Viking Emerald 183

by Lori K
(Chicago)

Preface: I have only been sewing for the past 8 mos.

I just bought an Emerald 183 (picked it up last night!), and I had what I hope are just beginners problems with my new machine: when I was piecing for a flannel quilt, the fabric was hard to direct (it wanted to move sideways, constantly).

So I changed the height of the teeth. This helped a little. But I also was a bit disappointed with how the machine ran.

I have an old Classica 105 that seems to run more smoothly. Should I have expected this?

I hope this is just a figment of my imagination. Any feedback from Emerald 183 users would be wonderful.

Emerald 183 - DOA
by: Anonymous

When my room mate, set up his new 183, it would not start. He bought a C20 about 10 months earlier and nothing but problems with it. Well it went back in for repairs and brought out the 183, only to find it completely dead, non operable. So the 183 went back and they gave some cock and bull story about it was out of alignment and needed to be adjusted, and was bumped in shipping, but no evidence of this on the box. ad to say, but the cheap machines from both Viking and Pfaff made in China are total JUNK and it is a waste of money no matter how little you paid. They look great, but do not work. Do not expect much from these machines, they will be in need of constant repair.

Emerald 183

I have had nothing but trouble with model. I am on in a way my 3rd machine. The first one would not want to go when pressing the foot controller. It would stop and start and sew at it's own will and also had a humming sound when on. I was told it had a bad board . I went to get the replacement and when I got there they had had it out of the box and gave me a apiece of fabric to sew on when I pressed to foot control it would not even sew the feed dogs had been dropped and the store manager could not get them up. She then went and got me another new one to take. It was only on long enough for me to sew a straight stitch and it looked fine. I brought it home and after being on a few minutes it also has a constant hum and the top thread will pull straight out no matter where the tension is adjusted at. WHAT A PIECE OF JUNK FOR THE LARGE PRICE!

No foot pedal for my Viking Emerald 183
by: Kate

Had to drive at least 60 miles to purchase my 'Viking Emerald 183" I was so excited ...until I took it out of the box,,,,no foot pedal. Now I have to wait until tomorrow to call and pray they don;t take forever to send me one. I,m feeling overwhelmed about all of this now, after reading these reviews.

Run away, run away!
by: Disappointed Jane

After an agonizing three years with my new Singer, I decided to buy a new machine. I selected the Emerald 183. I drove home anticipating practicing before I settled down to start my Christmas sewing in earnest. I sat down and read the manual first. Then I took everything else out of the box. Everything except, that is, the foot pedal. It wasn't there. Then I checked the contents of the accessories bag. A bobbin was missing and the buttonhole foot was missing also. When the vendor I purchased it from got nowhere with Husqvarna, I decided they wouldn't be very responsive to me. My husband came home from work to find me chewing on my fingernails and yelling, and he promptly put the thing in the car and returned it.

I had bought a viva husqvarna only to trade it in because it had the motor replace because the foot pedal did not work or something. decided to trade to the emerald 183 big mistake my foot pedal only works when the machine decide to make it go,I broke the needle on this machine and one would think you take broken needle out and replace, no it does not work you have to take bobbin casing out incase there is some cotton stuck inside, put it back rethread whole machine still no work i did this for about ten times, (short of getting a sledge hammer to fix it myself) have taken it back and waiting for reply.I will be buying a janome in future no problems with machine ever.DO NOT BUY HUSQVARNA

poor quality for Viking
by: Anonymous

This machine is a low standard machine for Viking. Im surprised they have not discontinued it. For the price you could go to Walmart and buy a brother machine for the same money and get more for the money..........Viking makes some wonderful machines but like with anything...
YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR!!!

buy the cheaper top of the line and you will be happier..nothing under the Saphire 155 is woth the money..........trust me I have 10 HV machines and I have never had any problems!!!
2-Diamonds, 3-Limited Edition SE's, 2-Designer 1, 1-Quilt designer, a Huskylock s25,and a number 1+...........the best of the bunch is the SE's...........that to me is a wonderful machine......I have never had even one problem with any of my machines.......
