc.

I'm not into sewing like my mother, but three years ago, I had the machine serviced, and at almost 40 years of age, it operates like a charm. While it's not exactly portable due to it's weight, I have carried it to my beach cottage on multiple occasions with no difficulty.

I'm glad the heavy materials used in it make it so reliable. What other well-used machine would last this long?

The Viking 6570 is a workhorse
by: Janet

I bought my Viking 6570 new and it is a wonderful machine. It will sew through anything and seems to almost jam proof. It requires some manual adjusting to find the right cam and to regulate the stitch length etc., but it works great.

I passed it on to my daughter-in-law, but gave her instructions to give it back if she no longer wants it. It is a work horse, but likely should be used regularly to keep things working smoothly.

Help, need manual!
by: Susan

I just purchased at a yard sale a Viking 650 and am so excited about using it. It did not come with a manual, so if any of you can advise me of where I can download one for free, I would so very much appreciate it. The reviews I have read on this page have given me quite a boost in eagerness to learn this machine and get busy! Thank you so very much.

Viking 6570 SLE
by: Anonymous

I've owned the Viking 6570 SLE sewing machine for almost 35 years. I still have the original receipt from 1977. I worked an entire summer to buy this machine and it has always served me well. It's traveled the world with me and, like a champ, done whatever jobs I've asked of it.

Not being computerized is an advantage in places where electricity spikes and fries computer models. It has all those lovely cams, and except for 5 thread serging, it has more than enough stitch patterns to finish a project. I love this machine so much that I just bought a second one very inexpensively to have as a back-up.

I'm on the hunt for a third machine now in order to have spare parts. I imagine this machine will last me until I go to sewer's heaven. Even then, it just might go with me. I think this is one of the most reliable and best sewing machines ever built for the home/light professional sewer. It was made to last. It has lasted well.

I have been living in Huskvarna for ten years during my childhood and in school we had to learn to sew on Husqvarna 2000. Some years later I bought my darling Viking 6570 and now it has been my partner since 30 years. I love this machine! Service now and then is however to recommend if you want it to be your partner as long as mine have been.

Is my Viking SLE 6570 really dead!!??
by: Karen

I bought my Viking SLE 6570 in 1982 and I have sewed for 2 children and 2 grandchildren on it. It has been my only sewing machine and I love it dearly. Recently, it would only sew backwards and it's in the repair shop now (a Viking distributor). However, the repair shop tells me that it has "seized up" and even though they unfreeze it, when they go to operate it again, it seizes up. They say that they have taken it apart and put it back together 3 times. They say there are no broken parts, but they can't get it to work. They tell me that there's no hope--the 25-year warranty has run out and the Viking company can't offer any help since there are no longer any parts, service, etc. available from the company. They say that they have a machine just like it in their shop that has gone dead and they can use this for parts, if they need parts. But, they don't think a broken part is the problem. They are going to try to get it to work one more time, but if they can't fix it then, they are going to declare it dead. I can't believe this -- there must be SOME WAY to get it working again. How could this be??? Does ANYONE have any suggestions, any advice, any solution??

Machine sewing backwards
by: Bonnie

I wonder if the repair people have set the pattern knob... the one that selects the stitch, to the white dot. If it is on the white dot, all it will do is sew backwards. That is the setting to sew backwards on a steady basis. They very well may not know that.

Viking Husqvarna 6570
by: Bonnie

I bought my Viking Husqvarna 6570 about 35 years ago. It has been a wonderful sewing machine for me and, it will never leave my hands. I have a newer machine now, but, when I have something heavy to sew, or my newer machine is in the shop, the 6570 is right there, ready to pick up where it left off. I have not had it in the shop more than 15 times in all those years.

When I tell machine mechanics that I will never get rid of it, they understand and agree with me. It is a very good work horse type of machine. It has many of the newer stitches, such as the three step zigzag, and the three step stretch stitch, where the machine stitches two stitches forward, then one backwards, and many fancy stitches too, beings I have all the cams for it.

It even has "needle up" and "needle down". I still have the original manuals for it too. This machine is no heavier than any other good quality machine. I also like that this machine is made with metal gears, not plastic, like so many of the newer machines are. By the way, I think my newest machine weighs more than this one does.

The reason I am using a newer machine is that I wanted a longer basting stitch, and a wider zigzag than the 6570 has to offer.

Viking 6570 older model
by: Geri

I purchased the Viking 6570 in 1980 brand new. I was not an inexperienced sewer and I had used a Singer or White sewing machine for years. I was shopping at the mall and saw an impressive Viking demo.

I decided to start sewing on the Viking after I heard and saw the sales pitch at the mall that the machine could do just about anything and it had a life time warranty and if I ever wanted to get a newer model I could swap my machine for a newer one and use what I had paid for the machine which was over $800.00 and pay the difference for the newer machine.

Since the machine never had a good stitch I had it in the repair shop many times, but then recently it couldn't be fixed and I was told that Viking wouldn't be able to trade in my old machine for a newer model. The company had mislead me for the sale, and now I am left with a non working or non-usable machine.

