Viking Husqvarna Platinum 730

by Kathy
(Indiana)

I can't believe a company makes a home machine that won't sew simple cotton gingham. In our New Owners Orientation Classes at JoAnn, the distributor gave us a fabric for each topic demonstrated.

There was denim, felt, wool, but the broadcloth was 2 thicknesses plus interfacing (to show a buttonhole in a shirt). Of course my Viking Husqvarna Platinum 730 machine did it.

But when I tried to sew simple cottons at home, I turned it into a science experiment varying pressure, tension, needles, and feet using the straight stitch. When I looked over my class samples, I realized that the interfacing was for heavyweight.

In the Accessory User's Guide under the section "Stabilizers": "Use stabilizer when sewing ... to prevent puckering of the fabric and ensure smooth, beautiful stitching." Wow, it works.

I've never in my 52 years of life on 4 machines had to use paper underlay to sew simple fabric. Who wants to cut strips of paper to sew every XX seam I'm ever going to sew !!!!

OK, I vented. Thanks.

Oh, yes, to be fair: The first project out of the box was to hem jeans. Beautiful and so nice over the thickness of the side seams. Likewise, a bedskirt out of upholstery fabric and a similar bedspread.

At least the Viking Husqvarna Platinum 730 machine is functional. Dec 2007 - Aug 2010.

But now I would like to do routine sewing.

I heard a local quilt artist say she has 3 machines: Viking, White, and a serger - all needed to produce her quilts. So I conclude I need a machine that sews normal fabrics (without the use of stabilizer) -- probably one that is advertised as the cheapest beginner model !

sapphire 870 quilt
by:

When I purchased my 870 Viking quilt machine a couple of years ago, it was because I had a Viking serger that I was satisfied with.

Not true with this quilt machine. First of all, I am 2 hours away from the store I purchased it from and I have in over 2 years been unable to get them to schedule an "owners lesson" - so I've been on my own.

The threader has never worked - even though they supposedly fixed that the first week I had the machine.

But it sews in fits and spurts. Just yesterday, I was working on a quilt...no batting -- a rag quilt with 3 layers of cotton. It started off beautifully. Then for no reason, the tension stops working right....knotting and snarling underneath. Nothing has changed; I just paused to mate a couple of pieces of fabric together. I changed the needle, rewound a new bobbin, blew out the dust (but there really wasn't any, turned it off and let it sit for a while (? was it running hot ? - surely not!) After several more attempts, it starts working again.

This is a common occurrence for this machine. What a disappointment. Oh for my Kenmore that I used to have long ago. I've been sewing for over 40 years on all brands of machines. I've never seen a machine as finicky - for absolutely no reason - as this one is. I would NEVER NEVER have another Viking sewing machine.

BTW - I wound up replacing/using the original needle, bobbin, etc with subsequent "spastic" moments yesterday...they worked fine - so there was nothing wrong with them originally. STUPID machine!

Bougth one from JoAnn dealer (caution:totally separate thing from JoAnn and J won't help you against them).
Ladies there totally sided with Viking "exceptional quality and motor force, etc."(or commissions?) won't even let me try a Singer (those are always returned, don't compare, etc.) I bought a basic non electronic Viking.
Days after I ended up trading for the basic electronic model after the motor of the first one ended up making a noise at start("you are not pressing foot strong enough" they said)Didn't like the second one as the machine stops at every nuance of the pedal, the threader is not precise, letters are small and ugly, too expensive for what it offers ($600).
Decided to return it as I only had it for 5 days and after I finally tried a Singer Futura at same dealer(it sew through 4 layers of denim and was smoother to manage, when I told lady dealer "it does sew well, she replied " they won't sell a machine that doesn't sew"). But at dealer the lady told me I couldn't get a full refund because it was a trade in and the first one I bought 14 days ago. I called Viking customer sevice 800# and a lady tells me I can return it, I 'll have to stay put with dealer or call her back from store. Go back to dealer and as lady refused the return I call C service and another lady answers with totally different demeanor, defensive and totally uncourteous saying that they cannot intervene with dealers decision...etc,etc,etc. I said I WILL RETURN IT or I'll go to chamber of commerce, lady dealer decided to do the full return and not only to "downgrade me to original model purchased".

Message for Viking: I felt I was dealing with a safe and reputable company when the first CService lady told me I could do a return no problem, I felt I would buy a higher end machine from same brand if Singer wouldn't really compare.
Second lady screwed your image big time. Sorry not many people will tell you guys this, defend your company IMAGE AND SERVICE and be more polite and nice with your customers I felt I was in the limbo only resourcing to dealer "mercy" or a big ugly complaint.
I DO NOT TRUST YOU!! AND ALL THESE ARE MY OPINIONS.
