Viking Husqvarna - The Rose

by Granny M
(Indiana)

I am so unhappy. When my Rose feels well, she's wonderful, but when she's not - I'm miserable. Rose came to live with me as a retirement gift to myself.

I was so excited about having a new hobby after sewing since high school days in home ec classes. Unfortunately, Rose seems to be a lemon? She's been in the shop more than she's been in my workroom.

The store where I purchased my Rose has only one repairman who works on a part-time basis. Therefore, when a machine goes in for tune-up, check, or repair, it may be there for months.

All that money spent on a machine that sits somewhere else most of the year - it's disgusting. Last year I was so upset I wrote to Husqvarna and a very nice gentleman wrote me back. My husband packed up Rose so carefully and we shipped her to the factory in Ohio.

Well, here it is again, the tension just seems to go beserk and there's no taming it. Talk about nests of thread under my work - they are big squirrel nests. I have checked with the shop where I bought Rose and they are still saying it will be at least a month or more until she will be back.

Does anyone else have such an experience? I read all the accounts of people who love the Rose. I do too, when she's feeling well and have made some lovely things, but it's so frustrating to want to use Rose and have her incapacitated.

Does anyone know if this is typical? Is my Rosie some sort of a recalicrant old girl who just didn't get the right start in life?

Thanks for listening.

Your Rose should meet my lemon!!
by: Tobi's Mom

I have had the exact same problem that you have had over and over and over again. To make matters worse this is my second Viking Husqvarna. I took my first one back to the store where my dear husband purchased it for Christmas for me.

Fortunately, I had my daughter with me, she was a communication major in college. She told me not to say a thing and I followed her advise. After about 1 hour of the owner of the store trying to prove that I had done something to the machine to cause the trouble. She proceed to have the same problem.

My daughter chimed in and asked her what she was going to do about the obviously flawed machine. Stating that her father was taken advantaged of, since he knew nothing about sewing machines. After my daughter's very logical arguments. The owner gave me a new sewing machine.

I was delighted beyond belief. When I got home and started to use the machine it worked perfectly. At last a sewing machine that worked. My delight did not last long. The owner of the store replaced my Viking with another Viking. After using it several times. The same thing started to happen. The design of the Viking sewing machine is wrong. The bobbin does not work properly. That is it!! Needless, to say I am now looking for another machine. The Viking has bobbed it last bobbin for me. Any sewing machine would be better than a Viking.

I have read this same complaints on several web sites. Everyone can't be wrong. Does anyone have any suggestions regarding a new reliable sewing machine.

Sincerely,

Tobi's Mom

Viking Rose
by: La D

Dear Granny M and Tobi's Mom:

I own both the Viking Lily 550 and the Rose, and I have owned these machines for more than nine years. The Lily and the Rose are my work horse machines, and I have never encountered the problems you describe.

I am responding because I have helped others with their machines. Please don't take my questions/suggestions as insulting--they are not meant to be. I know that lemons exist. I had a Pfaff 7570, and I know it was a lemon. The following are my questions:

1. Is your thread old?

2. Has the bobbin case area been cleaned? I
clean mine often. A lot of lint gathers
while sewing. My girlfriend had a problem
with her Kenmore. Once I cleaned out the
bobbin area, she had no more problems.

Viking Rose
by: Chris

I had wanted an embroidery/sewing machine for a long time, so when I found a used Viking Rose, I jumped on it. I have no idea when it was purchased new, but I have had it for 5 years and have put an average of10 hours per week on it.

A year after I bought it, the computer malfunctioned and had to be replaced. Other than that repair, nothing has been done. It works perfectly and sews all fabrics with no problems. I can change from chiffon to leather, with a quick change of needles, and continue all the sewing I need to do.

The embroidery function is incredible! I am having so much fun with that. I do not like the fact that the embroidery field is 4"x4" because some of my patterns are larger. That is my only complaint. This machine is the ultimate for the multi-tasker!

I can be cooking dinner and embroider a project at the same time. I just get the Viking Rose machine set up, put in the fabric, thread the machine, and press a button. There is a beep when it is time to change the thread! That is all there is to it. Ultimately, this is the best machine I have ever used, and I have been sewing for 50 years.