I will never buy another Viking because the company is nothing but a master of manipulating the sale by mistruths. I now tell everybody about my bad experience with Viking. They don't back up their misinformation after the sale. Now I purchased a Singer which is much better and not as expensive.

Help??
by: Anonymous

I have a Viking SLE 6570 and absolutely love it, but it just stopped working.
The bobbin threader will spin but the needle will not go up and down..I think the bobbin threader is continually in 'thread' mode..if that makes any sense.
I think I can fix it myself, but need to quickly because I have a sewing deadline Monday..
Does anyone know how to take this machine apart? I unscrewed the 2 screws on the back, but the back still won't come off...Where are the other screws? I don't want to unscrew the motor or anything. :)

If anyone could help me, I would be eternally grateful.

Viking #6570 Selectronic Sewing Machine.
by: Beverly Daebelliehn

I purchased my Viking #6570 Selectronic Sewing Machine in December of 1979. When I first purchased my machine I had some difficulties with the thread breaking and timing on my machine.

After taking it back to the dealership from which it was purchased; in Rock Springs, Wyoming I was never able to pleasantly sew on this machine without one difficulty. I took it back to the dealer who didn't seem to know what to do, so sent it into Salt Lake City to a certified dealer. After working on it, it performed better for a short period of time and finally had to return it for another repair.

I can't tell you how many times I have had to have this machine repaired. So much so that I would never purchase another Viking machine. Each time it was always a certified dealer. They have replaced just about every part of the bobin casing, bobin, feed dog, needle plate, stitch programmer, feed dog, foot control & parts I honestly can't remember. Today the needle is offset to the needle hole and you can't even sew a seam straight without it wavering about and coming out crooked, yet the repair tec always returns it as working perfectly.... Mind you I have been sewing since I was a teenager and am now 71 years young.

I have purchased more needles than I can remember because it breaks needles & thread every time I try to even mend on it, and every adjustment was ALWAYS made by certified tec FOR VIKING SEWING MACHINE.

I honestly believe the serious problems developed after the original dealer serviced it the first time.

I have notified the Viking company and never received any satisfaction nor would the dealership I purchased it from replace it...

End of story! a very dis-satisfied customer that does not believe the warranty VIKING offers is worth the paper it was written on.

Sincerely disapointed....
Bev
I love sewing but that love has diminished after this experience.

Viking 6570
by: Lin

I bought a demonstration model of Viking 6570 at half price, AUS$1,000.00, for my 21st birthday, in 1981. I loved that machine.

I originally bought it for the:
1. Universal tension
2. Three step zig zag
3. Free arm and table
4. All moving parts, ie, no need to oil.

I used the machine during a full time 4 year fashion course I was doing, and then used it all the time for everything. I sewed Lingerie to Leather.

I used it so much that I forfeited the annual check ups, because i couldn't be without it for a week, but never had a problem till it was 23 yrs old, when the dial wouldn't turn and had to have repaired, it broke again about 2 yrs later, and the repairman said that because it was made of cast metal, it was passed it's used by date and it was a waste of money getting fixed. I was led to believe it is the age of the metal and not the work I've put it through that caused it to break.

That means that these machines, even in 'as new' condition, will also break as the cast metal components only have a limited life. I would buy a second hand pre-loved in 'as new' condition, except that I would have the same problem.

I have looked at other machines and even bought a Pfaff creative 7560, but loved my Husqvana more, give me a mechanical machine any day.

So is that true, the cast metal has limited life, are all cast metal?

wanted sle6570 Viking machine

I am looking for a sle6570 Viking sewing machine. I have two granddaughters and would like to give them each a sle6570 machine. I have mine that I've had since shortly after their father was born (he'll be 40 in Oct.). If anyone has a sle6570 machine that they will part with, I would be very interested. Please e-mail me at katyh@frontiernet.net. Looking forward to hearing from you! I, too, have wonderful memories making things for my friends and family with my Viking. Second hand value
by: Adam

Hi all. I am new to the world of sewing and currently looking at purchasing a 6570 to learn on. A friend of the family is selling one complete with all accesories, cams etc and manual. It's in great condition and working correctly, as far as i know.
I really like the machine and i'm very keen to buy it, i'd rather have a decent old machine than a cheap new one, and it seems the 6570 is certainly a work horse according to everyone's comments on here.
The people selling are aware it was a good machine back in the day, costing several hundred pounds, but arent' sure how much it's worth now and have asked me to make them an offer. Can anyone help me, i have seen one on Ebay for about £180 but it didn't sell so i still don't know how much it's worth. Any thoughts will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Buying a vintage 6570
by: Margot

If the machine has not been serviced for its age by an experienced vintage Viking service repair person, you need to figure in the cost of that to the total cost of the machine. Replacing the cam shaft and getting rid of dried gunk should cost about up to $350 American dollars.

Signs there are problems are stitching backwards, not stitching all decorative stitches, or the stitch dial being "mushy" instead of sharp clicks when changing stitches.