Love my Rose
by: Barbara

I have had my Rose for nearly 10 years now and have just upgraded to a Topaz 30. I loved the Rose as it was reliable and did wonderful embroidery and general sewing.

I had an initial problem with the feed dogs sticking down - that turned out to be a minor problem which was easily and quickly repaired under warranty and I have had no problems since.

I was warned by the people I bought the Rose from that it is very important to load the bobbin correctly in Husqvarna machines. The most important part is pulling the thread through the tension slot until you hear a click. If I failed to do this step then I would have tension problems and bird's nests underneath.

I am now going to have my old Rose serviced and I will sell it but I am sorry to see it go as it has been a great machine (unlike the Brother it replaced).

Husqvarna Rose
by: Judith

I bought the Hasqvarna Rose thinking I was getting a quality product. I do not sew everyday or even every week. The Rose went through 2 motherboards and was needing a third.

I could understand if I was a professional sewer, but really, 3 motherboards? Something was very wrong with this machine and Husqvarna refused to help in any way.

Let the buyer beware!

don't buy a viking
by: Anonymous

I have had my rose for 12 years and I never have been that happy with it. had to take it back to the store to have it worked on right after I bought it because it was out of time. Got it back and then the pressure was never right on the feeder and I had to drop the needle down a little bit farther to make it stitch. I have sewed with this machine for all these years in this condition. I was told it had a lifetime warranty but The place where I bought it from is no longer in business and the dealer told me to fill out the warranty and bring it back to him and he would send it off .Unfortunately I did and now this place is no longer in business and I just bet my warranty was never made good. Now this crazy machine has got a new problem and sometimes it will not stop sewing when I take my foot off the presser foot. the only way i can stop it is to cut the switch off. This was my first viking machine and I would not but another one.

Won't buy Viking again
by: Anonymous

My new machine will not be a Viking. I'm giving the Rose a "4" because I've had good service from it for eleven years. However, something happened to the owner's manual shortly after I got it and I literally tried for YEARS to get another copy, either from Husq or from a dealer. No one was any help at all! (Finally found one online.)

Now it has decided it is out of thread. Stitches 4 stitches, beeps and stops. The nearest dealer who can service it is 40 miles away and since July I have spent more time on the road than I have sewing. After their fourth effort turns out to be a total failure, I am throwing in the towel and buying another machine - not a Viking.

Smelly Rose
by: Judith Rosenlund

After putting in 2 mother boards I gave up. I spent a lot of money for a real stinker of a sewing machine. The store where I dropped it to be fixed left town and took my machine with them, or left it in the trash.

Before purchasing the The Rose I was using a 50 year old Viking. It worked fine. I wanted more sewing options si I bought the Rose.

Viking Husquarna should send all of us a coupon for a huge discount on a newly designed machine.

Perfect
by: Pat Ware

I have had two huszvarna sewing machinges and wouldn't buy any thing else. They have been a perfect machine for me. I sew and do a lot of
embroidery work and have never had either one in
the shop. I am sure you are using the wrong thread or haven't taken any of the classes to help you operate the machine right. When I took
the class it helped me a lot, I have been sewing
for years and each machine is alittle different so don't think you do not need to take a class.

Viking software support is terrible!!!
by: Anonymous

I have two machines one is a Pfaff that never lets me down, My Rose is another story entirely. I have had nothing but trouble with the software, Viking no longer supports the software so now that everything is Windows 7 the software I spent $2000 is useless as is the whole embroidery unit. I had trouble when I first had the machine and after several calls to customer service gave up and bought a new computer(an XP) the software was not compatable despite being marketed as such- After another week on the phone with "customer service" I gave up and returned the software and went to Staples to ask about another compatablilty issue I was haveing - He explained how to fix it in 5 minutes. I retrieved my software and it worked! I was equyally disgusted that the needed patch was on the PFAFF website (same company, same software) when I pointed this out to Viking the patch appeared on their website within 48 hours. Of course none of this addresses the fact that if my rose gets over heated working she become schizophrenic and resets her 0 point (my partner says it is due to poor shielding he's an engineer). Not fun when your project is ruined!
I have a Pfaff and a Viking- customer support is night and day as are the products. Love my Pfaff, Hate my Viking.
I have now moved and my local Viking dealer does not even know how to work the machine so no lessons for me...
